View Full Version : Help! MTW:VI keeps crashing
Hi i used to play MTW alot and recently decided to reinstall it. The Problem is that everytime its loads up the strategy map at the beginning of the game its crashes out. Ive reinstalled it several times with and without VI. Ive even formatted my computer, not installed SP2 on windows XP, tired the exe in different compatibility modes. The only way i have managed to get it to load is by starting a campaign on the VI map with the irish on easy (the only relivance this has is that its the campaing you get if you dont change any of the options just click continue), doesnt work on any other difficulty settings either.
I know this game used to work on my computer and ive been racking my brains to see what is different now, maybe graphics card drivers? (i got an geforce FX5200). Please help this game is so much fun.
I had the same problem. Used to crash whenever I loaded an existing game or started a new game. Basically, I was restricted to the menu screens.
It stopped happening when I decided to upgrade my graphics drivers, so that's probably your problem as well. Now, all I get are the random monthly crashes that I used to get before :D. However, I've learned to deal with those.
Well im using the latest drivers for my graphics card i guess i could try and find some old drivers see if that makes a difference...
I have to use an old graphics driver, the new ones don't work with MTW. Look in the apothecary for the numbers of ones that will work.

If you have a Nvidia Graphics card, - there is a known conflict between Direct X ver 9 and the lastest drivers for Nvidia - many of us had had very good luck in rolling back the Nvidia drivers to earlier versions (5 something I think).
There are multiple threads about it here in the forums - also try the apothocary.
Good luck

:furious3: :furious3: My VI crashes even before I can come to my VI main menu (which means crashes in startup). It worked fine previously, but suddenly it's all messed up. Though I have a crappy card of s3 ddr prosavage, it worked good long time ago. I want to get back to the game, but I can't!!!!! :furious3:

I recently took MTW off my older system (WindowsME) and loaded it on my newer 3.2 gig (XP) rig. I also transferred my game save file since I was in the middle of a campaign. The new system has an Nvidia card. I had no problems loading an instant battle, but loading the strategy map in the campaign caused a CTD everytime.
I tried 3 different drivers with no luck. Then I hit on a fix. I had the strat map resolution set on 1024 X 768. For some strange reason this was my problem. By changing it to either a higher of lower resolution setting-- everything worked just fine. It seemed to make no difference what the setting was on the battle map nor what was set for my desktop---only the strategy map.
I would still get an occasional CTD going from a battle map back to the the stat map, but by setting the battle map to the same resolution as the strat map, this problem stopped too. Even with all of this I still get a rare CTD while in the strat map (usually when rotating through the stats parchment to set tax rates) but nothing I can't live with. I just quick save a lot to be safe.
While playing around with the resoluton setting might not work for everybody--it's certainly worth a try.
I fixed it by installed an older graphics card driver ~:)

Man, I can't reverse my computer and restore it, because someone is sharing the same computer. But in about few months the person is moving, so this computer becomes mine. Then i'm gonna restore the whole thing and install mtw and play with u guys. btw, is there any ppl who play mtw multiplayer now??
