I heard a good joke the other day...

What does a Grateful Dead (Dead Head) say after he leaves rehab?

Man, this music sucks!!!

Anyway that's my pick for worse band ever, what's yours?

I'm offended by that joke, Dave, and you too Gawain. :furious3:

~;)

Um, well going with what Sharrukin says, since rap isn't music as well as pop, I'd have to go with... well... I can't think of any, I try and avoid bad bands.
I'll come back when I think of some.

Well that's true.

What about Prince?

Prince (A.K.A The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, who is now apparently The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince) isn't a band, so I guess I can't pick him. What about Prince and the Revolution? Does that qualify?

If I can't go with 'Whatever The Hell His Name Is', it would be in order, Musical Youth, Backstreet Boys, Simple Plan.

Im going to go out on a limb here and say Van Halen.

Sure a lot of bands were technically worse than them, but few were able to come out with horrible song after horrible song and build such a devoted fan base on such crappy music. These facts mean that Van Halen is played a lot on my favorite radio stations(classic rock ones), which really irritates me.

If not the worst band ever, the worst established band ever. In my opinion, of course.

I think that's a bit unjustified. Although their later output is very poppy, Van Halen's self-titled debut is a great album, and the first real milestone in the development of electric guitar since Are You Experienced?

I'd have to agree. I can't stand Van Halen. I'd also have to add KISS (I wanted to shoot myself when I saw them with Aerosmith, it like a damn circus, not about the music), Linkin Park, Limp Biscuit, Sex Pistols, and all 80s hair metal bands, as well as others.

Oh, and I'm not including the Backstreet boys or any of them, because they don't play instruments, and they don't really sing. Thus, not a real band.

Let's see how all you rock fans feel about this article link

Either the guy has a problem with classic rock, or the guy has a problem with drugs. I seem to think its the latter, as this was far from the only quote about bands and drugs I saw..

Second, they paved the way for the marriage between music and drugs which to this day has ruined rock 'n' roll.

Now I voted for Bush, so naturally im not a big fan of druggies or the drug culture( ~;) ), but if you discount all musicians who use(d) drugs as bad - then your not really judging the music, but the musicians.

Also, he says in the opening that he will give real reasons for why the bands are bad - but he doesnt.. ~:)

The 80s ruined rock and roll in my opinion.

Steppe Merc
07-16-2005, 21:23
It started in the mid 70s, with disco and some of the more sellout bands (REO Speedwagon, etc.), and punk but the 80s killed it. Only Stevie Ray Vaughn was good then...

And I can't think of one band that I like that never used drugs. So it's quite silly to blame any one band for introducing drugs. Besides, IMO, only cocaine and herion are bad for the music. Oh and booze too (though it's ok as long as they aren't drunk while playing, which most of them were, or if it's not to execess, which it often is).
Pot and LSD helped a lot of bands with better music (Beatles in particular).

Bruce Springsteen. Man he sucks.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there Gawain. Bruce is great, and his seventies output, from The Wild, the Innocent..., to Darkness on the Edge of Town is excellent, although I'm not so keen on most of his stuff after that. Born To Run, in particular, is a truly majestic record.

I do if he influenced it. Many a serious musical scholar compares the Beatles to composers such as Beethoven. Do you have any training in music or play an instrument? Sure dosent sound that way. They did things no one ever tried before an expanded the scope of rock as no one before or since. They helped bring down the USSR and were really the start of giving power to the young. They changed the world .No other group can come close to making such a claim.

yes...i do play an instrument......do i break some sort of secret commandment because i call something dull and boring if i find it so?

as far as being an influence...so what?....you can be influenced by something and still blow it out of the water yourself...

there have been many bands after the beatles that have done just so....blow them out of the water completelly......i could stand here all night stating bands that were so much better than them...the police is a good example.....5 albums...all class, no filler...there´s maybe 1 bad song in there...

..this almost "sainthood" that they are given in the music business is bs.....like i said....my dislike for them is greatly due to the force used to force them as being the greatest band ever...

help bring down the ussr?.....giving power to the youth?......silly me...i tough that political and economic pressure and higher education standards were responsible for those 2.....this is music here...it´s important...but let´s not make it more important than it is...

Gah! The Beatles are awesome! They are the best band ever! :furious3:
They changed Rock and Roll, and made it awesome. Without them Dylan never would have went electric, and the Stones and countless others would never have made it big. Their later stuff is just incredible. I mean the White Album is just awesome, as is Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper's, Revolver, so many other incredible albums.

Bruce Springsteen. Man he sucks.
No way. Bruce is good. Not the best, but as BKS said, his early stuff is quite good.

yes they would have made it.....rock and roll comes from the blues....that´s the main influence...mainly in the guitar style of the music...

i´m pretty sure that a bunch of british boys with lame haircuts can´t claim responsability with the real source of rock and roll that is the blues........or do they claim responsability for that too? ~ ~D

Steppe Merc
07-17-2005, 01:44
Yes, the blues still would have existed, and that is the main source of rock. However, it would never have made it to the white audience without them. Sure Elvis helped a bit, but without the Beatles, would the Yardbirds and the Stones still have been signed, or countless of other bands? Would anyone listen to the Yardbirds and the Stones, besides a few people? Once peope heard the Beatles, they branched out into other bands, but without the Beatles, would those people have ever listened to those bands? Or would the bands have ever even made it big, or even existed? IMO, I don't think so.

A cheap holiday in other people's misery!

I don't want a holiday in the sun,
I wanna go to the new Belsen,
I wanna see some history,
Cuz now I got a reasonable economy!

Now I got a reason, now I got a reason,
Now I got a reason an' I'm still waiting,
Now I got a reason,
Now I got a reason to be waiting,

THE BERLIN WALL!

Class. Never Mind The Bollocks is a great record, no matter what you guys say. Stop the hate, people, classic rock and punk can live side by side. I love Zeppelin, the Stones, the Doors, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and Pink Floyd as well as the Pistols, the Ramones and the Clash.

As to those who say Van Halen suck; listen to their early stuff, or even Hot for Teacher and Jump - they rock! Okay, so it's not the Doors - you're not likely to be intellectually stretched and challenged by it - but for blowing off steam and having a bit of fun, they can't be beaten.

Virtually anything that passes for heavy metal these days (Slipknot, System of a Down, any of that Scandinavian rubbish) is crap. And while punk is good, its spinoffs (hardcore and thrash metal) suck the big one.

Beatles helped bring down communism in Russia'

The Beatles helped bring about the downfall of Soviet Communism, according to a documentary to be screened in the United States.

The two-hour film, entitled The Beatles Revolution, explores the phenomenon of the Fab Four, featuring interviews with President Bill Clinton, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and Salman Rushdie.

Milos Forman, director of Academy Award winning One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest said: "It sounds ridiculous but I'm convinced The Beatles are partly responsible for the fall of Communism."

His claim is backed up by Dr Yury Pelyoshonok, a Canadian based Doctor of Soviet Studies, who grew up in the former USSR in the 1960s.

"The Beatles had this tremendous impact on Soviet kids. The Soviet authorities thought of The Beatles as a secret Cold War weapon," he said.

"The kids lost their interest in all Soviet unshakable dogmas and ideals, and stopped thinking of an English speaking person as the enemy.

"That's when the Communists lost two generations of young people ideologically, totally lost. That was an incredible impact."

Rolling Stone Keith Richards suggests that the music of the 1960s played a big part in bringing about the end of Communism.

"After those billions of dollars, what brought it down? Blue jeans and rock 'n' roll."

At this stage there are no plans to screen the ABC documentary in the UK.

The Beatles are the Rosetta Stone upon which the entire language of contempory modern music is based and translated. To not understand and appreciate the Beatles, at least in passing, is to not understand music in the post-Elvis era. I pity and sometimes even distrust anyone that just doesn't understand what makes them so special.

Who cares if they helped bring down Communism or impacted music for years to come? They still suck.

Although they probably aren't the worst band ever.

That's true about the USSR and communism. My dad loved the Beatles and he was pretty ideological about communism as well. But he loved the beatles. ~D

I don't see how their music sucked. Their tunes are pretty catchy and much better then most bands ever. I wouldn't say they are the best, but that's all subjective. Everyone likes different things.

back to the Sex Pistols....

I have to agree that they suck. They are so... annoying and angry. The songs have no... life. They helped to ruin good music.

Well, the whole point of Punk was that it was angry. Maybe you have to be British but stuff like "God save the Queen" (she ain't no human being) is pure working class genius. No LIFE ???? Anarchy for the UK has no life? "I wanna destroy, kill the Queen..." Its nihilist but its bursting with life. Plus of course dying young is the classic rock career move.

Lets knock the whole "they can't play their instruments" thing on the head too. True enough the pistols in particular were musically challenged. But listen to the record and tell me if it matters? That was part of the whole thing, taking music back to the people (man). Even the ones who could only play 3 chords.

(BTW fellow UK 30 somethings, you do realise than when we are in our sixties the pensioners tea dances in Eastbourne will be playing "London calling" and "Eton Rifles" rather than Glen Miller, and we will be smashing up the place with our zimmerframes? of course by then I will have no hair so I suppose I'll have to go skinhead.

I pity our kids though, when their time comes they will be mumbling along to Eminem. One of the weirdest things I ever saw was him headlining at Reading. Normally, the Reading headliners are hardcore rock bands like the Red Hot Chilli peppers or Metalica, and the crowd is a wild and frankly dangerous frenzy of moshing and bellowing along. This time everyone stood still and mumbled along to the words. 100,000 people mumbling in a field. What a load of RUBBISH.)

Anyway, back on topic, here's another all time terrible band: Genesis. Why, for the love of pete?

I would rather listen to the sex pistols( anarchy in the UK is one of the best songs ever imo) than a band like Pink Floyd and springsteen doesn't suck.

There's a relief. I might have inadvertantly watched it and thrown my shoe at the television in anger at the dribble on screen.

As one of 'Punks' founding fathers...oh yes this is true... ~ ...before the 'revolution' it was stadium bands and onanistic guitar solos that ffs were just ...well wank...

After ....

well Led Zep ..ohhh plz men with perms in tight pants...ROFLOL..get a friigin life ~:grouphug:

Floyd...ok i'll give you this...good on Psilocybin and acid...rubbish otherwise.

old wave sucked BIG time.

New wave threw the lazy buggers a curve...

and it was all done by the sub-urbanites.

Power to the people ~;)

@ Genesis...I have mixed feelings 'bout these tarts...after all Phil did a 'competant' job on Brian Enos albums....(Brian was smart enuff to not let Phil sing tho...stay on the bongos baldie ~D )

Genesis. Why, for the love of pete?

Genesis with Peter Gabriel were awesome. After he left, they became bad.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a great album.

Left and right meet, on the subject of "nu metal"...

Linkin Park especially seem to be an affront to humanity.Linkin Park are the worst, since they combine "nu metal" with "boy band".

I can't stand punks. I hate how they play, they are too angry, they have bad hair, they dress bad, and their songs are short. I haven't ever heard them jam or play any acoustic songs. I can't respect a band like that.

50 Cent and the G-Unit. GOD! Make it stop!

Hmm, what else? I can't say Nirvana, 'cause I do like some songs quite well, even though I despise all that 'I want to commit suicide' stuff. Wait, I have an idea. Everything New Wave. God that shit sucks!

There are many bad bands, but I'll only mention one known internationally.

The Beatles. The humpty-dumpty guitar and slack drums irritate me all too much to enjoy the vocals, which aren't good but better than the rest. The music feels limp, for lack of a better word. Might as well call them "Beat-less".

Have you ever heard "While My Guitar Gentley Weeps"? Or "Yer Blues"? Or any of their later stuff?

Have to agree. Rap is not music. It does have some rhythm and sometimes there is a tune but over all its not music.

Rap -- not music? Then I can immediately discount all forms of electric music -- this includes synthesizers and of course that shit called dance/trance/hardcore whatever -- all forms of rock from the categories Nirvana/stoner rock to (modern) (heavy) metal, and anything all too poppy.

Rap is essentially poetry over a continuous beat (with peripheral sounds often added, such as a sample), which accounts for the not all too complicated lyrics at times. But it certainly takes skill. And since I expect you will not discount all of the above as being music, then hip hop cannot be discounted as being music either.

And Kenny -- come on! Funk/disco is great! Well, not as great as soul, but great nevertheless! ~D

Well I like some funk. And the Bee Gees are interesting, but I can't say that I listen to it. ~D
However, some great songs were inspired by disco, such as the Rollings Stone's Miss You, the Kinks Superman, and the Dead's Shakedown Street.

Rap takes very little skill, thats why its so competitive to get deals with record companies because anyone can throw together a rap on their computer.

I could write a couple of stanzas about bitches and guns that rhyme and slap them to a beat. I could not learn how to play the guitar in that time, or even 10 times that time.

The Wizard

I'm not talking idiots like 50 Cent -- who's raps suck, but he has Dr. Dre who makes damn hot beats and catchy hooks. The guy that comes closest to real skill amongst popular MCs is either Eminem or The Game -- and both are still far off.

I'm talking Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Slick Rick, Kool G Rap, OutKast, Goodie Mob, Mos Def, Nas and many other MCs who actually have skills. You try to freestyle -- it's not easy trying to weld thoughts into rhymes. And rhymes that you write for real are of even greater quality because you have all the time of the world to think of good, catchy and (perhaps) funny metaphors and rhyme schemes.

Most people think of rap as simply saying your lyrics in a rhyme scheme; but that's just a wrong view. You have to fit everything into something following the bass (your flow) -- and that isn't any walk in the park.

In all the strenuous debate about what is/isn't music, there seem to have been several major omissions from the list of the worst bands ever. I hereby submit these three piles of filth for consideration:

Creed (So happy they're gone, at least until they're all broke and have a reunion)

Bon Jovi
The Offspring

Well, I find really crappy music to be hilarious, but, technically, Wesley Willis was the worst musician ever. My least favourite band or musical artist would be probably...I don't know. Jay-Z or any of the plethora of terrible rappers that dominated the mainstream not so long ago.

Oh, and there's also a local band that sucks awfully hard. A friend and I were considering releasing an album about how terrible they are.

~

The only great song I know inspired by disco was 'Disco Boy" by Frank Zappa.

Disco boy! Run to toilet and comb your hair.
Disco boy! Pucker your lip, and check your shoulders,
'cause some dandruff might be hiding there.

Disco boy, your the disco king, aw the
disco thing made you think someday that you
just might go somewhere.

Disco girl, you're outa sight, you need a
disco boy, to treat you right.
He'll do a little dance, take you home tonight.
Leave his hair alone, but you can kiss his comb.

Disco boy! Run to toilet and comb your hair.
Disco boy! Shake it more than three times and you're
playing with @!#%! while you're standing there.

Disco boy, do the bump every night, 'til the disco girl
who's really right, gonna fall for your line,
and feed you a box full of chicken delight.

Disco chit-chat so demure,
pump that booty all across the floor.
A disco drink, a disco wink,
you never go duty that's what you think.
You never go duty that's what you think.
You never go duty that's what you think.

Duty. Go duty!
Duty. Go duty!
Duty. You never go duty.
Duty. You never go duty.
Duty. You never go duty.
Duty. You never go duty.
You never duty. Go duty.
Duty. You never duty.

Disco boy! You got one more chance, to comb your hair again.
Disco boy! They're closing the bar, and she's
leaving with your friend.

Disco boy, that's the way it goes, so wipe your nose, and
try it again, to get a little lay tomorrow.

Disco boy, no one understands, but thank the lord that you
still got hands, to help you do that jerkin' that'll
blot out your disco sorrow.

It's disco love tonight. Make sure you look alright.
It's disco love tonight. Make sure you look alright.

Well there is one more

Don’t know much about dancin’
That’s why I got this song
One of my legs is shorter than the other
’n’ both my feet’s too long
’course now right along with ’em
I got no natural rhythm
But I go dancin’ every night
Hopin’ one day I might get it right
I’m a dancin’ fool, I’m a
Dancin’ fool
I hear that beat; I jump outa my seat,
But I can’t compete, ’cause I’m a
Dancin’ fool, I’m a
Dancin’ fool

The disco folks all dressed up
Like they’s fit to kill
I walk on in ’n’ see ’em there
Gonna give them all a thrill
When they see me comin’
They all steps aside
They has a fit while I commit
My social suicide, I’m a
Dancin’ fool, I’m a
Dancin’ fool
The beat goes on
And I’m so wrong
The beat goes on
And I’m so wrong
The beat goes on ’n’ I’m so wrong
The beat goes on ’n’ I’m so wrong
The beat goes on ’n’ I’m so wrong
I may be totally wrong, but I’m a
Dancin’ fool, I’m a
Dancin’ fool
Youwsa, youwsa, youwsa
I got it all together now
With my very own disco clothes, hey!
My shirt’s half open, t’show you my chains
’n’ the spoon for up my nose
I am really somethin’
That’s what you’d prob’ly say
So smoke your little smoke
Drink your little drink
While I dance the night away, I’m a
Dancin’ fool, I’m a
Dancin’ fool, (etc., etc.)

I may be totally wrong, but I’m a
I may be totally wrong, but I’m a
I may be totally wrong, but I’m a
Fool-uh!

Hey darlin’...can I buy ya a drink?
Lookin’ for mister goodbar? here he is...
Wait a minute...I’ve got it...you’re an italian!
Hah?
Yer jewish?
Love your nails...you must be a libra...
Your place or mine?

What a friggin genius this guy was. ~D
