This whole thing is looking crappier by the second.

First no money actually going to Afrika.. now things like this..

There isnt much that can be said about the LiveAid shows though, they always seemed badly planned to me.

well if they did their early catalogue they could prolly knock out 2 or 3 tunes. Careful with that axe Eugene and Arnold Layne would just about cover it. ~

Upset is not the word. Enraged is not the word. Furious is pretty close...

Either way, i want blood for this. In some ways, i'm glad i didn't win tickets. Pink Floyd and paul mccartney are the sole reasons i wanted to be at live 8. If i had received this news while at the gig (or worse, not recieved it at all), i would've broke down into tears.

Couldn't agree more. And while the set list isn't that bad (Breathe/Money/Wish you were here/Comfortably Numb), i would kill several times to see them play an "Any colour you like/Brain Damage/Eclipse" outro...

Apparently every artist only gets 15 minutes, although it is likely that some acts will overrun. I agree with ah dut and Cygnus X-1: fewer artists and longer performances. ~D

Does anyone think the way 'Fern Cotton' has been interviewing other bands while one is on stange is a tad disrespectful? I mean, the only one i can recall was when she interviewed Razorlight when REM were playing...

I was bleedin' enraged when that happened in the middle of man on the moon fer chrissakes, if it had been during everyone hurts i'd have laughed, but no, here's fern cotton and some flash-in-the-panners! for just long enough to wipe out the intro! GAH! - no, GAH doesn't cover it! .
It was like that in glastonbury coverage- gormless arsetalk while New Order are playing true faith....if they try that in the 'floyds set I'll hunt them down...

In case your wondering

Geldof also revealed that Pink Floyd, reunited with founder member Roger Waters for the first time in more than 20 years, will play three songs: Breathe, Comfortably Numb and Wish You Were Here.

Great set but how will they do full versions in 15 minutes? I guess it will be lose.

Also I cant believe I missed this.

SIR Paul McCartney and the Irish rock group U2, dressed in Sgt Pepper costumes, are due to open next weekend’s Live 8 concerts singing “It was 20 years ago today” — a reference to the Live Aid concert of 1985.

Does anyone know if theres anywhere to see anything that was missed. I heard something about them being streamed on the internet

Agreed, every song is a winner. I don't think the album really gets the praise it deserves as well, everyone always remembers and knows Dark side of the moon, but Wish you were here? It is often forgotten, and it is superb.

You want to see how close we all are under the skin get a copy of Paul Mc Cartney Live in Red Square. Seeing him sing Back in the USSR there is unbeliveable as is seeing all those Ruskies singaing along and dancing to all his songs. Truly remarkable. MUsic is a great uniter .

Paul McCartney "Live in Red Square" DVD, new Paul McCartney DVD released on June 14, 2005 (on A&E Home Video).

The Beatles Anthology may be the motherlode for fans of the Fabs, but among other Beatle-related video offerings, only The Concert for George matches Paul McCartney - "Live in Red Square" DVD for sheer emotional and musical impact. It's no coincidence that the latter two chronicle not just concerts but significant events--a memorial for Harrison (he had died a year earlier), and Sir Paul McCartney's first visit to the former Soviet Union.

For the Russian audience, Paul McCartney's appearance in Moscow is little short of a miracle. The Beatles were banned for decades by the Soviet government, which regarded their music as the epitome of Western decadence and propaganda, and the fans' only access to the group was through the occasional photo or black market album. Their reaction to his 2003 visit is a mixture of frenzy and rapture; in interview after interview, what one fan calls the Beatles' "gentle intervention" is credited with helping to bring down the whole Soviet system, simply because they represented a creativity and freedom that had been almost totally silenced. And that's all before Paul McCartney plays "Back in the U.S.S.R.," which inspires a response that simply must be seen and heard to be believed.

Elsewhere, Macca and his superb band perform a variety of Beatles tunes, along with some highlights from his solo career and stint with Wings. Considering the dozens of classics in the John Lennon-Paul McCartney catalogue, the majority of them never performed live by the group, he could hardly go wrong.

Still, the choices are almost unerring; along with "Hey Jude," "Yesterday," and "Let it Be" are some unexpected treats (including "Getting Better" and "She's Leaving Home" from the Sgt. Pepper album, as well as "Fool on the Hill," "I've Just Seen a Face," and "Two of Us"). And that's not all: additional footage from a show in St. Petersburg features "Drive My Car," "Helter Skelter," and a powerful medley of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" and "The End."
The sound and visuals are good, and the extra features (including a brief parallel history of the Beatles and the U.S.S.R. in the '60s) are interesting. No, the Beatles will never reform. But Paul McCartney - Live in Red Square ain't a bad substitute.

This DVD is a feature-length world premiere special that tells the story of the ex-Beatle's historic visit to Russia on May 24, 2003. Marking the first time that McCartney had set foot on Russian soil, this concert and documentary also reveals the secret love affair that existed between the Russian people and McCartney during the Communist era.

Paul McCartney "Live in Red Square" new DVD: ORDER IT NOW.

.

I got this as soon as it came out and its a real treat. It actually has 2 concerts and with different songs for the most part and the St Pete one maybe better than the Moscow one. If you like the Beatles this DVD is a must have.

I've never seen a less enthusiastic, less motionless crowd, ever. 200,000 people at Hyde park, and barely a head bob between them. The Who and Pink Floyd, ending a show mostly watched by youngsters. Forty minutes earlier, the entire place was going mental for Robbie Williams and his crowd pleasing antics, and now it's miserable. Paul McCartney has yet to return either. Sheesh. The Old boys network ending the show. They'll need to do some serious editing on the DVD to make it not look like the entire crowd was static for most of the show. Pink Floyd might be able to string together a fairly decent tune, but you want a real show stopper for the end acts, something that gets the entire crowd buzzing with endless enthusiasm. Pink Floyd certainly aren't that.

Steppe Merc
07-02-2005, 23:15
Frankly, you're nuts. The only real music are the old folks. Almost all new bands suck. And the crowd are the stupid ones, not the musicians. It's there fault for not liking good music, not the musicians.

The Who were was also cool and although i hate coldplay with a passion them and old richie ashcroft did well with BitterSweet Symphony.

Real music? Only the 'old folks' are real musicians? What kind of narrowminded nonsense is that? There's good music from all generations, depends if your ear is open to listening to it.

Anyway, I didn't see Beethoven and Mozart there, which is a shame, I'm sure they'd have gone down a storm.

Those modern acts like The Who and Pink Floyd are obviously RUBBISH in comparison to the old masters. ~D

Absolutely right, cutting to two idiots wh were talking about how historic it is to see Floyd reunited IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GUITAR SOLO

Well Im going to have to change my opinion on the hilight of the concert. Floyd was great but Sir Paul Mc Cartney brought down the house. Even with only one member represented the Beatles music still lives on and surpassed anything else there. His band must consider itself the luckiest musicians on the face of the earth. It's horses for courses, as far as I can see. No doubting those bands that ended the show can play, and if you like their stuff, hell you in where in for a treat - they really gave it some.

But it's disappointing to see a lack of enthusiasm from the audience, who obviously on the whole, get excited by other music, so perhaps weren't catered for in the best overall way. Another example is when Velvet Revolver (who I've never really been into or cared about), played an extremely energetic and rocking set, but received very little reaction from the audience, the entire event seemed flat. When you usually see large rock concerts and festivals, the crowd is electric throughout. Of course, not allowing booze might have been a factor, as well as the mix of people who came to the show (there for the event probably as much, if not more than just the music). I'm sure the event has been a great success anyway.

As far as being a coup Floyd was definetly it and they were great to see together again after all these years.Waters looked real happy to be there. But again theres something intangible about te Beatles music. After all these years its as freash as it was when it was written . And Again people tend to adore Mc Cartney . Pink Floyd was amazing. I think it had to do with the fact that I listened to it on the radio, without any annoying talking heads.
I only got to saw a stupid clip show of only a few decent clips: U2, Floyd, Who and Dave Matthews. McCartney was ok, but from what I saw of Hey Jude, it was disapointing.
Oh, and there was only one African, that I could tell in the preformances: Dave Matthews, who is from South Africa.

I wish Clapton, Bruce and some other regulars of this sort of thing had been able to come. I had hoped to see Neil Young, but I know he's very shy around the camera...

Pink Floyd was awsome! Best act in London, although Madonna was good too and Robbie Williams managed to make the security guards spaz out, so one up for him too.

Whilst flicking through them all I also got to see Beyonce or whoever discretely pulling down her stupidly short skirt at every opportunity. Someone didn't realise the cameramen were almost directly beneath her!

Pink Floyd live. Yay!

GAH! Velvet Revolver were totally awesome, the kicked the place roundly in the ass after that boring cow Joss 'I Can't Believe It's Not Soul Music' Stone, and the audience is stood around like they didn't even wanna be there! WTF? The best act by that point had been Paul McCartney and U2 right at the start, but VR blew them outta the water!

And then later The Who come on (Peter Kay was hilarious introducing them and doing the Amarillo singalong - "Hmm... What shall we sing?" ~D ) and do 'Who Are You' fantastically, and then 'Won't Get Fooled again' even better. Rock 'n' Rolling at 60 years old?! Too bloody right!

But it was Floyd's night. The audience didn't understand, but by god they were brilliant. Amazing. Superb. Add a thousand more superlatives, cuz they were just that great.

And the final singalong had even my ultra-cynical fmaily going "La-la, lalalalaaaa... lalalalaaaa..." - fantastic.

seems they were completely ignoring the Canadian show.

that is because the Canadian show, for the most part, was abysmally bad

worst i saw, was two French girls pretending to be African whilst banging on bongo drums and constantly letting out hideous fake yodels akin to Xena Warrior Princess

it was shamefully embarrassing. seriously. you are better off for having missed that crap! ~D

about the 15 minutes thing: on the Canadian show the interviewer was interviewing Deep Purple after their set (one of the few good acts Canada had) and he said to them: "sounds like the crowd is screaming loudly for an encore, are you guys up for it?" then the Deep Purple guy said: "they already took our gear down. and besides, this is not about us."

so it seems even the interviewers didn't know about the whole behind the scenes scam of only giving the good bands 15 minutes

those aforementioned bongo girls sure seemed to take a lot longer than 15 minutes though. it seems they were on for an endless, agonizing eternity. ~:grouphug:

I heard Neil Young playing Rockin in the Free World on Q 104.3 But they played all the Who songs, and all of Floyd, yet only one of Neil, and I think it was an ending sing along song, because the sound was off from too many extra mikes...
Did he play any other songs do you know Nav? I wonder if he alloyed them to video tape him... He didn't allow it at Woodstock, and numerous other things, but he has done Saterday Night Live, so mabye he did let them tape him...
I did get very sad at seeing Natalie Portman looking like a skin head... :embarassed:
Tribesman, I didn't know. I only got to see the (abysmal) clip show that focused on almost all popular people that I don't like. The American show looked horrible, with only Dave Matthews being decent from what I saw. But thanks for letting me know that at least some bands were from Africa.

I was one of the lucky few that actually attended live8 last night, with my sister whom had won the lottery ticket and decided to take me (luckily for me her boyfriend had dumped her a month previous, but enough of that ~D )

Anyyyyway, i was EXTREMELY disappointed when i found out we were not able to be right by the stage. My sister and i queued for 4 hours before they opened the doors just to get a good view, and then we find out about this "Golden Circle" where celebs, and a bunch of rich ponces like Paris bloody Hilton had paid £600 a ticket (So much for the NON commercial gain) so they could stand there and look bloody idle and pathetic for millions of people around the world. We managed to get as far as we were allowed, which was a fence just before the golden circle, just in front of the second speaker crane on the right hand side if your intrested.

At this point it was becoming pretty packed, and we could not move for the loo or refreshments, which my sister was a bit bothered about but i didn't care as all i wanted to do was see the great names on show. I thought the show was marvelous, and i enjoyed every performance, especially REM, Stereophonics, U2, robbie, and pink floyd. Unfortunately at the end we had to leave before the final few sets as the show was running tremendously late, and our train was leaving from London Bridge at 12:10. So we practically did a Linford Christie down Oxford Street, which considering we had stood up since 9am to 11pm and not sat down once or even had anything to eat (apart from a sweaty zinger burger from KFC), i think we did ok!!

All in all though, a great day! Very tiring but well worth the effort! Ill write more later if anyone wants to know more, but i've just got back home off the train and i some need serious R n R!

believe me, on this he is right

Sounds like a 'life event' there DW...

(I had 2 musically speaking...one was when I slept in Joe Strummers bed....(I did post it) and the other...(which strangley was before)..was when I saw the Sex Pistols. Buzzcocks and Slaughter and the Dogs at the Lesser Free Trade hall in 1976)

Trust me...times like this will live with you forever.

I'm not sure how that link fits with our piracy policy-I'll check with my superiors.

Edit-No, it's not I'm afraid. Still, I'm sure anyone who wants it can PM Cygnus.

The Band Aid format is to shove as many diverse bands through the media spotlight as possible to gain the widest audience possible, hence the estimated 8/10 (80% of the Earths population were aware of the event..to some degree) rating. If you want to see a Floyd gig youll just have to go an see a Floyd gig.

Personally Id a been happy if they played Seamus The Dawg.

There isn't any such thing, that's the point!

Agreed. But they at least played instruments, as opposed to Madonna or almost all of the American entertainers (since most weren't real musician or bands...)
