Al Pacino.
So many actors to choose from I couldn't possibly name a favorite. However, if forced to choose I'd go with...
Gary Oldman - I firmly believe Gary is the best actor of our times. He gets a bad reputation for being 'over the top' but that's really on account of the types of roles he's been given, Hollyweird is notorious for pigeon holing actors into certain types of roles. I'm a huge film buff and of all the films I've seen from yesteryear and today I've never seen anyone who could change their appearance, let alone their accent or their voice like Gary does. Regarding recognition Gary's biggest problem is that he often gets really juicy roles in some seriously mediocre films. His portrayal of Beethoven in "Immortal Beloved" was unbelievable. Were it not for the film being so damn mediocre I believe Gary would have received massive critical acclaim for his performance.
Beyond Gary I'd have to go with Alec Guinness, Lawrence Olivier or Meryl Streep... before she had that sex change operation...

Al Pacino.
I second that. Greatest freaken actor EVER!
Brando is also pretty amazing. De Niro is not bad, but he seems to play the same character over and over, although I loved him in GoodFellas.

Meryl Streep.

I actually find my opinion reversed with BP. I like DeNiro better, I think he has more range. I like Pacino too, but Pacino is always 'Al Pacino as a blinded army colonel', or 'Al Pacino as the devil...'. I think he was much better when he was younger.
Nobody's mentioned Denzel Washington, so I will. Yes, he does a LOT of action movies, but he does more than just that. I find him to be pretty believable in just about anything he does. If you don't think he has range, rent 'Training Day', but don't say I didn't warn you, it's violent.

...Meryl Streep.

Id say Anthony Hopkins. There is something very deep in that man.
Hmmm tough one if I had to choose I'd say Mickey Rourke, with Christopher Walken, Pacino, Deniro respectively. Benicio del Torro is also good-"Who is this Kaiser Soze?" ~D

Al Pacino, De Niro, Ray Liotta (He is pretty Versitile) and Denzel Washington (Training Day is brilliant, as well as Man on Fire. Everytime I see a movie starring him I know it's gonna be good.)
My favourite movies of all time are Scarface, Goodfellas and the Godfather Trillogy and Heat.
Anthony Hopkins... if you dont think so watch Shadowlands.
Other favorites: Jeremy Irons, Christian Bale and Jack Nicholson.
Edit: Have to add Edward Norton to the list
No real favorite, especially since a lot of the guys listed here have decided to take some crap roles in recent years. Probably need to add Edward Norton to the list, he's one of the better younger actors out there today. And Bruce Willis has done some good work lately (along with some bad).
Lots of good actors already named, but I'd have to add Steve Buscemi and Kevin Spacey.
I'll add John Malkovich as well. ~:) :charge:

Oooh, Star Wars I-III aside, Samuel L. Jackson is pretty damn good.
Oooh, Star Wars I-III aside, Samuel L. Jackson is pretty damn good.He got screwed out of an Oscar for Pulp Fiction. That role was made for him. Speaking of PF, Harvey Keitel should get some love here.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Robert DuVall... also a great actor (and my one of my favorite)
Although you just can't beat Al Pacino in "Scarface".

I am going to go with John Wayne here, he had to have been good, otherwise why is he in every western?

Rod Steiger.
Simply put, his portrayal of Napoleon in Waterloo is the finest piece of acting I have ever seen, bloody brilliant, what a man.

You know, I've never understood why distinguish actors & actresses. I'm not trying to sound like a 'feel-good' lefty on this one, and I'm sure to some, I probably do, but we don't (or at least not officially) have the position of: male test engineer, female test engineer, male janitor, female janitor, etc.
Why the distinction? And does this mean women should be banned from "Inside the Actor's Studio" ?
i vote for Jeffrey Combs. utterly amazing actor. one of the richest (in terms of talent) and most versatile actors of all-time.

Interesting choice. Are there any movies he played major roles in? I only remember his performance in two roles in DS9 - which I personally liked very much.
There were some rumours in the pre-production phase of LOTR that he would get the role of Wormtongue - of course this id not happen in the end, but I think he would have been perfect for that role.

he'd be perfect in any role
coincidentally, he was also in a 1996 movie by the LOTR director called The Frighteners. in that movie he does an uncanny impression of Jim Carrey. which of course, is only because they must have told him "act like Jim Carrey". guess they didn't wanna pay the super big bucks to actually get Jim Carrey himself. but no matter because Jeffrey Combs did an immaculate job imitating him ~D
he also played Shran (the Andorian blue guy) in Enterprise (IMO he was the only thing that made that show worth watching in the least bit). his Shran role was radically different to his DS9 roles. if you stack up all those characters together, you'd probably never guess that it was the same one actor playing all three. they are totally 3 different people entirely - the hallmark of a brilliant actor
he is also in the wildy popular "Reanimator" horror films, although i haven't seen any of those yet

Indeed - I wasn't even aware that he played Shran ~:)
BTW, I thought the DS9 overall had an absolutely excellent cast of supporting actors, Jeffrey Combs being one of the best among them.

i totally agree. in my view DS9 had pound-for-pound the most talented ensemble of acting greatness ever put together in the same production; and funnily enough, they do not even comprise of the "main" actors of the show.
it would be easy to list any of them as the best actor ever too, along with Mr. Combs.

Actually its quite common to refer to women as actors. While I prefer the term actresses, I've heard of women being called actors in many venues.

Now this is a real toughie...coz all the above are excellent thespians ....but for shear emotional impact, just from expressions, then the winner by a clear mile is Lawrence Olivier as the Dutch Doctor in a 'Bridge too Far'....
it just coveys all the pain and loss in a 3 minute scene ...a masterpiece ...and I defy anyone to refute this *throws gaunlet down* ~D

If we're talking best single performance ever, Ben Kingsley for Schindler's List. Hands down. Come to think of it, he's had quite a few jewels in his crown. I'm adding him to my list.

Not to forget his stellar performance in "Ghandi". Seldomly have I seen a role casted so perfectly before.
As I just watched Léon. I would also like to "nominate" Jean Reno (for that movie and for e.g., Roseanna's Grave.

Who'd he play? I don't think he was Schindler, was he? Was he Goeth? Quite a good movie, if I may say so myself.
Another good actor is Mel Gibson, in a few movies.

Geez, I'd forgotten about Ben. Ja, he's definitely top notch. From Gandhi to Don Logan, the pent up psychopath bully in Sexy Beast, Ben Kingsley can pretty much do it all.

Ah he was the clerk dude, I think his name was Isak Stern.
john leguizamo or however you spell his name. and james cromwell. john has played luigi in super mario brothers. he was the evil clown in spawn. i saw him in some boy meets girl movie that i don't know the name of, tybalt in romeo and juliet (the claire danes, leo de caprio version), i think he's also in to wong foo thanks for everything julie newmar, as well as summer of sam. james has been the dorky father of anthony edwards in the original revenge of the nerds, the bad cop in l.a. confidential, and the prim and proper farmer in babe. the thing i like about these guys is that they can show up in completely unrelated genres and make it really work. i see the character not the actor. by contrast, if i see tom cruise in a movie, i go 'hmm its tom cruise in blah blah blah.' i only see him in action or heroic type movies. i doubt i will ever see him in a slapstick comedy or as the evil stalker in a horror movie, not that he can't do it, but rather just because for whatever reason, he is typecast into doing only certain genres.

Ben Kingsley also almost ruined his career with Thunderbirds.

Robert de Niro is great, but his latest movies are all microwave-entertainment. Al pacino or Harvy Keitel perhaps... Of the new ones, Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are excellent. Someone chose Sean Connery, I very much disagree, Sean Connery can only play Sean Connery if you ask me.

The thing about Harvy Keitel is that he doesn't get that many parts in famous movies. He was great as the wolf in Pulp fiction and was also good in red dragon.

Keanu Reeves is the absolute worse actor ever. His voice and facial expressions have to no range whatsoever. I can't believe that guy is hired by everyone and getting paid the way he is. It baffles the mind to think of all the actors who are far far better and get to no work.

exactly...the guy has the acting hability of a piece of wood...all he can do is stand there with that dumb "nobody´s home" expression on his face....
it worked great for the first matrix movie...because his character is suposed to look dumbfounded during almost the entire movie...but it doesn´t work anywere else.

I'm not sure how much it cost, but I'd say A Bridge Too Far has one of the greatest casts ever:
Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, Gene Hackman, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Robert Redford to name a few.

Deniro? Bah! I used to think he was great when I was young, then after repeated viewings I realized he's a one note actor who relies far too heavily on the Method school of acting. So does Harvey Keitel and Christopher Walken for that matter.
But I will give Deniro a huge thumbs up for his excellent portrayal of Rocky Marciano in Martin Scorcese's 'Raging Bull'. It's a fantastic performance in a fantastic movie. Raging Bull is without a doubt Scorcese's best film. Good Fellas comes a close second.
