What think should be done is that, well I'll say it in this way. I only play RTW and so I would like just to be awarded with RTW avaters, and you can do in this way. say you've have 10 in your postcount then it'll say "congraulations! Because you've reached 10 in your post count you may choose one group of avater from the selection we have. So let's say this guy wants a RTW avater, he would choose a RTW group of avaters. Simple!

Well what if someone wants to switch between say RTW and STW avatars, but he chose the RTW avatars , what then ?
I agree with you on one part though , that I only play RTW and would only like RTW avatars, but that may not be the situation with other members ~:)

I like the system as it is now

I thought this was already done , at least that you could chose between say roman diplomate and such , so what you are suggeting is that you put all the avatars under their corresponding game..

I thought you meant that you had to chose between one group and that that choise would be for ever so to speak .

How does that differ with what we already have?

That was just a EXAMPLE, You can choose whatever group of avaters you want like STW groups and MTW groups.

The current avatar galleries draw from a collection from STW, STW:MI, MTW, MTW:VI and RTW and there are plans in the works to allow custom avatars. What do you want which isn't already available?

Copperhaired Berserker!
06-12-2005, 21:32
No, you don't understand. You only get one set of avaters each time.

Only STW or MTW or RTW avatars Berserker?

Copperhaired Berserker!

I think what Berserker like is limiting poster to choosing avatars from your favorite RTW games. However, I agree that our current system is already better, especially since it encompasses all three games. ~:)

Btw, Tosa, when's the next avatar poll(s) coming?

I think he wants to be able to filter out the STW and MTW avatars when making his choice?

I think the current system of Avatars is good. It is well thought out and appropriate. It even shows some semblance of civilization development, up from barbarians through to romans.

If anything, it would be nice to see an "avatar drop box", where members could submit created avatars for use on the forum. For example, If I wanted to use an Avatar that I created, then I would submit it to the Avatar moderator who would approve or deny the submission (thus avoiding inappropriate avatars and avatars from outside games). The submission could be labeled "for own use only" or "for community access". Perhaps a member with a certain number of posts, or senior members would be the only ones allowed to submit exclusive use avatars. All others could only submit for community use, to be appropriately placed in the Avatar post ladder.

Just a thought.

TosaInu

yes that is right

So the answer to either STW or MTW or RTW isn't nope, but right?

So, what you roughly say is that you want more categorization. Whether it is a good thing to lock the other categories once you select one, has to be seen. The con of doing such a thing is that a member can never change his mind (or he would have to contact staff). Imagine for example someone being perfectly happy with playing MTW today, while not liking RTW (possible, no?) and being even happier when BI is shipped and thus wanting a BI avatar.

Hardcoding such a thing is also not great for people who just want to be able to choose from the whole available array at any time of the day.

The current system however, does not limit you in any way to do what you want. There are batches of RTW avatars available for you, if that's what you play, and more batches become available when you post more.

The possibility to have categories is something I'ld like to see too. Browsing the userCP/Avatar section will become easier, for you can decide to only display the RTW subcategories.

Not sure where else to ask this, but is there somewhere I can see a list of how many posts gets you which category of avatar?

I saw someone mention it before, but I haven't found it after a quick search.

The list is on the top of the mainpage of the org. There reads Show Avatars.

I have to ask exactly why we can't use custom avatars hosted from our own hosts; it's not like a 3kb 50x50 gif is going to kill anyone's connection.

If every user on this board could be trusted to host an avatar that was suitable and that did not breach the forum rules then I'm sure this would be an option. However, unfortunately as we are regularly reminded, that is not the case.

I personally am grateful for the current idea of the site hosting a custom avatar, it means I won't be left *naked* when my site runs out of bandwidth

It is also do with giving a more close knit feel by having themes.

If you're referring to the size of the image by that, vBulletin automatically checks the physical size of the image and how many pixels it takes up. But, since you're probably referring to someone posting a picture of a nice pair of breasts, wouldn't that problem also be prevalent in custom signatures?

IIRC, the admins and mods are currently discussing the reintroduction of custom avatars, but then with a theme guideline, vB's checking abilities and, if I am not mistaken, on the main board and not a separate skin like the old days.

I'm quite happy with my Nag Cav :)

I like how you can often tell when someone joined up just by looking at their avatar.

Well, it wouldn't necessarily be a problem if it was a _nice_ pair

Seriously, though, I understand your point, we police the signatures so why not the avatars as well? Perhaps there's some technical reason for it, but from my perspective for some reason that it always seems that you get more trouble, content-wise, with avatars than with signatures. Don't know why.

And as Papewaio said, the Total War avatars have become part of the Org's style that sets it apart from other TW fansites.
