Japan faces pressure to quit IWC (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,15704505-2,00.html)
The IWC urged Japan to drop plans to more than double the number of whales it hunts each year for scientific research, passing an Australia-sponsored resolution saying Tokyo should not kill the whales to study them.
Japan sought an exemption to the 19-year old moratorium on commercial catches to allow it to take 150 minkes a year from the Okhotsk Sea in the Pacific, north-east of Japan, but the proposal was today voted down by 26 votes to 29.
The result fell well short of the three-quarters majority needed to pass the amendment and even of the simple majority that would have allowed Japan to claim broad support for the proposal.

Interestingly I just read an article about a Japanese fast food chain that added Whale Burgers to their menu - of course these burgers are exclusively made from whales killed for "scientific research"...

So they need to kill 150 whales a year for "scientific research". Do the Japanese think the rest of the world is stupid?

Do the Japanese think the rest of the world is stupid?
I'm pretty sure it's close to 800 for "scientific purposes". Apparently they do think the rest of the world is stupid. It would be nice if the rest of the world stood up for once and told them it isn't...

Apparently they do think the rest of the world is stupid.
I'm not sure if they really think so ... but as they apparently got away with it so far, they might actually be right if they believe so ~;)

Hence the last sentence in my post ~;).
How much of a problem is whaling for the population? If the whaling population can take it it is a bit hypocrit to cry herecy. I'd rather have them swimming then dead, but it sounds so selective to me. We eat pigs, highly intelligent and sensitive creatures(and tasty).

Pigsg are slaughtered in a relatively humane way, where as I don't think it is possible to do this with whales.
If the Japanese can show me they are using a relatively humane method, and are only hunting species for which stocks are plentiful, I will not have any issue with it. Given they can't do that on either count, I'm assuming they're not.
Their track record isn't great either. Do a bit of research about how they capture and slaughter dolphins. It's disgusting.
not to mention that it isn´t a very good idea to eat whale meat from a health standpoint.....considering that most whales feed off large amounts of plankton they pick up a large amount of pollution elements that stay in their system through their lives......i´ve seen data about the mercury content in whale meat and fat that is quite worrying.....if someone wants to go for that effect one might as well go suck on a termometer....

I'm not easily disgusted and no animal rights activist in any way, but I saw a report on that a while ago. It was simply disgusting (literally).
I think the main problems with the whales is their population, their numbers are pretty low, so overfishing can endanger the species, and future whale snacks !

You have some link? What to do with dolphins by the way, I never heard of someone eating them.

Japan is going to stop whaling?! Damn, I wanted to go there to becom a whaling captain...
The Japanese are not allowed a quota of 150 mink whales??
Well, it seems our whale export is secured… We have a quota of 797 mink whales this year.
Scientific research… pfff! Why not call a spade a spade.

Yeah, cause so many whales have teeth. :dizzy2:
I think it is sad that they "urge" them to. They should force them to stop killing whales for no purpose at all.

I'm more annoyed by the lying 'this is a scientific burger' then being more upright and honest about what they are doing.
As a science graduate in exploration geophyics I understand the need to use science in finding resources. But I have never called gold mining: a scientific measurement of the gold content in the ground with a byproduct of selling gold on the open market.
Basic dishonesty of this sort makes it hard to really believe that Japan could make a viable UN perm. Security member... as we all know how honest the other five are Britain, China, France, Russia, USA...hmmm maybe it makes them the perfect candidate . :help:

Always wondered why nobody use whales as cattle and start whale farms at sea. They are huge animals and pretty easy to keep track of with a electronic tracking.....
