Although I find it a bit disturbing that some of our patrons here seem to be more happy about the fact that Paris did not get it than about that London did get it

Unfortunately that is pretty much my only reason. France has driven me into such a spiral of dispair over the past few months that I have found myself disliking their Government to such a degree that I care about who hosts the Olympic Games in 7 years time.

I would actually rather London didn't host the Olympic Gmes because I believe it will decrease England's chances of hosting the Football World Cup for some time, it will be expensive and I'm not a huge fan of athletics. However, a victory over France is most welcome at the moment to put them back in their place.

Congrats! I was hoping for NY or long shot Moscow, but I'll admit it. My schadenfreude for Chirac's failures is making me a happy prole.

My comment above was purely from the french boo'ing everytime London was mentioned in the presentations today, which i find rather pathetic and irritating.

Otherwise im delighted London has won, as im a huge fan of athletics and this will give our grass roots in athletics a HUGE boost in funds, which has been needed for too long.

Now, that is a good reason - and I am sure that London will give the world some fantastic Games ~:)

EDIT:

I'm not sure if this will necessarily be the case. Now that the FIFA decided on a rota for the Worldcup England's next chance will probably be for 2022, 10 years after the Olympics. Considering that Spain, Italy and France had the Worldcup in recent years and Germany is going to host it next year, I would say that England has pretty decent chances to get the Worldcup when Europe gets it's next turn.

If Athens can do it then I'm sure London can. I remain concerned though, they'd better do a good job.

On a similar note to everyone else, I'd rather see the soccer world cup than the olympics.

Wohooo! I am so pleased we got it! I wouldn't have really minded if Paris won, but London winning means GREAT improvements to one of the poorest areas not only in London but the whole UK. The east end has been underfunded and been run down for a very long time now, now we have a chance to get the proper funding and redevelopment needed for the area to thrive. It is great. So, so pleased.

We won the Euro, and hosted the Olympics! :happy2: I was in Athens those days! Everything was cool! ~ Going around in the empty streets, lounging in cafeterias, getting together with foreign tourist from all over the world...

But the good days have gone! The games costed us 7-10 billion euros! :shocked2: Our deficit rise to 6.7% NGP!! The EU is threating the greek goverment, that it will take measures!
*you must pay!*
:deal:
I don't know if the Games were worthwhile!

Regardless, congrats London!!! :balloon2:

A bit disturbing maybe and I'm sure it's not directed against all French but let's face it Chirac hasn't been helping relations lately. But what do I know, I'm Scottish.

What with the obsession with Africa at the moment, I'm surprised they didn't give it to some African nation(s) to host it (although S.Africa has the world cup in 2010). Perhaps Saintly Bob Geldof can promote their cause for the next one. He could do a sponsered walk across the world with his network of old friends: Bono, The Who, Macca and so forth and make it a global thing broadcast 24/7. He'd have to stop and hold a starving African child in front of the cameras every couple of miles though, just in case people lose interest in the cause.

But anyway, good old London.

And unlucky to the French. Nice to know you have friends, but not as many as Britain. ~D

Bad idea. Few african nations could affort the cost of building the facilities, never mind the up keep of them.

And congradulations London, for what it's worth.

It's a fantastic idea. Construction costs wouldn't worry our Bob, he'd campaign for the G8 nations to pitch in, seeing as they've responsible for everything apparently. And think of the rejuvenation it will bring to the region and monies. Clean water for the swimming events might be a bit tricky to obtain though, but I'm sure everything else would be fine. So here's to Bob Geldof and his African Olympics.

Yeah just to confirm. I don't hate the French. I hate Chirac and anyone who agrees with him. I can appreciate that they had to vote for him because the alternative was so dreadful (makes the Conservative party look like an inspired opposition), but come on, the guy is a total prat. Why can France not seem to get rid of its leaders, they're like duracell batteries, they just go on and on and on and on....

At the moment, Chirac is probably more hated amongst Brits than Bush, which when you think about it can't be good.

You should have seen the playgrounds where I grew up then. More carnage and blood spilled there than on the fields of the Somme.

Well, maybe not quite that much. The occasional pint of the red stuff and a few black eyes, that type of thing.

07-07-2005, 01:45
you know, maybe Chirac is being sneaky, maybe he deliberately sabotaged the Paris bid so that the French economy would avoid any potential negative financial fallout like Greece incurred (because of the Athens games).
Maybe he hopes that the London games'll be hugely expensive and generally be a nuisance due to the financial aspects.

Or maybe he's just lost the plot.

Yes! Bad food and warm beer! Nah, just kidding. I think it is great so many people from England are so happy. If it was going to be in NY, I don't know if I would have cared. Too far away from me (and anywhere I want to live) for it to matter any.

Actually, with all due respect to the Brits, I feel bad that France didn't get it. I thought this would be just the thing to give the French a boost to their pride and perhaps get them out of this 'us against the world' mentality they've been in lately. Oh well, I mean c'est la vie. You guys did get the Winter Olympics in 1992, and the World Cup in 1998.

Congrats to the UK and London!
I lived in Stratford for two years and Leytonstone (very nearby) for a year before that and the area definitely needs some regeneration and a bit of local pride. I'm not sure where they are going to move all the pikies that live on the area being developed or where the knocked-off goods market is going to move as it currently runs in the Greyhound stadium that they are redeveloping into the main stadium.
I have to say that I am pleased to cock-a-snoop at Chirac, and in some ways at Parisiens - but it is less about beating the French in general and more about exhibiting pride in Britain as that seems to be lacking these days.

Look forward to the Rugby in France.

Bare in mind that this will be 7 years down the line. As much as i hate to say this about people who've lost their lives, most probably won't give today's events (and the terrorism that came with it) a passing thought.

i was hoping madrid would win it, and then i was hoping for paris, london, moscow and lastly and leastly new york, i think the olympics should take a century break from the usa, since they have had heaps of the ollies in the last century.
thanks,
