My recommendations:

The Gods Must Be Crazy I and II

These films possess a unique charm and nostalgia. The second Crazy film was particularly entertaining and seems to be one of very few sequels I would rate more highly than the original. But a warning: after these two, the rights to the name were bought out by a Hong Kong filmmaker. What followed was a travesty and an abomination upon films.

Seven Samurai

Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece, IMHO.

Kill Bill I and II

Of course! Kill Bill I, in particular, demonstrates Tarentino’s flair with choreography for impact and impeccable sense of timing. A true showpiece.

If this is to be a DVD collection, I suggest you get plenty of made for DVD movies.
Movies that really benefit from DVD include:
The Matrix Trilogy
Alien Quadrilogy
Star Wars Episode II
Swordfish

Basically you want lots of explosions, gunshots and car chases to get the most out of the improved picture clarity and sound depth.

"Cleopatra" (the one with Elisabeth Taylor) would be an absolute must-have IMHO.
The box with the 4-hour version comes with a very interesting 2-hour documentary on the making of the movie.

I still hope that one day they find the missing material to restore the 6-hour version...

I bought the SuperBit high-quality DVD of Lawrence of Arabia. Great stuff.

I'd like to get The Bridge Over the River Kwai but for some insane reason it's always about $50 on DVD. Forget that.

If you are after classics you have to get King Kong the 1933 version. Night of the Hunter with Robert Mitchum, the Searchers, Shane, The Hustler, The Changeling, Outlaw Josey Wales, there are so many good films out there

The Humphrey Bogart Collection (The Big Sleep/The Maltese Falcon/Casablanca/Key Largo)


Four incredible Movies as only Bogy could do them. I just watched the Big Sleep again the other night.

These are all great movies and timeless classics. I still prefer these older movies to most of what hollywood produces these days.
