I decided I would stir the pot with this thread.
Which is more likely in your opinion:
Jesus is God.
Intelligent Alien life exists.
Neither. (explain please)
Both. (explain please)

Jesus, no more explanations...Everybody knows he exists...
As for Aliens, how can we explain the flying saucers on the night sky????

Was there a hebrew in Palestine approx. 2000 yrs ago who had some new and terrific ideas about how we should all get along and reprioritise our emotions but who unfortunately believed his own hype and aquired supernatural delusions of grandeur?....probably
Aliens visiting our planet?....definately not (as old belief systems die,new ones pop up)
Intelligent alien life somewhere?....statistically,yes
Cheers, :barrel:

Gah! who cares!?!
This sort of thing seems to demonstrate perfectly why one should always include Gah!

So many strange polls...

Not even all paths of christianity say 'Jesus IS God', I'm voting aliens
Well, Jesus probably existed, and statistically it seems certain aliens exist somewhere in the countless trillions upon trillions of galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars in them, so I give them both a tick.
I don't think either are/were god though.

Is Jesus God? That is a tough questions. In fact I do not have much expirience with Gods.
Intelligent Aliens? From my expirience here on Earth it is very unlikely that there is or will be intelligent life somewhere!

Jesus is not God. That is not a common belief. He was the child of God and his physical embodiment on Earth, in addition to being our saviour and greatest teacher. If you don't want to believe that you can believe Jesus was a regular person who taught a brilliant moral code that has lasted two millenia and who died for his beliefs.
Therefore I ticked Alien life exists. How can Alien life not exist was such a vast Universe of so many galaxies and stars. It is too much to assume that the same conditions necessary to create life on Earth could not exist elsewhere or that life could not have adapted differently to cope with a different environment. Whether Alien life has ever visited or passed by Earth is open for debate and there is no conclusive evidence that this is so, nor should there be any reasons for Aliens to visit Earth. The intellorance and hatred inherent in the human race that is expressed to those who differ from ourselves purely by the colour of our skin or our beliefs, would surely by a deterent to any contact from a completely different intelligent species.
If the statement had been Jesus was real, I would have ticked both.
'Gah!' is very likely since I always vote it.
Sorry for this pointless post, but it's such a pointless poll.

I noticed that some can be very offended by comparisons of this sort. I thought I was being daring. I guess my 300 posts compared with the thousands I see here are indicative of my perpetual newb status. Sorry it was not spicy enough for the backroom. I'll work on being more offensive.

Yeah, the next poll should be...
"Jesus was evil"
"Jesus never existed"
"Any one who thinks he was real has plans for taking over the world"
"Jesus sux0rz"
~;)

Yes, they can.
Though I was more, like, mind-numbed than offended… As in, “omg, here we go again, this never ends, does it?” ~D
I thought I was being daring.
IIRC, I thought you said somewhere to be a marine... :stunned: And this was "daring"!?! Work on it, private! :army:
Naaah, this thread is just plain annoying… Like the dozens and dozens of identical/similar threads this one follows to the great Oliphant graveyard called Backroom I used to police once. ~D

Uh, no.
Actually, some of the senior members around here at the .Org with join dates long before me don’t have much more posts than you. Huh, excuse me? What senior members? Oh, right, they are not around anymore… I wonder what chased them off, crappy R:TW or crappy topics at the .Org… Or both?
Sorry it was not spicy enough for the backroom. I'll work on being more offensive.
A-ha!!! Now you GO GIRL!!! :jumping:
"I'll be more offensive next time"!?! :laugh4:
Well, how about you next time create a good topic based on intellectual higher ground? Now, that is daring. Backroom is now *weeping bitterly* full of suxz0r w000ters; they spam, troll, offend other patrons and staff and they really dig themselves. And each other.
What would be daring is an attempt to create a topic that will sprout more than spam. A topic that will bring out the best out of people, where they will try to make a point rather than spam, argument rather than offend, and listen rather than shout.
No, spamming, being offensive, that is not the sign of non-n00bism, exactly the opposite.
People like Pindar-sama, Hurin_Rules, AdrianII, Gawain of Orkeny, now they post good stuff, make decent topics, and even if you don’t agree with them, you are in for fun and, even more, knowledge. If you want to learn from veterans of the Backroom, learn from them. ~;)

Discussions on religion and extraterrerstrial life have the potential to provoke thought and stimulate excellent conversation. Educated minds have long pondered the answers to these questions and no one can be certain of the truth. Of course, they also have the potential to simply stir the imagination.
The intent is not to offend, although these topics may be offensive. That is why they belong in the backroom. Instead of backroom, should this be labeled "politics only"? Or have I missed the purpose of this part of the forum?
I have quite enjoyed this part of the Org and am glad to have discovered it.

Now to get back on topic, there seems to be as little credible evidence for Jesus being God, or the son of God, as there is credible evidence on UFOs.
It seems that every time a point in the bible is discredited, thumpers will say that point was intended to be metaphorical or symbolic. However, these same points do not ring true throughout the book as they point to "miracles" or other magic.
Did Jesus exist? Sure. Some doubt this, but It seems there is plenty of evidence to support this. But did he raise the dead and come back to life and such and such? No. I am not personally buying it. However, I am not so arrogant as to claim that I and my contemporaries know the truth whilst others do not. That is the nature of so many religions: To claim absolute monopoly over their interpretation of worship.
As for Aliens, I find the potential for the existence of extraterrestrial intelligent life to be far more likely. Can anyone claim absolute truth on this one way or the other? Of course not. The point was to create a discussion where the the similarities and differences betwwen the two concepts could be analyzed and compared. In some ways, the existence of one as a truth could negate the other as a truth. If "Aliens" exist, then did Jesus die for their sins as well?

Jesus is not God. That is not a common belief.
actually this is a very common belief. Jesus is part of the trinity, meaning is god's son, but he is also god himself.
I think saint patrick explained it best. The trinity is like a three leaf clover. The three leaves are seperate, but together they make the whole plant. Therfore, there is God the Father, God the son, and the Holy Spirit/Ghost. Therefore, as a standard christian belief one could say Jesus is God.

I liked this description: God is like a bucket of water and Jesus is merrely a drop. Either way it is still the same substance. Thus, Jesus is God.
Of course I think it is Baloney also. And I used to be a Christian. Reborn and then not.
The whole concept is self defeating. If there is a heaven and hell, then our sole purpose should be to try to get to Heaven. Period. No computers. No fun and games. Just be perfect all the time.
Even worse, the human race would die if Jesus really was God. Why? Consider this: If you love your children, would you even RISK them going to Hell? Even like a million to one chance? Therefore you should love them enough to never have them and expose them to that risk. No more children means no more people going to hell. I would rather see the extermination of the human race than one decent person (who doesn't "believe" or accept that Jesus is God) go to hell.
Thus, the whole concept of salvation is self-defeating.
And what's more, what did Jesus sacrifice? His body? Obviously not his soul if he rose again. He can just get another body. I mean is there anything God can't do? God could have a million bodies! Damn, he could come down and hang out every thursday night and watch Baywatch if he wanted and then go back. He IS God afterall. Point being, what did he "sacrifice"?
I was a born again and cried over Jesus and all that. Then I thought about the whole concept and it occurred to me how ludicrous the whole thing was.
But no offense to anyone here. I could be wrong. As I have said, I am not so arrogant as to believe that everyone else is wrong and that I, the mighty Divinus Arma, am the only one with answers.

Jesus isn't God, according to the Catholic Church, God is Jesus's dad.
Jesus isn't God, according to the Catholic Church, God is Jesus's dad.
Their doctrine states that Jesus, God and the Holy Ghost are 3 beings in one. So, Jesus is both the Son of God in his earthly form, and God himself.

Careful, I just might finish up my schooling and get the lieutenant rank just to mop you up, non-com! ~D  I was also a marine, packing the MG42, the equivalent of US M-60, so my ass is not that easy to whop…unless you are girl, than you can pawn me in a second. Just smile and wiggle. ~D

Yes, but certain topic titles draw spam vultures faster than the others, not to mention the form and content of the initial post. And where you get one spammer, you’ll get them all. More intellectually demanding topics scare away the spammers, though. Steep up the curve.

Politics, religion, heavy weight and highly volatile topics go to Backroom. You haven’t mistaken the forum.
