I'm sure this has been asked but a search didnt pull up what I wanted. Whats the rules concerning how much valour each unit gains during a fight?
(I'm talking MTW, VI)
From my own observations:
-you get much less valour capturing routers (fair enough)
-killing the enemy general gives you extra? Not certain about this, but in the first few turns of a campaign game I charged a knight unit in their first battle into the rear of a pinned enemy monarch and they killed him (their only kill). Battle ends and the unit gets +1 valour.
Can anyone put some numbers on it for me?

beating non-routing enemy. Just get your cavalry to charge a bunch of archers

You definetly get valour from capturing routers, but you have to catch a lot. Also missile units get valour from ranged kills, but less per kill than hand to hand. Still dont know exactly how many you have to kill in each situation.

Killing Generals and Royalty give bonus to valor experience.

I decided to do some testing on custom batles and the start of campaign to try to put numbers on this and heres my (meagre) results so far:

Ranged damage - Valour 0 or 1 archers need to kill 2 men each (with arrows) to go up 1 valour level. eg 60 archers have to kill 120. Valour 2 or higher need more kills than this. This was true against peasants or spears or militia though, I havent tested against eg. royal knights so I dont know if the target affects valour gained.

Hand to hand - I'm struggling to get a good answer for this mainly because my testing guys keep inconciderately dying in combat! I was trying valour 0 or 1 beserkers with full armour and weapon upgrades against archers told not to fire and hold position (halting the beserks if they try to chase routers). It all goes great for a few hundred kills and then one of them will die which kinda mucks up my counting - also they always catch a few routers too.

My only other observation was that when I briber El Sid in the campaign he went up 1 valour in his first battle after 0 kills and catching

Look at your battle logs. That shows valor, increase in valor # of kills (enemy and friendly) and outcome (victorious, withdrrawn, routed, captured, dead) of every single man in the battle on both sides.

Well, what you could do is to use a maxed out JHI unit or Gothic Foot Knights or Varangian Guard on peasants. They're pretty near invulnerable with full upgrades.

You could just mod a unit to be super powerful.

Well....

By killing a Royal General or heir you get plus valour... I once got +2 valour to my HRE king by killing the Pope!!! ~D

The battle log was a great suggestion and I have had a lok, but there are a few problems. Firstly it only gives friendly and enemy kills and you dont know wether they are ranged, melee or catching routers (or which unit they were against). Secondly (probably because of above) I had men with the same starting valour and same number of kills who gained different amounts of valour. Thirdly I had to check the logs from campaign battles because the multiplayer logs didnt show the valour increases. Is it just me or does every single guy (even from a beserker unit with hundreds of kills) have the same valour at the end of the battle.
I also noticed that your king gets a hefty chunk of starting valour - my Spanish king started the game with 6 and the rest of his unit was 0.
