is there any way to disband units

When playing the campaign i often want to get rid of units that i have built earlier and replace them with better units. Is there any way i can disband a unit?

there are details on combining them with better units to get them all up to the better weapons, armour etc.

i thought that when combining units the final unit is just a random combination of the two previous units, there is no way to make sure that it has the best armour, honor?

I read that in JeffM's FAQ from totalwar.org d/l section. Dont know if its true?
