It could be a number of things but first try and uninstall RTW and manually deleting all remainding files. It could also be a bad DL of the patch so you might wanna re-dl it. Since the game obiously worked well in vanilla and the prob occured after installing the patch this is the most obvious solution I can think of. Good luck! ~

Hey, i had the same problem on my laptop, just turn off the fog of war and you should be fine.
I think you can do it in game, but if you go into the preferences file you can change fog of war to false and that should fix it.
same thing, but that only happen when i press ctrl+A to be able to come back to my desktop screen and then click on the icon to get back.

A suggestion:
www.omegadrivers.net. I cured my black campaign map by replacing my stock Radeon IGP 345m driver with the Omega Radeon driver.
A word of warning:
The Omega drivers are not (I don't think) supported by any of the graphics card manufacturers... so before even thinking of installing a third-party graphics driver make sure you know what you're doing, back up everything of any value, create a restore point and dig out your (soon to expire) warranty. Oh, and follow any instructions to the letter!
I wasn't going to post this for fear of reprisals should it knacker your machine, but I know how annoying the black campaign map is!
Just don't blame me if it destroys your PC, OK? I did warn you! ;-)
Good luck finding a solution - phillydilly's workaround should certainly work if you don't mind being able to see the AI's moves.
