View Full Version : Need help installing on new comp
Zen Blade

Hey guys,
I'm an old member... way back, like from 2000.
I recently got a new computer and am trying to install STW:Warlord edition on the computer. The installation works, if I click to open the program the screen changes... making it look like the game will be loaded, but then it stops... and then the game doesn't load. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but I can't figure out the problem.
My computer is a Dell inspiron 600m.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Hello Zen Blade,
How're you doing?
I don't know about a solution, maybe you better ask the tech guys in the Apothecary?
Graphic driver?

Hey Tosa,
Still map making I see.
I'm doing ok.
How's everything going with you?
Yeah, I'll go check with the apothecary people. This computer is only 5 months old though... I had hoped everything would be simple.

Hi Zen blade,
we had your problem seveal times in the past months.
You can do a search in Apothecary and Sword Dojo.
But my best guess is that your Windows Media Player
is not the default player for .mov files.
If you're running WinXP or NT you may also want to run
Shoggy in "compatibility mode". (right click your
shortcut for this setting).
Hope it works
~
Hello Zen_Blade,
I had the same problem for months. Do as R'as said. It are probably the .mov files.
Have you seen that some of your old mates are back too? TenkiWarPRIEST and TenkiSoraroti are back to STW MP. Kurando and Koga No Goshi have been active at the .org lately too. ~:)
 To you.
Hope you fix it and get to play again. ~:)

well,
windows media player says I have the current version. It is also the default player for all media files.... however, I don't see any selection within windows media player for the ".mov" files...
any more ideas? any more specifics?

I would think you would have to find a .mov file on your computer somewhere, right click and make wmp the default player for this type of file.
Zen Blade

where are these ".mov" files in the STW folder?
I couldn't find any there. Or these files solely on the CD?
grrr... this is kinda annoying. My new comp can't play an old game.
I'll figure it out eventually.

Ups didI say .mov?
My fault.
I meant the mpg files in Evanims or Movies folder.
Double click them and you'll see which application is associated.
It should be Windows Media player.

Zen Blade

all the mpg's were fine.
However, I was looking at some other files and I came across some audio that had been switched to musicmatch for some reason. I just converted them back to windows media player... that might have been the problem (wave and mp3 files).
I'll try when I get home tonight.

I remember TenkiSoratoti saying he had this problem, and he fixed it. You could try pm'ing him to ask him how he did it. I saw this in the stw mp thread.

here's his reply
"I had the exact same problem and never found out why it happened. However, the problem resolved itself when I re-formatted my Hard Drive."
-I don't think I will be doing that....
sigh,
-Zen Blade
Don't give up! STW is worth the efforts as you probably remember. ~:)
At www.totalwar.com is a similar thread. Look in the 'Shogun' part and for a thread: 'STW drops to desktop at lauch'
Try to find help elsewere too, I mean at a forum for tech help. (not apothecary, just a non-TW forum)
Hope you solve it soon.

Alas,
I have failed.... my sword greets me warmly.
uhhh... this sucks. why is it that "advanced technology" sucks?
-Zen Blade
hi... i decided today to play stw again, i have the original game cd release. i installed the game and downloaded the patch. when i double click the shortcut i get the same problem that zen_blade has. i have tryed compatability mode but the problem is still there. i hope that someone finds an anwser to this problem, i have checked the web, but all i can find are posts with the same problem and no workaround.
i will leave the install on my harddrive for a couple of days, if i find no anwser to this problem, then i guess it is just the scenario of 'old game..not compatable with new technology'.
Hi, I'm a new member of the forums. I had the same problem and have just find a "solution" that worked for me. In my case the problem was not in Shogun, but in Starforce.
For those that don't know what Starforce is: it's a copy protection software that is included in some games (more each day it seems). In this thread in the Wargamer's forum you can find a guide to know if you have Starforce installed and a link to an uninstaller: http://www.wargamer.com/forums/tm.asp?m=100639
I used the utility mentioned in that thread to remove Starforce, and after restarting the computer, STW worked fine. So you can try this to see if it's your case too.
santi...many thanks.
stw works now that i have removed starforce from my pc.

Nah mate I was never in a clan; I had to stay impartial because I was the admin here during the S:TW days. I certainly remember tenki_warpriest though, a fine warrior.
All the best,

Oh what a stupid mistake of mine... Sorry Kurando :embarassed:
So you once were admin here? Cool. ~:) Are you playing any TW now or are you just here keeping contact with some old friends? Many of the old stw players think Rome isn't worth playing and play MTW or nothing at all now... I'm just new to stw mp.
p.s: you have the greatest avatar of the entire .org! ~ ~D

I'd have to say that Rome TW is pretty awesome + the idea any old school mark likes S:TW better is a bit confusing to me. I'm not sure on the MP level, but as far as Single Player goes R:TW is superior, imo.
Thanks for the compliment on the icon, I'd have to say that on the whole that I am prouder of that little yellow "battlefield award" that is just below the icon. It stands for 500 competitive victories + I really worked for it, I'll tell ya! Twaz a labour of love though + S:TW MP was a really great game in it's hayday. I'm glad to see that there are some diehards keeping the tradition alive.
I think I'll graciously bow out of the invitation to enter the S:TW MP arena, at this time I have other commitments. -Thanks anyway, I have seen some of your other posts and I'd say that you are a real gentleman, drisos. It's been nice getting to know you.

Yes I was talking about MP only.

That is indeed something to be very proud of!! but I'm a bit confused - are those stw battles? (or other TW) In total I played only 2 competitive battles, of which I won 2. Probably because I'm just too new to have played more... Well, respect to you for those victories! You must be a great warrior.

Yeah they were all, S:TW battles, I have never played any other Total War MP.
I think my competitive record was 509 and 96, but I wasn't all that great; there were some players whom I could almost never beat. I'd say that AMP was probably the best online player I ever fought; I don't think I ever beat him; he was so sound that there was virtually no weakness to exploit, even if you picked a better army for the conditions he was so fundimentally solid that I just couldn't get him down and out. Magyar Kahn was a close second; he was extremely inventive and he'd come at you in ways that you couldn't anticipate; Magyar Kahn wasn't as dangerous as AMP but I found it more unnerving to play him because you never knew what he was going to do, and everthing he did was designed to hurt you.
Surprisingly Tosa gave me a really hard time too, he didn't have a reputation as a elite player, but he used to drive me crazy because I could almost never get the upper hand on him. I guess I'd consider him my arch rival in S:TW, but he never knew it.
Anyhoo, there were some insanely good MP players back then; those "Lonely Wolves" guys were stone killers, and so were the old school Clan Celtiberos guys + to a man I found them almost impossible to beat. In brief, there were some great warriors in the S:TW ranks, but I was never one of them.
Yeah they were all, S:TW battles, I have never played any other Total War MP.
 Me neither.
Well I heard many stories about elite players... and I hear different names every time... :dizzy2: I think every player has it's own weakness and has it's own players he cannot beat easily so, ...
Am I mistaking or is 'Magyar Khan' the leader of the 'Grey wolves'? I never heard of AMP, but Tosa is still around.(as you of course knew) I guess he's too busy with his admin job here and other TW to play some stw mp with us. Sasaki isn't playing atm don't know why. (but you might not know him as he started playing stw mp rather late I thought.)

Hey, sorry to interrupt, but I finally got a new computer, and of course the first thing I reach for to put on is S: TW. I (ver very) sadly don't have WE, keep that it mind. Anyway, I installed it and it was doing fine, however, it wasn't the same as before, so I downloaded the v1.12 patch. Since then it's been freaking out on me. The first problem was when I was loading a battle. It said Hard sprites failed to load, and I think something about being out of video memory. Then it closed on me. It's only said that a couple of times, but a lot of my battles have units dissapearing, and green/brown barriers blocking my view. Also, in the menu, the screen flickers, except where there's movement it sort've refreshes (if I drag my mouse over it, it leaves a trail of non-flicker). I checked for Starforce and I don't have it. Is it a diagnoseable problem, or do I have to reinstall it without the patch?
Welcome to the .org and welcome to sword dojo!! ~:)
I never heard of this problem. Reinstalling might solve it but I doubt that as you just installed it...
I hope someone else knows how to help you and you will fix it. ~:)

Hi Chosokabe Clan
The screen flicker............
I know this problem.
Nothing to do with your install or the patch v1.12.
Its your firewall.
Are you running Windows XP SP2?
Are you running Zone Alarm?
If you have windows firewall go to Exceptions and enable the Shogun prog to access the internet.
Zone Alarm should give a pop-up asking you to allow Shogun program to access the internet. You need to tick the...remember this...box.
Edit: These settings are only for when you play STW online. Please remember to reset them back to what they were when you have logged off shogun.
Good luck

Thanks! I'll try that. btw, this isn't my first time here, I signed up a while ago, this is just my first post. I've posted on the other S: TW forums. The screen didn't flicker before I downloaded the patch though, so I thought it was the patch. I've never done multiplayer either, so I've never had to connect.
Thanks for the info Jochi! I've seen more have this problem.
hope you solve it now.

Hmm - I'm one of the "more" - I've got Shogun unblocked by my firewall, and still I get the problem. However - for some reason Zone Alert doesn't pop-up when I block then unblock Shogun - maybe I ticked "remember this" on unblock before, & forgot about it...
Either way - it's unblocked & the problem persists, any ideas?

YES!!! To anyone else having this problem, it has nothing to do with mov, mpg or compatibility options. Follow the link provided by drisos (above), scroll down to the link in the post that discusses STARFORCE, follow the instructions and return to Japan! Incidentally, the STARFORCE removal utility may be found at http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/sea...arch=Find&art=.

That seems Like a self explanitory sentance,
You dont seem to have enough Video ram,
if you use on board GFX maby you would need to Asign more ram to it in your Bios,
Or reducing GFX detail and resolution in game could help.
And if your unit types display looks like A wooden back ground "whilst in battle"
Then your probably running in software mode,
i dont advise any 1 to run stw in software mode, As you loose A lot of features, Including mouse look,
not to mention map editing abilaty.
Check your options.

Another possible cause of this problem is that you don't have enough memory to run shogun. If you have an old computer with few RAM or you just have a lot of other programs running this might be the case. Shut off other programs to solve this. If you need those other programs so can't shut them off, increase your virtual memory. To do that, go to windows system configuration and click 'virtual memory'. In there tick the box 'choose your own virtual memory settings' and set the max and min number of virtual memory to the same amount of MB. 500 MB should be more then enough. Click ok and try running shogun again.

Here I get all psyched to play Shoggie all day tomorrow and I've run into a major technical problem!!! I've not played STW WLE since mid-July. Yesterday, I pop in my WLE CD, in order to practice for today's games and discover that STW WLE will not open!! I've been getting the same problem the fellow who started this thread had. I pop in my WLE CD, the options screen comes up, I click on 'play STWLE' , then the logo box pops up...then nothing happens!!!
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program. I uninstalled every game program I've had since I last played STW WLE. My System Restore points don't seem to be working. I've run Spybot and McAffee Antivirus. I don't have a firewall, nor a router, nor am I on a networked PC. As Drisos and others can attest, I've played plenty of STW WLE on this very same PC. Yet now I can't get the bloody thing to even start!!!
Shambles tried to help me out a bit earlier this morning, to no avail. I tried the Starforce uninstall utility, but it claims that Starforce is not on my system. I've always had WMV as my default media player and I even double checked that it was still defaulting every media type. I suspect that the most likely culprit is Chessmaster 9000, which I installed on Thursday and uninstalled early today. I suspect that Chessmaster 9000 features a program like Starforce, because the game's readme file indicates that it has a security measure that requires that a player use their CD six times, in order to authenticate true ownership. I uninstalled Chessmaster 9000, even made sure to check the registry...though something there (associated with CM9000) might've escaped my scrutiny. This problem is still persisting and it's driving me absolutely mad!!! Someone help me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I figured it out....and absolutely screamed when I figured it out!!!!!! It was my frakkin Logitech Webcam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got the idea to simply disconnect it, after coming across something Shambles posted somewhere about Logitec Control software causing a conflict with STW WLE!!!!! Thanks to Shambles!!!! He ended up solving the problem after all!! Mind ya, I've been wrestling with this issue since early afternoon yesterday and it's now 7:47AM the next day!!!:x
So, in nutshell and especially because I never saw a direct reference to a conflict involving Logitech Webcams, but simply Logitech related software. If anyone encounters this problem and has a Logitec Webcam, you need simply unplug it and restart your system to play STW WLE. There's no need to uninstall the Logitech Webcam itself, simply unplug and reboot; then you'll be ready to rock and roll!!:D
By the way...I really wish I had known the solution were that simple yesterday afternoon. I would've gotten plenty of practice time in for today's games and I would'nt have uninstalled three other programs...two of which I invested a good deal of time into!!!>:
On the upshot...I really did get to know my PC a bit more than I did yesterday!;)

Hello,
New member Rascal just posted this question in the Entrance Hall:
Shogun wont run at all. I reinstalled it, swept for StarForce, patched it and changed compatability mode to Windows 95 and 98 but nothing. When I double click on the desktop icon to start the game the 1st screen comes up of the logo so it looks like its going to load. Then it crashes back to desktop and gives me an error report to send to Microsoft every time. Im at a total loss. Here is the thread I followed to try and fix this issue

Hey guys just posting here to try and find some more info. I'm having a very similar problem as the original thread here and I did everything that everyone posted to try. I cant get Shogun to work yet. Shogun wont run at all. I reinstalled it, swept for StarForce, patched it and changed compatability mode to Windows 95 and 98 but nothing. I tried it without changing compatibility and that wont work either. When I double click on the desktop icon to start the game the 1st screen comes up of the logo so it looks like its going to load. Then it crashes back to desktop and gives me an error report to send to Microsoft every time. Im at a total loss. I need any help i can get. Thanks in advance for any leads you guys can throw my way.

What kind of error?
Could you post a screenshot or write it down?
Here is the file the error report is including. Dont know how to take a screen shot of the error report but its huge, way to long to type.

Here is the file the error report is including. Dont know how to take a screen shot of the error report but its huge, way to long to type.
C:DOCUME~1\Rascal\LOCALS~1\Temp\eb16_appcompat.txt
It would be interesting to know the content of that text file.
Please post it.
Also, I ran something called System Comparison from the Shogun files and it says:

Don't worry. The tool from EA that you're using is build for win95 machines.
It doesn't have a clue what to make of your XP system. the diagnosis is completely worth- and meaningless. Your hardware should be fine.
Thanks for all the help so far R'as.
Ok, that file was gone in the temp folder so I ran Shogun again to get a new error report and this is the file:

Right i dont know if i understand the problem 100% But it sounds like a file accosiation problem...
It sounds like..
The Game starts..
Tries to play opening vid...
and goes POOF.
Back at desktop.
If thats right. I would start by making sure Windows media player is default player for file types STW uses.
Also.
If you have a Webcam stuck to your pc. "logitech expeshialy" Dissconnect it. and then try again.
Thats exactly whats happening. I made sure WMP was default for all associated files, reinstalled it, patched it, swept for StarForce, unplugged every USB connection I had, restarted and the new error report had a lot of stuff about Checksum or something like that. I can post the report on here but its long and I dont want to keep filling up the page with huge posts unless you want me to post it. Still trying everything I can. Throw me any kind of theory you have and I will try it (except a reformat). Thanks again everyone

Sorry rascal,
no idea what the error report says. It doesn't look as if it reports any error at all.
Have you tried what Shambles said? Try to open the movies from Shogun from the explorer and see if it works with your WMP.
Yes I have tried and the movies all play fine from the folder. I tried most of them and they all worked without a problem. There has to be something I'm missing...

A friend of mine reported a problem involving the movies that play in the game. Everytime he'd get to a point where certain mini-videos were supposed to play, the game would lock up, forcing a reboot of the PC (he couldn't even alt-tab out and shut STW down). Even when reloading a saved game afterwards, it would bomb at the same point. He said that it happened when a daimyo was forced to commit seppuku, or was killed and had no heirs (eliminated). These weren't necessarily the only times it happened, but he noticed a pattern that it always happened when these events occured. I think it has to do with the mini-videos because he said they don't play.
He's running WE with the 1.02 beta patch, on XP. If anyone has suggestions on how to address this problem, I (we) would certainly appreciate any information. Maybe the problem described here by Rascal is similar or related.
Thanks all.
I tried to reinstall it again and I noticed I was having some trouble when I needed to put in disk #2. When prompted I put in disk #2 but got a warning about no disk in the drive and had to click ok, retry and cancle several times to get it to continue the install. perhaps this is the problem and it wont install correctly?

Removing the videos from the game folder? Is that possible in WE?
Other than that it could possibly be a problem with his video player, or maybe not having sp2.

If I remember correctly, yes, the video files could be removed. I suspect however that when the game calls them and they are not there, a different exception will occur. It's worth a try though, and I'll pass along the idea. Thanks.

The STW crash issue has popped up at .com and here many times. Someone at .com found that at least a portion of the crashes has not to do with Win XP but with something else.
For the elimination of heirs, the crash is most likely related to the incorrect playback of the death poems. I had such a problem before where I installed a screwy codec pack. Attempting to playback the offending mp3 results in a squelching noise.
The remaining problems are likely caused by video codec problems. Installation of badly designed codec packs, video and audio filters, interference from even Nero 6 can cause STW to crash and not work. STW actually works fine on NT5 series of OSes, though with the nasty flickering background on the menu.
For the hanging of game without the playback of videos, it is most likely due to the corruption of the game. I had this occurrence(s) before with the excessive killing of Shimazu heirs and a non-heir general take over as the Daimyo (can be seen on the diplomacy scroll).
Santi Is The MAN!
Dude-I'm so addicted to this game, and I was so bummed since it wouldn't load.
I used that StarForce remover, and it worked like a charm.
I took every program off my pc and the next step was to wipe out my hardrive. Anyone having the same problem go to http://www.star-force.com/protection.phtml?c=70

Hi all! I'm new in the forum, but I´ve been playing STW for a while. I changed my computer 2 years ago, and today i´ve taken back my STW. I´ve installed it, run it, and started a new campaign. Then, when i click over finish my turn, the AI operates. But when i my second turn was supposed to start, the game blocks, and i´ve to clear it from the task manager. During this blocking, i can hear a piece of sound repeating again and again, but neither the image nor the mouse move. My graphics card is nVidia 5700 VE 256Mb, 1 Gb RAM, WINXP SP2. However, i can play single battles without problems. It seems a problem of some kind of file, but i cannot guess which one, since i´ve tried to play them from the cd and everything goes OK. WMP is the default player and so on..
Help would be appreciated.
Thx!!!

I had the same problem that others describe where the warlord edition crashes to the desktop on startup. The intro movie would show without any problems, but then it would crash when trying to load the game. I found this was because I had previously set the antialiasing in my nVidia display setting to 2x. Once I switched AA back to 'Application-controlled' the problem disappeared.
Hi, i was reading all the solutions for runing S:TW,tried them, but i doesnt want to start the game.
I install the game and the newest patch 1.12, unistalled the starforce, all archives are wmp.
When i run the game, i see all the movies intro, but when it goes to the mainscreen the game crashes to the desktop.
An error file is created in the games folder:

Geez, I can't get my Warlord Edition to run either, and can't find the 1.02 patch anywhere, not even at CA, the link to download at CA is for the 1.12 patch and even that does not work.
I am getting TW Eras and I hope that Shogun is fixed to work on Win XP SP2 because the 2001 Dreamtime version I have won't even start.
I click the start icon and the small splash screen comes up then goes off and that is it. It won't even start.
It's amazing there isn't a Win XP upgrade patch for this.
Thanx for any help, Chris

I got the 1.02 patch from your site here. Installed it and I still can't get the game to run.
I have used the Starforce remover, set the compatability to Win98, turned off my firewall and still can't play in single player or any other mode.
The game just doesn't boot.

I got it running!!!!! Problem seems to have been some BFME mods (don't laugh) I had on my computer. Starforce was not on my computer. Also, I get the flickering sometimes on the parchment screens used to choose campaign or single player modes, save games etc., but when in the game play itself I have had no problems. Have to play with the video card etc. settings, maybe set it back to 60Hz rather than 70Hz Refresh rate. I guess the game won't work at 75Hz refresh rate, and that was posted somewhere here.
So, Shogun works for me now. More from the Mori next morning.

One other thing, I had Nero 6 (unknown version or subversion of 6) and I removed it but that was not the problem. Problem was some BFME mods. Wierd.

I've found a few places I can buy Shogun, although not sure if/how they differ? i.e Shogun Total War Gold (which I found on amazon.co.uk)
But from numerous places I read, people either can't get the game to work on Win Xp or have many problems with it? ~:(
which is ashame as I'd like to get and play it

Hello, Swiss_Halberd_Pike_Landsknecht:
Shogun Total War can be had in several different packages:
STW - original units, buildings, building costs, and Sengoku Jidai campaign. Original unit stats. Guns cannot fire in rain.
STW Warlord Edition, or Mongol Invasions: - additional units, additional buildings, reduced building costs, additional campaigns (SJ, 1530, 1550, 1580 and Mongol Invasion). Revised unit stats. Muskets can fire in rain at reduced effectiveness.
STW Eras - the TW collection, in which STW WE/MI is included.
STW Gold Edition - essentially the same as WE/MI. We've observed that this may not be the best choice if you intend to try Multiplayer (some CD Keys would not activate, etc.).
I think these are the main offerings, if not all of them. You won't find the original version around much, I don't think. WE/MI is the dominant release.
Some have issues with the game on XP, some don't. I think much of the time it's not really XP causing problems, more often video cards, driver issues, etc..

thanks for the info Masamune
I might take the 'risk' and just buy it, as it's very cheap, will obviously be annoying if I can't get it to work, as it is the original of the TW series and I know is supposed to be really good.
Quite a few of the older games (in general) have problems working on XP, some can't work at all, others work fine (where you don't need to do anything), and some you just need to either tweak some stuff, or do certain steps.
I.e.: I was very annoyed initially when I couldn't get Thief: The Dark Project & Thief II: The Metal Age to work (even though on the back of the boxes it said it would work on XP), but looking around some different sites and forums, I found out how it by alt + tabbing out of the game when it got to the main menu, pressing ctrl + alt + delete and then selecting the affinity (can't remember if it was selecting it as 0 or 1, but both couldn't be at the same time), the game would work fine, as result I also got the big fan made Thief 2X: Shadows of the Metal Age 'mod' (but actually it was like a new game, with story, etc)
the only thing that wouldn't play were the movies, but the main thing was it worked. (And Thief 3: Deadly Shadows works fine without having to do anything, but then again that's much newer)
Good chance it will do just fine.
Nice to hear people still trying this out! I'm sure you will enjoy STW. ~:)
Good luck!

yeah it's also worth getting so I can 'complete' the collection (excluding Kingdoms expansion for M2), I would have them all plus the great Europa Barbarorum for RTW)
I'm also interested in that period, and am a big fan of primitive firearms (mainly up to matchlocks, but also interested in flintlocks)

the only shop I found Shogun in stock, was in 1 HMV store, they apparently have only 1 in stock, so I reserved that. Hopefully it is there, and I'll probably pick it up tomorrow.
That version is the gold one I think (as on the phone they mentioned it was £4.99 and reissued by sold out software)
http://www.sold-out.co.uk/support.asp?pid=281#783
On one of the pages on sold out software, it says you can download Patch 1.02 Beta for "SHOGUN: TOTAL WAR WARLORDS EDITION"
have any of you used this patch? I guess it helps the game?
once again main worry is whether the game will work, or work properly, as even on their page on the FAQ, it has stuff like: "I sometimes don't get sound during the throne room animation or during other animations in the game"
and more worryingly: "When I run the game in software mode, the camera moves *very* slowly and my framerate is poor when on the battlefield." ~:(
Don't worry about that stuff, see how it works for you, and if it doesn't let us know about it and we can have a good go at getting it working.
The Throne room can be turned off as can all of the other videos. The startup intro videos I think can be renamed to skip them.
What type of graphics card is in your system?

thanks
hopefully the videos could work anyway
my graphics card is a ATI Radeon X300SE
(running on Win XP Home SP2)
You may need to use older drivers, but try it first. If you already have MTW? And have it working with that card then you should be ok with Shogun as well. If that is the case then the only problem you're likely to encounter is the throne room bug.

wow
I came home expecting the game either not to work, or not to work properly, and to my big surprise it not only works, but nearly everything seems fine. It actually runs smoother than MTW / VI.
I bought Shogun Total War Gold Edition (reissued by Sold Out Software), only cost me £4.99 (cheapest TW game I've bought), includes The Mongol Invasion expansion.
Was the only copy I could find in Central London (had to travel after attending a conference this morning).
The only thing that sometimes happens is in the main title menu, where it can flick quickly and you see the trailer behind the mouse. But except for that, everything so far works fine. That includes the videos (which are very good), and the Throne Room. I take it the Throne Room is basically a place to get (general) tips?
I tested custom battles, historical campaign and full campaign and they all work.
(My graphics is Primary's Graphics, set on 1280 resolution).
I actually find (part) of the graphics better than MTW / VI. There is a lot more atmosphere in the battles mainly becuase the scenery looks 'better' and more varied, with some very high mountains and hills. But mainly becuase of the clouds and weather, I Love how that looks, it's beautiful. I prefer the trees, and def think the buildings look better.
As it's an older game, I can see some advantages that MTW / VI has, I think the main campaign has more depth in MTW, as you have the politics of the Pope (crusades, Jihad), and more emphasis on princesses? Although when I briefly played Shogun, I did place a lot of emphasis on Ninjas, and I think you can you use Geishas the same way?
3 big things that I quickly noticed not present in STW / MI, was no artillery, buildings can't be destroyed/damaged (?), and buildings can't defend (i.e arrow towers & gatehouses, in MTW) which means less variation in warfare. Also there's no replay unfortunately. And of course there is less types of units,
however that being said I read that STW is much more balanced the other TW games, and apparently the AI is tougher, in campaign mode I did notice they were more aggressive, trying to capture my provinces more so than in the other TW games.
I really like the exotic feel to the game, and the music, videos and throne room really add to this.
I read that some people have 1.02beta patch, as it was apparently released to help with a reinforcements issue. In one custom battle when defending, I actually managed to call in reinforcements, so it might actually be fine (and I didn't install the patch, also as people complained that the price of some units , buildings and their power changes if you do).
MTW / VI works fine, but less smooth than STW, as sometimes in battle, the screen will 'mildly blink' (very quickly), and often when panning the camera with many units on the field, it can be fairly slow, but except for that it's fine, and has not crashed. RTW (& BI, Alexander & EB) seems fine, it's mainly M2TW when there are many troops, when it really gets laggy.
I can see why they chose this era & Japan for their first TW game, as it really does fit the concept perfectly. Looking forward to playing more, and hopefully should remain fine.

The video may be flakey at times. The fact that you've got all the videos actually working is a good sign. I take it that you can click on the throne room advisor without it crashing?

Shogun definitely has much more atmosphere, better weather effects and better soundtrack than MTW or later TW games.

Personally I think the Papacy feature in only MTW complicates matters somewhat. It doesn't work as you expect and sometimes I think the game would be better off without it. I find that the Papacy can make many campaigns predictable from the outset because the Pope will always warn and eventually excommunicate those bigger catholic factions that are perceived to be picking on the smaller ones. The Pope doesn't look at wealth or army size, but simply the number of provinces. This can be a big problem for, for example, the HRE if they get into a war with the French. I think that Shogun's lack of this kind of feature and instead the inclusion of the Emperor's province works well and leaves more flexibility for the AI factions.
Crusades and Jihads are another feature I've never liked much in MTW. They are easily spammed by the player and can be topped up by extra units, but in the hands of the AI they usually fail causing a crippling influence drop for the owning faction's leader and quite possibly a civil war. With MTW I get bored with AI crusades coming my way as I know they'll fail miserably and will provide some cheap training for my units.
Geishas are one of the flaws in STW, some would say the biggest flaw. Geishas are basically to STW what Grand Inquisitors were to MTW - very overpowered assassins that can attempt the assassination again if they fail and can only be removed by either a successful Ninja assassination, or by targeting them with another Geisha. In short Geishas are a bit of a joke, and it's best to simply train one or two to take care of enemy Geishas just to nullify the problem and nothing more.
3 big things that I quickly noticed not present in STW / MI, was no artillery, buildings can't be destroyed/damaged (?), and buildings can't defend (i.e arrow towers & gatehouses, in MTW) which means less variation in warfare. Also there's no replay unfortunately. And of course there is less types of units,
Buildings can't be damaged and their are no siege weapons. The castles don't even have gates. The whole siege warfare thing was introduced in MTW. Personally I don't miss it as I enjoy the pitched battles more.
Less types of unit is not always a bad thing. I always found that Shogun had just enough units and no more. A glut of units that are basically the same as each other, but only differ cosmetically is pointless. Having units that become obsolete but are still available to train for no obvious reason is also a sign of weak game design. MTW had plenty of unit types that once you had the ability to train a better units, you would never train the inferior type again. MTW also had stacks of units that took a lot of teching up, were costly to train and support, but were worse stat wise than another cheaper unit that was available earlier (for example Armenian Heavy Cavalry vs Ghulam Cavalry).
however that being said I read that STW is much more balanced the other TW games, and apparently the AI is tougher, in campaign mode I did notice they were more aggressive, trying to capture my provinces more so than in the other TW games.
The AI is definitely more warlike, as the STW campaign depicts a civil war in progress and not the entire of medieval europe (as MTW tried to do). In terms of the battles themselves STW is more balanced than other TW games, but when it comes to the campaign I'd say it was no more or less balanced.
I can see why they chose this era & Japan for their first TW game, as it really does fit the concept perfectly. Looking forward to playing more, and hopefully should remain fine.
The sengoku jidai and Japan were indeed perfect for the TW engine, larger european theatres are not so suited.

There is a way to save STW replays and play them back, but it's a lot more involved that MTW, because you're doing things outside of the game shell. The process has been described here several times, so it's a matter of finding the posts. I'm at work right now. I'll have a quick look when I get home, and if I find them I'll post a link.
Essentially one replay file is saved after each battle. The next battle will overwrite it unless you move it and rename it. Of course, to view it later you have to move it back, and rename it back to the system-recognized name. The final oddity is you have to create another icon for starting STW and include a command line parameter that will tell STW it is going to be used to view a replay.
Here you go:
Recording battles
It is possible to vieuw record and playback battles you played, beneath is information how to do so:
- Go to your shogun main folder.
- Rightclick at 'shogun.exe' and leftclick on 'create shortcut'.
- Do the same once again.
- Rightclick on one shortcut, and leftclick on 'change name'.
- Name the first shortcut 'record'.
- Do the same once again with the other shortcut and call it 'playback'.
- Rightclick on the 'record' shortcut and leftclick on 'properties'.
- Leftclick in the 'target' box and move the cursor to the end of the text in the box.
- Add a space and 'ER'.
- Click 'Apply'.
- Rightclick on the 'playback' shortcut and leftclick on 'properties'.
- Leftclick in the 'target' box and move the cursor to the end of the text in the box.
- Add a space and 'mEP'.
- Click 'Apply'.
To record a battle you must run shogun from the 'record' shortcut, the saved battle will be in your 'dumplog' folder. But shogun only saves the last battle in that folder so to save the battle you must cut it and paste it into whichever other folder. To playback the battle which is in your dumplog folder at that moment, run shogun from the 'playback' shortcut. The file in your 'dumplog' folder must be called 'replay', the 'dumplog' folder is in your shogun main folder.
I'm not 100% sure it works, I never tried. But people posted this here somewhere some time ago. I think it'll work fine. If you don't get it to work.. Pm 'Sasaki Kojiro'. He has used it before. ~:)
good luck

thanks for the info,
good points brought up, and I've def. seen similar posts, similar to what Caravel says about why people see Shogun as the best of the series,
I personally prefer to deal with provinces next to each other in the same area, then lands far away separated by Sea, and so that can explain why Viking Invasion appeals to me more.
Once again (although I knew most likely it'd be the case as was with MTW), good to see the realism in weather with gunpowder units. Those troops can only fire if the weather is clear or light drizzle, but anything stronger than that and their missile capabilities are rendered useless and can only fight hand to hand combat. (slowmatches couldn't take much rain & wind, and it was always a problem if gunpowder was exposed to rain as it could become harder / impossible to fire).
This was never the case in M2:TW (I think), that the Handgonners, etc were able to fire in any weather condition, which was just plain unrealistic. So becuase of that (and mainly the atmosphere from the clouds with weather), STW/MI has my favourite 'atmosphere' of the TW series.
It's interesting as well, as except for MTW/VI (which I got a few months ago), the other games I've only bought in the last few weeks, so I am able to compare the different aspects of the games,
regarding the Throne Room & Videos, so far they work, so that's good.

Okay, hey guys, been reading the Forums for a while, also was registered a few years ago...I'm having some serious problems right now...
I have an old copy of Shogun TW, a copy with which i never had problems...Now a few days ago, i decided to install the game and play it, because i was really in the mood for it...So i install it, everything is fine, but when i open it, surprise, a blank screen appears and it stays like that...I try ALT+TAB, i try to push the Windows button and close the game...It gives me the Not Responding screen after which, my computer REBOOTS...
I know, akward, probably i didn't explain it very well either...But i tried many things, i tried the .mpg files thingy, the Compatibility thingy, i don't have that StarForce installed...And nothing works...:(
Got an AMD Athlon, 1.3+ Ghz, 512 RAM, Service Pack 2, NVIDIA GeForce 5200...
I don't want to format my PC, that's the final solution...But any ideas? I'll also try and buy a new version, but i don't understand why it won't work when it always worked on my PC...

If it crashes before the intro movie plays, it might be that. There's a way of disabling it which is probably mentioned in this thread - if it's the same as for MTW then all you have to do is to put a blank text file in the game directory and rename it skipcredits.txt

Spongie, it doesn't crash before the movie plays, it crashes before anything happens. Just a black screen appears and it stays like that, and when i try to close the game i get the "Not Responding" screen, i click "End Now" and in a few seconds my whole computer reboots...I'll see if i can solve it with the skipcredits.txt thing...

Have you upgraded your video driver? If so, that could be the problem. Check out this thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=66713). It's suggested that for MTW you should not be using anything newer than the 61.77 video driver (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.77.html) for the GeForce FX5200. STW is even older than that. Don't bother buying a new version of STW because the game was never updated beyond what you already have.
Hi all
managed to find this whilst trying to find some help. I reinstalled my old copy of shogun, and it works fine upto a point. Basically any game i start it gets to turn 3 or 4, autumn or einter and freezes when doing the AI's moves. but it works upto that point. Has anyone any ideas?? Any help much appreciated.
It sounds like you can play until the first pop-up message (Farming Results) - do you see the message advising of your funds for this year?
Hi, no i don't think so, pretty sure that didn't pop up.
Sounds odd.
You could try reinstalling incase it is a corrupt file?
I'd also try it with the sound off / a different video mode.
Yeah i'll reinstall it. i've also ordered a copy of warlord edition so when that arrives i'll try that as well. Thanks for the help. hopefully onces it up and running i can be on here a bit more regular.

I know I am doing a thread necro here...but...
I am running Shogun on my work Win XP SP2 machine AND my home Vista Ultimate box........how?
Using Microsoft Virtual PC (which is free).
What you need....
Windows 98 Disk...(or ISO, IMG, ect.....).......
Also having an IMG, ISO, or the actual Shogun disk's will help.
After that you can just google the instructions, but trust me, its easy.
What I did was make an ISO image of my Windows 98 disk then mount the image in Daemon Tools. Then I started up Virtual PC and went through the setup.
Then I installed Windows 98 normally on the virtual hard drive.....

Does STW run in Direct3D mode under Virtual PC or are you using software mode? I've thought about running it (and MTW) under Linux via VirtualBox but the fact that Direct3D probably won't work at all has always put me off even trying.

Me Need Helpy! :sweatdrop::yes:
Hi there!
You can try 'Minimum' install. (it probably won't install throne stuff then, so the problem would be gone- that is, if the throne room stuff really is the problem)
Keep in touch! ~:)
Try cleaning the disk, if that fails it might be that the disc is scratched so you'll need to get hold of another one.

I don't know the program but it sounds like something to give a try. ~:) I suddenly recalled reading about this when I read Cynewulf's post here.
I can hopefully help to resolve the flicker menu issue.
The flickering is generally caused by hardware acceleration available on recent video card.
To solve the issue right-click on the windows background:
- select "Properties" to show the dialogue box "Display Properties."
- select "Settings" tab and then click on "Advanced" button; this bring up another dialogue box.
- select "Troubleshoot" tab and slide the slider next to "Hardware acceleration" to None.
Hopefully this piece of advice will resolve the woes which beset me when I recently purchase
Shogun Total War - Gold Edition.
gannbatte-ne (good luck),
Omi-san.
Konban ha, Omi-san.
Thanks for the advice and welcome to the Org. One question: Does this modification have any drawbacks concerning other graphics applications (e.g. games, videos, normal pc usage...)?
I have tried that option in the past and in my experience it doesn't work. If you drag hardware acceleration to "none" the game will probably crash with a "Direct3D could not be initialised" error or something similar.
In response to patdj,
I guess that I can only comment from my experience - that this does resolve the issue and I did not notice any other issues with the game (in comparison to my older computer, which was a win95 install, and the reason I want to solve the annoying issue.)
I can only suggest you try it for yourself and see whether it works on your system.
If you have success or failure, then please share your experince as Asai Nagamasa has done.
Obviously, you will probably need to adjust this for playing other more modern games, for which hardware accelerators will probably be exploited/necessary.

Hi guys im a new member and have come to you with a problem :(
I played STW years ago and loved it, since i lost the game and here we are now i bought the game again on ebay and with a new laptop. I tried installing from disc and when ever i click "install game" from the sold out menu it just dosnt open anything. So what i tried to do was explore the disc and try running "ShogunW.exe" and it brings up 3 errors which i later tried to fix manually.
Cannot find "Weachatr.dll"
Cannot find "Wearsr.dll"
Cannot find "Weanewsr.dll"
So i copied all the disc contents to a temp folder on my desktop and downloaded the 3 missing DLLs into the same folder. Then "ShogunW.exe" does actually run, then brings up a new error "Please insert correct CD" when infact the original STW disc is still in the CD drive..
Im quite computer literate but this has got me stumped :( HELP?!!
You are trying to run the actual game .exe which won't work, because you haven't installed the game as yet.
Try running "setup.exe" instead, this should bypass the installer menu that "Sold Out Software" have probably put on the disc.
Ive tried that on the original disc and in the temp folder i created. I run it and nothing happens, although in task manager (processes) it is actually running in the background. I dont understand why or where the setup is getting stuck.. ?? Am i the only person to have this problem?? :(
If the setup is getting stuck it may be due to a problem with the windows installer service.
Go to start -> run and enter "cmd".
Enter the following command: "net start msiserver"
Post the output of this command here.
Try running the setup from the CDROM again.
https://img230.imageshack.us/img230/3977/screenyl.png
After this i tried running the setup from disc again and still same result. I also tried renaming the setup.exe file in the temp folder and no change. I installed the directX drivers also incase it was a graphics issue. Again im at a loose end :dizzy2:
This is odd indeed...
Try running the following from the command line:
net start "DCOM Server Process Launcher" (include the double quotes)
Post the output.
Try running setup.exe again.
If it still fails to run can you take this disc to another PC, run the setup program from there and see if it works?
Do other .msi setup programs install ok?
Ive followed your instructions and still not getting anything :(
https://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2227/screeny2.png
Tomorrow ill try and install on another system and hope for the best..
... and yes all other setup files work fine, this is the first time ive had this problem.
If it still fails to run can you take this disc to another PC, run the setup program from there and see if it works?
Try this next, if it doesn't work on another machine then you will know that it's your disc that has a problem. If so, then you will need to exchange it from where you bought it.

Hey everyone. I'm a new member trying to install STW WE on my swanky new PC. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. The installer runs, but the moment it starts copying files it throws an error. It says the video files can't be copied over. I've tried opening the video files from the disk, and they don't play properly. They won't even play properly if I copy them to the hard disk myself. I have tried the disk on my Win98SE machine and everything works, except for the fact that my old machine suffers from chronic random crashes, hence the new machine.
MTW works ok, but the resolution is stuck on naff. I might post about that elsewhere.
It's quite bizarre to have a new machine that will not run programs for previous versions of its OS.
Changing the compatibility settings does not help. Do I need a Win98SE emulator?
