Well I just got the DVD of the Eagles 1st farwell tour and I must sayy im blown away. I was never a big Eagles fan sure they had some good songs but individualy their not very good but together their a good band. J/k folks. These guys can all stand alone and together their awsome to behold. This DVD has reopned my eyes to what a truly talented bunch of musicians they are. They now get my vote for the best old band still rockin. Yes even better than Mc Cartney as he is only one dude and yes better than the stones. You have to see you belong to the city man that guy wails on the sax and Walsh aint no slouch on the guitar either. Hell I forgot alot of the stuff on this thing. They also do many of their solo numbers here. Those of you who may have seen them film this in Australia sure are lucky. Im watching it for the third time as I post this. ~D

Does everyone agree or dont any of you like old rock bands. Certainly the Stones and Aerosmith and the Who give these guys a run. Id even throw in Chicago. Come on you must have some opinions.

Allman Brothers Band. They kick ass. Frankly, they are the best now since Duane died. They are insane, and way better since Dickey Betts got kicked out (as much as I liked him and his stuff). When I saw them, it was the best concert I've ever seen, and it was incredible.
Second would be Neil Young. He's not a band, but he's been going on since the 60s in different bands. His stuff in the 80s sucked, but his latest album Greendale was awesome, and Neil still kicks ass.
Those the Allmans and Neil have released recent, excellent albums. Sadly, most of the other bands even if they are still around aren't releasing any good stuff that I know of. Not that they're not good, but recent material obviously really helps.
edit: I saw the Eagle's concert. It was good, but Walsh was a mess, and that one stupid non instrument song that they recently wrote was horrible.
Oh, and I'd also have to throw out Bruce Springsteen as a guy who just released an incredible album.

Heh, I was wondering about that. I'd probably say no, unless they start to tour...
Oh, I got really excited when I heard on the radio Cream might come to Madison Square Garden if Ginger Baker can get past some legal troubles with mmigrations because of some pot or something....

Hey I have a dvd of Neil at the Jones Beach 1981. Its acoustic and mostly just him. Amazing one man show.My brother knows him through the lionel train thingy. He even wrote a jingle for one of their commercials and always talks to Neil at the train shows.
but Walsh was a mess
A mess ~ It gave me a whole new respect for the dude.I was thinking the slide lead on rocky mountain way may be the best of its type anywhere.I never realized he was that good. The thing with the Eagles is all of them can sing write and play a few instruments. The horn section was sensational. Theres a hell of a lot of talent there and that was one long concert. I mean they did almost everything you could as for and then came back with more.

Time to start calling my brothers in the city stagehands union I hope. Theres nothing like Cream. Greatest three piece rock band ever.

Well, I meant some of his wierder synthisizer stuff, and when he went conservative. ~;) At least that was the impression I got from his biography (an excelleNt book called Shakey), though he probably continued some good stuff, and he's usually good when he's solo from what I hear.

I'm going with the Eagles as well. Saw their farewell concert on t.v. Excellent stuff there.
Just think about it though, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, and Cream all at the Garden one night. Anyone say concert of the century?
Oh well, heres to dreams. ~

07-05-2005, 18:45
I'd actually prefer to see them seperatly, so they can play a long time. That way they can jam and play less well known stuff, instead of being squished for time.
Unless of course that conert was days long, and each of them got 3 hours to play, than that would be awesome. ~;)
And while I like the Eagles, I would prefer just Pink Floyd, Cream and Who. Unless it's a huge fesitival, then I'd want more bands...
But I wouldn't be complaining of course...

Yeah and the faces he makes when he plays. I couldnt believe it whe he sang though. Hes got a good voice and for a nut has written a lot of good stuff. Hes a muscian man. Their weird incase you havent noticed ~;)

Now that would have made a great live 8 concert. Maybe get CSNY to reunite as well and throw in Fleetwood Mac. The Stevie Nix and Don Henley could do leather and lace my favorite duet ever.
Oops how silly of me. You gota throw in the Stones, Aerosmith and Mc Cartney. Are the Kinks still together? If not get them off their a$$ and to the show as well. Maybe throw in some Chicago and Moody Blues as well. What a show.
Steppe Merc
07-05-2005, 19:11
I wouldn't hold my breath for CSNY, as Neil has a very love hate relationship with Stills. However, I agree, the bands you listed would be a far better thing than the groups that played at Live 8.
Bob Dylan, the Allman Brothers and the Dead would have to be added to round it all out, of course. ~;)

Simon and Garfunkel as well and maybe reunite Santana with the original members of his band that formed Journey throw in Steve Perry and Its a two for one.. Some of these bands could do three and four hour sets and still have material . Does Ian Anderson and Tull still play?
Steppe Merc
07-05-2005, 19:22
I think Jethro Tull is still together. Not sure how many are originals, though. And yeah, Santana's original band woudl be awesome...
And Simon and Garfunkel would be incredible.

Lets put together our own super concert. Give each group 2 , 3 or 4 hours their choice. Lets here who you like and what youd like them to play fo their set. Hey what about getting Page ,Plant and Jones back together there with Bonhams son as well. Man you could charge what ever price you wanted. It would be the greated musical event in history except maybe Woodstock. That was one hell of a show. Live 8 pales in comparison.
IrishMike

I would pay 1000 dollars for such a concert. And yes Led Zeppelin is a must, to bad Hendrix isn't around for it though. :embarassed:
Steppe Merc

OK. Here are bands/ people I'd have play in my ideal music event:
Allman Brothers Band
The Dead
Cream
Led Zeppelin reunited
Pink Floyd
Who
Bob Dylan
Neil Young and Crazy Horse
CSNY
Rolling Stones
McCartney
Santana (with a good backing band, preferably the original one...)
Eagles
Bruce Springsteen
The Band (even more impossible than Pink Floyd and CSNY, but...)
Simon and Garfunkel
I'd also have to have my favorite current bands, you know, to round it out:
Widespread Panic
Gov't Mule
My Morning Jacket
Dave Matthews Band
U2 (possibly)
White Stripes (if they focused on the songs that were more Classic Rock and Blues and Country (real country, not Nashville) inspired...)
edit: Drive by Truckers
Probably missing some, but it's a start.

can we pretend this is a couple of years ago so that I can nominate Johnny Cash?

Alright, i'd have a 12 hour show. 12 bands, 45 minutes a set. That gives each band good playing time + time to switch over. I'd also encorparate the 'revolving stage' idea demonstrated in live 8 in order to shave off some set up time.
The bands (in order of performance):
The Eagles
Black Sabbath
Boston
Bruce Springsteen
Dire Straits
Lynyrd Skynard
David Bowie
Led Zeppelin (With Jason Bonham)
Deep Purple (With the Mk2 line up. Not sure how many of them are still alive, though...)
Black Sabbath
Cream
Pink Floyd
Paul McCartney
If i have some spare time later, i may go into an individual set list for each band.
Steppe Merc

Gah, only 45 minutes each? That's nothing... an hour is too short, even 2 hours IMO.
Make it a couple of days long, that way, more bands and more people can come. ~;)
IrishMike

Lets have a 3 day concert, woodstock style. No special stuff, no outragious stunts. Just the pure rock music, and lots and lots of hard core fans.

You've got Black Sabbath twice. Not that I am complaining...

Led Zeppelin (With Jason Bonham)
They'd do well, but they dont play together hardly ever. The eagles were good, but I dont really like their music - except some of Walsh's stuff. The Stones lost it a long time ago IMO, as did the Who.
Cygnus X-1
07-06-2005, 23:12
as did the Who.
I disagree. Roger Daltrey's voice has faded a little, put Pete's guitar antics are even better. Admittedly, he doesn't smash the thing up anymore (which i'm actually glad to see!), but his lead work has a brand new depth.
And i was thinking we only had a day...
So now i'd make it 3 days a la woodstock. Oh, and the reason i had Sabbath twice was because i was copying/deleting stuff around (the bands are in order after all), and i guess i forgot to delete them. ~:joker:

I think the Who still got it. I thought they played very well at Live8. And Townsend can still play, and Daultrey's voice isn't bad, though of course not as great as it once was.
I am also glad that he no longer smashes his guitar, I just always found it annoying and a waste of money, especially once everyone copied him.

The Quo would have played them off the stage at Live 8. Every one of their songs sounds completely different.

Well i particularly dislike Pete Towshend for reasons other than his music, if you know what I mean - so my opinion might be a bit biased.

Oh, that. Don't know much about it, but I'm just interested in the music, in particular the stuff he made in the 60s and early to mid 70s.

Who? Who's the Quo? And who's songs sound different? I'm sorry, I have no idea what your saying...

the Quo are an English rock band.
they are generally known as "Status Quo".
I find their music a little samey for my tastes although it may just be the stuff that I've heard.
Although I've heard that their early stuff is pretty decent.

Well as being the self-proclaimed biggest The Who fan in the .org, I'll try to be unbiased on this. Pete did some bad stuff, thats true, and nobody can deny it. But if I listened to The Who, and other bands for that matter based on what they did in their own lives, I think I would have a very short list of bands to listen to. I mean the man can still rock out on a guitar, and anyone who deny's that he can't is crazy, or well just generally doesn't know what their talking about. Roger Daltrey's voice, as others have said before me, isn't the same as it was on Whos Next, but thats to be expected with age. I mean Gilmore and Water's voices weren't exactly up to par either on Live 8, but that doesn't mean they don't have it. Just that they have aged.
Steppe Merc
07-08-2005, 00:26
Yeah, really the only guy whose voice I think has gotten better is Greg Allman. His voice isn't as good as the early stuff, but he's a lot better than he was, plus he's kicked drinking and hard drugs.
Steppe Merc

Gah, forgot to put Drive by Truckers in my list of bands that I want to play in my multi day fest. They're a new band, but very Souther rock and Skynyrd like.

I don't care what Panzer says, the Stones still rock! Okay, so they may not be churning out albums like 'Exile' any more, but live they're better than they've been since the '70s.
EDIT - Sabbath are still rocking too, even if Bill Ward looks like a truck driver who's let himself go a little ~D

Aw man- when I saw this, I thought for sure you were talking about Floyd. Their Live 8 performance was amazing, considering their age. But noooo, it had to be the Eagles...
Seriously, no disrespect intended. I understand your devotion to the Eagles.
Speaking of the eagles, I think the time is right for a Big Lebowski quote:
"C'mon man, I had a long day, and I hate the F**kin eagles, man-"
"GET OUT! GET OUTTA MY MOTHA F**KIN CAB!"

Floyd DID rock at Live8. Maybe if we're real lucky they'll decide to give it one more go on the tour bus.
As for best rocker going for more than 30 years, I'd pick Bowie. He's still releasing an album every year or so, and they're pretty damn good. Plus, his concerts rock. I've seen him a few times in the last decade and they've all been good shows.
Full props to the Stones and McCartney. Have to check up on the Eagles recommendation.
Too bad Freddie Mercury dropped dead a decade ago. Queen stole the show at 'Live Aid', and they might still be playing today if he were alive.
As an aside, DEVO is coming to the 9:30 Club in DC next month. They're not exactly rockers, and they're not quite up to 30 years, but it might be worth checking out.
One last thing. Since we're in musical nostalgia mode, I'll pass along something I heard the other day that freaked me out a bit. This will only mean something if you've seen the TV show "Alias" (with Jennifer Garner). The guy who plays her straight-laced father on the show, Victor Garber, was the original Jesus in both the stage and movie versions of "Godspell". He had a huge orange 'fro and hippy face paint. Not what I expected.

My buddy said he heard on the radio that Floyd turned down $250,000,000 to tour the US.
