View Full Version : Tim Henman
English assassin

I apologise to the rest of the world who are in blissful ignorance of this person.
Can anyone explain to me why, every year when Wimbledon gets going, we get this "Hen-mania" nonsense? Lets consider the facts:
1) He doesn't represent England, he's not the "English team" or anything like that, he's just a guy who makes a living playing tennis. Why should I support him just because he's English?
2) He's not very good. Also he's boring to watch. And he looks like a nerd.
3) To win Wimbledon this year he's going to have to beat Federer, which is going to happen right after I become undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion AND world 100m record holder.
Generally, who on earth cares if there are any British players in Wimbledon. So, we don't produce good tennis players. So what.

well I don't like him a lot, then again I am not english so way should I even support him.
He is not going to win, if he is lucky he will get to the quarter finals , as I said , if he is very very lucky.
the oppositions is just a little to strong, seeing him struggle in the first round like that yesterday didn't change my mind...he certainly is not bad, but he can't beat federer or hewitt or roddick ( sp? ) and I haven't even considered other good players like safin , nalbandian and nadal.
and about the hen - mania , well he is your best player ~;)

I wonder how he's number 8 in the world. His supporters of course say that "He has won other championships". What? Some tuppenny-ha'penny backwater playing against of unknown, un-seeded players?

He reached semifinals at Roland Garros last year. I like watching him just to see the English crowd go crazy.
honestly he is a decent player, he isn't brilliant and thats the reason he never has broken the quarter finals, you have to be good to win wimbledon, decent simply doesn't cut it.
thanks,
dizzy
He has got to the Semi's before hasn't he? Maybe my mind is deceiving me.
Anyway, I totally agree with you EA.
What do we care anyway, he is doing it for personal fame and fortune, not for the country.

Lawn tennis was invented in the late 1800's ,catering for the social set who were 'oh so bored' of croquet, hence Wimbledon,Fred Perry, blah, blah. Then inevitably Jonny Foreigner comes along and ruins everything by booting our apathetic sporting butts out of the show.Cricket,Rugby,Soccer...you can almost hear the collective cry of,'Come on chaps be reasonable,it's our game, start letting us win!'
Let's face it gents the only home grown 'sports'we're any good at are pub games, darts and snooker, stick a pint in our mitts and we rule ~
I'm up for resurrecting international shove ha'penny...who's with me? :deal2:

Next time we invent a game there should be a rule where "No foreigners are allowed to play".

yeah I always feel sorry for his opponent when Henman wins, I always ( talking about wimbledon here ) think he just wins just because the crowd loves him, and they even cheer when his opponent makes a double fault , I really don't like that.
Don't feel sorry for him, he just isn't good enough when it matters most.

Did a player not go mad last year when they kept cheering when he made a mistake?

i would just like to say in the 4 semi finals hes been in hes lost twice all the time to the eventaul winner .
and against Ivanisevic he was unlucky (rain delays)
i feel a bit sorry for him because of the pressure the crowd puts on him .
I think IF HE WASNT 'bRITISH' HE WOULD HAVE WON IT by now
excuse my rant i just feel a bit of sympathy for the guy

don;t know , you could very well be right though.
I would certainly go mad if the crowd was cheering for every fault I made...

Nearly ...he's a Canuck whos decided he's English. A bit like Owen Hargreaves. Dont suppose theres much demand for lawn tennis in the Yukon ~;) or footy for that matter.
That 18 year old Scot is going to win...
He did better than Henman despite apparently being ill.

That's probably just trying to make his win sound even more impressive. Media has only one person left to hype up, so I'm sure they'll make it some good hype.
I was reading it for the Sharapova info (of course ~D ), but since he talks about Henman I'll link it here.

Any comments from the Brits? When I lived in the UK, I was somewhat appalled by the pressure put on Henman come Wimbledon time. I was always amazed he played as well as he did, considering the circumstances.
