Kurk Hammet is my favorite guitarist, but I'd have to say Joe Satriani or Steve Vai are probably by far the most skilled.

Me, in a very unique way. Obviously.

If you mean in real life and with talent to actually make good music, I guess Page...

For nostalgic reasons I go for Brian May ~:)

For me, Jimmy Page comes in at first followed closely by Hendrix. None of the others come even close to those two. :guitarist:

You left out a biiggie and the mentor of Steve Vai and many others

The one and only FRANK ZAPPA.

Dave Gilmour is my favourite guitarist out of those mentioned, with Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton tying for close second. I think Hendrix and Eddie VH are probably the most important, though.

Although I dislike his music, Steve Vai is technically the best.

Joe Sat and Yngwe Malmsteen are close runners up...

Of course, these guys are all glam dinosaurs now, which doesn't say much for the solo guitar scene in the world today, haha...

Gawain of Orkeny
07-15-2005, 01:16
All those guys are also more of a jazz fussion type than they are rock. But they are the best.

Where the Hell is Jerry Garcia?
Not that I think he's the best, but he's way better than Van Halen, or those sort of jokers.
Best is probably Hendrix, followed by Clapton and Page, then Duane and Jerry followed by Keith Richards and Gilmour.

i voted other because Jack White is the best guitarist of all-time

Joe Sat and Yngwe Malmsteen are close runners up..

hmm, i would have inverted that (sat, yngwe, vai) but i'm not especially informed on the matter..

anyway, my fav guitarists up there would be gilmour, santana, and hendrix, probably in that order.

zappa and fripp should definitely be up there too. probably the two most skilled (overall) guitarists ever to live. though maybe it's hard to consider either of them "rock" guitarists.

I like Jack White, but I don't think that he is the best. Though he is varied, a bit too much, IMO. He shouldn't do as much grunge sort of stuff... I like his new stuff a lot, though.

Ernest Ranglin. He's more Jazz, but he can play it all.

John Kpiaye (http://www.lkjrecords.com/johnkpiaye.htm) too.

The guy sucks wind. I went to see the dead doing a hit of acid and one of his solos put me to sleep LOL.

Hendrix, with Page a nice second.

Hendrix is technically excellent, but he can also play a note at exactly the right time in exactly the right way. You have singer that people say 'can read the phone book' and still be good, i think Hendrix could just play scales and still be worth listening to.

For nostalgic reasons I go for Chuck Berry. :guitarist:
Then I choose Mark Knopfler and Jimi Hendrix at 2nd :guitarist: :afro:

Ah, man, how could you say that? The Grateful Dead are awesome! Sure some of their jams are long, but he's way better than Van Halen or Slash or Angus Young or Steve Vai, or those sorts of people.

Gawain of Orkeny
07-15-2005, 16:22
Ah, man, how could you say that?

Easy hes boring as hell and doesnt do one thing on the guitar that impresses me. How you can even mention him with these people is beyond me. He may be good for putting you to sleep but that about it.

I want to know how 5 people think Hendrix is better than Page.. :furious3:

Gawain of Orkeny

Easy Page isnt fit to carry Hendrixs guitar case ~D Page is good but far from the best ever. IN fact hes only the third best guitarist to play with the Yardbirds. Or you could say hes the worst guitarst to play with the Yardbirds ~D

Steppe Merc
07-15-2005, 18:22
I like Page more than Beck. Besides, he was originally going to replace Clapton, but he turned it down and suggested Beck. Then aparently he changed his mind and became their bass played. But by the time he was lead guitarist, the Yardbirds were a joke anyway.

And I still don't understand how anyone could dislike Jerry.

I can't distinguish which parts the different Skynyrd guitarists play (except for Freebird). To me they're more of a team package.

PanzerJaeger
07-15-2005, 20:22
Yep, thats why I didnt put them up there, or the ZZ Top guys.

Gawain - youve frustrated me greatly. :wall:

Not only are you now putting Hendrix above Page, but Clapton and Beck?? Ahhh..

I know it's cliche, but it has to be Hendrix.

I resent Keith Richards being on there, Panzer, since he is by trade a rhythm guitarist. He's also the greatest rhythm guitarist ever. The rest (IIFC) are lead guitarists. Doesn't matter, since it only says 'Rock Guitarist' in the title, but it just seems a little unfair to stick the guy in there when he's always been second fiddle guitarist, either to Brian Jones, Mick Taylor (he could be up there instead, actually - the guy's a wizard) or Ronnie Wood.

Great rhythm guitarists include:

Keef (duh, the Rolling Stones)
Izzy Stradlin' (Guns N' Roses)
Malcolm Young (AC/DC)
Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden)
Brad Whitford (Aerosmith)

No way Towsend beats him hands down. He plays lead and rythm at the sametime ~D

Yeah, Gawain's right. Pete is the man. He's a better songwriter too.

No one can play a chord like Pete.

I prefer Richards.
