Daily Show: Hitler References (http://www.comedycentral.com/sitewide/media_player/play.jhtml?itemId=15751&poppedFrom=_shows_the_daily_show_videos_jon_stewart_index.jhtml&)

I made a post about this stuff a long time ago. Its really sort of wierd how this has taken off in America recently - not just by the Bush bashers, but by conservatives aswell.

I found the byte to be funny but it made the point I was trying to make. Bush isnt Hitler - Howard Dean isnt Hitler - Hitler was Hitler! ~;)

I'm of the opinion that there is no Hitler joke that isn't funny, but I agree with Jon on this one. When everyone is calling one another Hitler, things begin to lose perspective. Find new pejoratives!

i agree - it is overused by everyone

but they use it to illustrate the slippery slope theory
to show that if you create a law with such a massive loophole and further degenerative qualities - it isnt long before someone comes along to go totally agaisnt the spirit of the law

to compare someone to hitler is pretty stupid unless they are going for the new record as to how many people they had killed

but to use various examples from the third reich isnt
we use our founding fathers to show positives - we use the idea of jesus to exemplify selfless acts like saying something nice to someone

so what cant we draw paralells between percieved bad things?
as long as we do not equate - but rather compare in order to better illustrate our concerns

i am one who doesnt care about hitler references - and like to use the name of hitler to accuse anyone of even the smallest things

my manager wont let me leave the store - i tell her that im pretty sure that she is worse than hitler - and so on

just dont take it for more than it is - it is the people who really believe that someone is some sort of demon/hitler that we come across a problem - unless that person is actually trying to do what hitler did

It's a cheap tactic, that's all. Anyone can go up to anyone that has commited any light infringement and say they are hitler or a nazi. I think it's kind of childish, like in the school yard, when you call people names. Doesn't advance any issue, just lowers everyone's IQ.

Actually, up here we've taken to saying things like "What are you? George Bush?" when someone is doing something violent or suppressive of human rights.

There was a time when every TV show made jokes about Bush (some were stupid, but some were quiet good). However - never heard s.o. comparing him with Hitler.
Comparisons with Hitler only happen if someone is very upset. Afterwards everybody is very upset about the speaker ~D

It is overused. Just the other month someone called me Hitler. Not passing up the comic value of the moment, I snapped into a full salute. Good times...

Anyway, it is losing it's value. Time for some new ones. *points* TROTSKY! *points* STALIN! *points* POL POT! *points* MAO *points* LENIN! *points* KRUSCHEV! *points* ZHUKOV! (etc)

Whatever. Remember the more liberals you send over here, the more we will hate you. Our Conservatives are just as hardcore as the one's in the US, so more the more liberals the less conservativism in Canada.

I liked you old sig better. Mind you, the new one does at least show the US has an extremely limited number of bigots.

I am certainly not so ill informed as to equate Bush with Hitler. People who do that are merley engaging in hyperbole or are simply ignorant of history.

But If I use Bush's actions as an example of what I see as repressive or anti-democratic behaviour, than I am simply being topical. Whether I am right or wrong is beside the point.

I think that you all miss the point!
If a speaker compares a person with Hitler, than there are three reasons for that:
1. He wants to say that this person is very bad. There are better ways to do this. So he is stupid.
2. He wants to make it to the news. Then he is vain.
3. Or he has no arguement and wants to bring the discussion to a more emotional level. Then he is good in rhetoric. ~D
Example:
Panzer (for example) points out that Bush was fighting Saddam because he was a brutal dictator. I ignore that argument and tell him that Hitler was fighting Stalin, who was at least as bad as Saddam. So Hitler was better than Bush? Panzer gets upset, the discussion gets more emotional and I do not have to think about Panzers arguments any longer. ~D

You see? It is as simple as that ~D

one could be lead to think so ~D

Survival tips for right wing dictators in 1940's europe:
-if a war arrises....sleep with both sides to cover your bases
-once the the result is assured back the winning side
-persecute communists...thus assuring the support of the "democratic" winning side for another 30 years....

Well, yes, but Hitler made use of that type of argument in order to incite the German people to believe all that stuff about white supremacy. Freud talked about it once...something about "using vivid images rather than intellectual arguments". :smug2:
