View Full Version : Poll: What's your favorite game genre?
This may be a dumb question to ask in a community devoted to a strategy game, but what kind of games do people enjoy the most? And why?
Personally, I started off a wargamer but have become seduced by the immersion, atmosphere and rewards of role-playing games.
Well It was actually a hard nut for me as I love FPS`s, but I voted strategy as that`s what I likes the most.

I'm pretty new to RTS and it still hasn't immersed me as much as my days of FPS and Action games. And lucky for me, FPS and Action is the same category.
That got my vote. (FPS/Action)

RPGs. I love the Total war games, but that's it for the strategy and historical wargames. The rest of my favorites are RPGs.

Strategy, but not the click fests.
I really liked FF7 and FF6, but I never really got into any other RPG. I played the first chapter of Neverwinter Nights but got bored early on in the second one (clickfest !). I played a bit of Planescape Torment, but then I thought I might as well read a book. I played and finished FF8 but I didn't like it that much.
I used to be a big FPS fan, always single player. I haven't bought an fps since half life (which I still think is very overrated). I might get Painkiller now it's on budget, the demos were really fun.

RPGs for me. I love some strategy games - but it's games like BG or KOTOR that really tie me to my computer.

I like historical wargames/strategy the best, but I play almost all genres except sports and puzzle/adventure games.
I voted strategy games as I have played traditional RTS's such as Command and Conquer, as well as turn-based one such as the Civ series. It also includes the Total War series and HoI2.
I have played a fair few FPS's though, including Half-Life, Call of Duty, NOLF1 and 2. I also love Trackmania (I think the original is better than Trackmania Sunrise).
The only RPG's I have played are KOTOR1 and 2, but recently I have been playing World of Warcraft loads (it's been like a second life in the past few weeks, talk about obsessed ~D ).

Other = hybrid games.
For instance history/wargame+simulation+role playing...sounds like a nice game ~D
shooter+sports? hmmm ~;)
Flightsims!
Right now I'm playing the new 4.0 patch (leaked ~D ) version of IL2FB+PF. Fantastic stuff.

I polled Other because I can't decide... I like good games in any genre (except sports games, if you want the play football go the the park!!!)...
If I had to pick one genre at gun point though I guess it would be shooters, not because they are shooters but because I love immersion and one of the first things for an immersive is placing you in the character, literally inside looking out that characters eyes and making decisions for them. Even third person is more like watching an unfolding interactive story, but first person is where it is at...
For me if Stalker gives what it is promising it will be a perfect game (almost)...
So in first-person/RPG/shooter a sub-genre or a sub-sub-genre?? ~D
Oh... If you can drive vehicles, fly planes and spaceships to. that will be cool...
Take GTA, imprve the Gfx to a full shooter standard, make it 1st person and give it to a talented RPG house to build the story and sdventure... Drool....
RPGs
Morrowind and Vampires the Masqaurade:Bloodlines are my 2 fav PC games of all time, followed closely by shogun of course.

Turn based strategy and Role playing - in this order. All time favorites: Civ Series, Baldur's Gate series, everything by Paradox, the Krondor RPGs, and of course Total War series. Oh, and MOO2 (MOO3 was a major super flop).

Strategy. As opposed to the tactics games that people usually call strategy.

Was a dificult choice as i love all games! Grant tarismo 3 and 4 both great games. Also strategy. I remeber when red alert was stil new me and my freinds were hooked to it! Also the formidable Civ series were great. And the king of strategy, Total war series!!!
But my favourite is FPS. I cant forget the great FPS's such as Medal of honour,Goldeneye for the N64 and the game that perhaps almost every time ure mates are round you end up playing, Timespliters 2. So there it is my choice! Also is Zelda an RPG if so that's got to have a mention. Any one reading this buy an N64 just to play Zelda.N64's are dead chep anyway now. You may say why not just buy a gamecube and play it? Its not the same. It just isn't. Even after playing the first zelda ocarina of time and its sequal Majoras mask no game has matched them. The magic of Zelda is one that i can not describe. Just pleaze play the game. Anyway i think i have ranted on anough about Zelda. Any way BUY IT!!!!!!!!!! ~D ~;)
YUP, OOT is the the greatest game ever. EVER.

Yeah man I remeber spending 21 hours straight with no food, and 6 cokes on the first playing of zelda: ocarina of time. Man that game had me hooked. 4 weeks later when I had finally beaten it, I was physically and emotionally exhauseted. While cheap by today's level standards, when it first came out, the area's we big and interactive. Such great times.
Very tough call. Each genre has great games that stand out and make me want to say that one, just for that certain game. Case in point; Half-life 2 was an amazing ride just as the first was. Playing through there's a sense that something is going on behind the scenes and you are just a gear in a much bigger machine. Just when you think you've got things figured out, your foes will say something that makes you wonder if the cause you're fighting for is truly just and worth it. Though FPS games need a story for me to be really interest. Games like UT are fun for a while, but get old eventually. Unless you go online, then it turns into amazing fun. Tribes 2 took three years of my life away in clan competitions, but i can't complain. i met some great people thanks to that game.
RPGs like KOTOR and Diablo also stand out in their genre as well. I bought kotor because, well...honestly because i had heard it was a good rpg, and man i was surprised. Not only was it a great game, but it expanded the SW universe, giving you a more indepth look at the Sith and Jedi teachings. The game immersed you(at least me) effectively enough that I didn't want to stop playing until I was done. Its sequel, KOTOR II, did much the same as the first, only MUCH better (imho). It made you question even acts of kindness, making you wonder if the Jedi were really so "righteous" as they claim to be. Diablo and its sequel were also great games, Diablo 2 was the first PC game I ever got and its because of that i really started playing my computer seriously. So that counts for something ~D
I don't really like simulation games or sports games, i can't get into them for some reason. except the gran turismo series. That is a great game series all around. In the third installment i had a Viper GTS with 1110 h/p. it was fun to race that one car ~D.
RTS games got old after AoE 2, they quickly became the same old thing of 'build a base and move out'. The most recent RTS to hold my interest was Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, but only because of the amazing visuals and the cinematic like death animations. And, of course, the Ork voices "Pull da pin, throw the other part!" ~:)
Strategy, well, these are just great. STW was the first turn based strategy game i ever gotten, and I must say it was by far the best. The amazing ingame cut scenes of assassinations and that lot, the battles and the campaign map. I just couldn't believe it. It was everything i had ever wanted in a pc game, and the TW series has since been some of the best games i've bought.
All in all, i'd say a tie between RPG and Strategy games. great thread btw ~
I think strategy and historical wargames are quite close to each other.
I voted strategy because I don't mind historical mistakes in games, they should look a bit like reality and just be fun to play, that's all.
I prefer total war over other strategy also because it's not so chaotic. In Age of Empires II, for instance, I was clicking and staring all the time. In TW the campaign map is relax and from time to time you have a short focus, but it's way better then AOEII.
nice poll! ~:)
Can't give a favorite. FPS, RPG and Strategy are all on the same level for me.

hard to give one answer , I really loved all the zelda series for the cube/N64 played them all extensively ( all but Majora's Mask ) I just loved the great feeling the game gave you when you beat that o so irritating and hard water temple....priceless.
Can't wait for the next zelda game ( due end this year, for the cube ) I read the preview at ign and it sounded great. I already know that that game is not going to give me a moment of sleep for at least a week or 2. ~;)
I also like ( other ) roleplaying games like morrowind , although I never quite played that game as much as I played the zelda series.
However I am really looking forward to Oblivion ( SP? ) the next morrowind game, looks very good.
as for simulation games , I have and like IL-2 Sturmovik ( forgotten battles ) for the pc , great AI and great graphics to back it up, the game really has a great atmosphere, especially when you're shooting that german mig that just shot down your wingman. :duel:
However that is the only simulation game ( flight sim ) that I enjoy , I have Microsoft Flight sim. 2004 but that game I find is just to difficult.
And well, the total war series have got me nailed to my pc the moment they came out, admittedly I started playing since RTW, but I have bought MTW ( + VI ) and I am hoping to give them some play time also.
So in the end i voted for the strategy option.
:balloon2:
I like rpg and turn-based strategy most (shame these TBS are so rare), I can spend hours looking for the best gun/sword/combinations etc. This is a curse, I ALWAYS restart my games after a while, and hardly ever finish them because I get bored playing the same parts over and over again. I guess I am a powergamer ~D

I can't pick a favourite genre, but they include
Strategy - STW, MTW, Civ, SMAC
FPS - Half Life, MOH, RTCW, Halo
RPGs - BG, BG2, PST, IWD, KOTOR, Morrowind
Sports - NHL series, FIFA series, Champ Manager series
Probly a toss up between RPGs and Strategy tho.

Yeah RPGs! I am a late comer to the RPG genre, but it is my favorite right now. FF VI, FF VII, FF X, FF X-2, Xenogears, Xenosaga I, Chrono Trigger (yes, I suck at Squares teat...so sue me), KOTOR I and II, Disgaea... I just love stories in games.
But then...I also like battles of wits (which none of the above are by a long shot) so that is why I am here!

In that case you should really try and get hold of the Baldurs Gate series - if you've not already played them that is. You should be able to get them cheap, or pick em up off ebay. And you should especially get Planescape: Torment. It uses the BG engine, but takes the story and character development to a whole new level. Theres a lot of hardcore RPG players at the org, and their favourite RPG is a toss up between KOTOR, PST and Fallout.

RPG is by far my favorite, but if i could select multiples I love sims, historical, and strategy as well.
Strategy games are fun, I like alittle arcadeyness thrown in though. I get lost in too much micromanaging.
I love role playing games like prince of Persia
I have only played the original. 2D scrollinglike. Lots of fun, took me a long time to complete it. Fencing someone into those crashing death jaws was a gas!

The only RPG I really like is the Mass Effect series, and thats a RPG/FPS Hybrid.
Strategy games are fun, but they need time and I dont always have time.
I really enjoy FPS, but ones with depth like Ghost Recon. COD is fun but not for long.
I like a really engaging game regardless of genre. I have favourites from all the genre's on the list. If I was forced to pick I'd probably go with RPG, but I just really love big immersive games that I can get lost in.

Even though this is a very old, old thread.
I want to like RPGs. I really do. I just can't.
Strategy would be mine.
It took me quite a while to think about this and I struggled to narrow it down to a single genre, but I just ended up looking over the games I can remember playing most over the last year or so and went from there.
Given that I played alot of Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Fallout throughout 2010, it's obviously roleplaying games; I'm not really fond of JRPGs like Final Fantasy though... I'm more of a Bioware/Blizzard/Bethesda gal.
A close second would be action/adventure or music/rhythm games; I'm enjoying alot of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Rock Band 3 at the moment. :3

I always love role playing games because i have much confidence in myself and when ever i have time i love to play games online and mostly i played girls games (http://www.girlsgamesgate.com/).
Given that I spent the whole weekend playing Dragon Age, and other RPGs have drawn me in in similar ways, it has to be roleplaying games. I've never really touched a JRPG though.
I would however wish for a bit more variety as well, so many of the ones I played had a variation of the "order vs. chaos" thing, like there are no other things to decide between.

I was split between RPGs and strategy but reasoned that I like RPGs that have strategy elements and am not half as keen on those that i.e. only feature one player customisable/controllable character. I guess it all blends when you get to leveling and skills, but its always the "how can I best make my character/squad/party" that I like best about RPGs. I get tired of RTS' pretty quickly though as they are a) mostly about micro managing and b) so short sighted. I really like to have a grand startegy -be it planning a character for 30 levels of hack'n'slash or (even better) a world map to paint in my faction's colour.
I would however wish for a bit more variety as well, so many of the ones I played had a variation of the "order vs. chaos" thing, like there are no other things to decide between.
Fallout: New Vegas seems to have choices of grey or gray, that's about it; I found it difficult to find solid black and white choices like you do in Mass Effect or Dragon Age.

I used to devour FPS games then I changed to RTS but now I play games like mass effect, half life and the old deus ex.
Basically I want to be told an interesting story.
My mind gave me a list of those games which have taken up the greatest portion of my life with my knowing and loving consent, and I have come to the conclusion that I am an RPG person with strategy coming in as a close second. If the two are combined, my life is amazing for many many hours.
