Noticed while looking through folders for the units stats,it says Phantoms?what unit is this as ive found ninja's and all the other units?
We still got no answer for that http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
If you look closer you will notice the 'phantom' has identical stats as the original Yari Ashigaru.

That means there's still room for baseless speculation though! heh, maybe they were early experiments on the excluded idea that shinobi could infiltrate armies and turn them against their own clan.. or maybe they needed a stat for some weird hardcode reason to represent dead bodies... eh? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Not absolutely certain, but I think Phantoms may have been incorporated simply for their texture space. They're not a unit at all, but I think the battlemap guys may have mentioned using them to paint dead men and horses ( noticed how all the units look alike when they're lying down? ).
There are comments all over the code saying "DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE OR REPLACE THE PHANTOM UNITS!!!!!!" and I think this was the reason why. Mind you, it was over 2 years ago when I was told the reason, so I might be wrong. I've stopped asking questions now and just do as I'm told. But I'll find out for definate for you guys, cos it seems to be on your minds.

Well, it looks like I was wrong, which seems to be becoming a habit this week. Everything I've written above is complete rubbish. Talked with the battlemap guys, and it turns out phantoms are a placeholder unit that keeps the unit types in sync with those of the strategy map.
It's a makeweight, and the only reason it's still in there is that it's far less hassle to simply ignore it than remove it completely.
Before you ask, no it's not an extra unit that could be adjusted and made into a moddable unit. The unit shell is still in the code, but the data needed to use it doesn't exist for phantoms ( there are some things still hardcoded in the game for the other units which isn't available for external modding, because it was too tricky to extract it into external files it).
