How many more examples are there of this?
I don't know if these things still work in the States - do you even get sellotape in the States? Maybe thats a seperate question.
Anyway, how many more of these are there where a brand has total monopoly of a name? Yes its Monday morning.

Did you know, if you allow a trade mark to become a generic term for, say, a biro, you loose the trademark protection?

The consequence being there are trade mark lawyers who have to spend all day writing letters like "Dear sir, I notice that in "Temporary Constructions Weekly" you refer to a generic modular building system as a "portacabin". Please note that "Portacabin" is in fact a trade mark of our client Sadbastard Ltd, and the correct term is modular building system. Yours Sincerely"

In our exams in school we were forbidden to use terms like Word, Excel, Access etc. If you used them they were treated as gibberish. You had to say Word Processor Application, Spreadsheet Application, Program that looks like a database but is actually a series of flat files with crazy algorithms etc.

Biro is a good one.
