View Full Version : the effect of music on battle
it has come to my attention that when i play rtw i have different styles depending on the music i am listening to, such as when i am listening to rock ( ac/dc or whoever) i tend to be more aggressive and look for a battle with anyone whoever no matter what the odds, and when i am in the battle i always attack straight away running in all gun blazing as it were , i don't weaken them with arrows or artillery.
but when i am listening to music such as coldplay and the like i tend to avoid battles and when in them i always seem to defend and just chill until the enemy gets to me.
just wondering if anyone else has noticed this?

It's the same when driving a car. When you don't want any speeding tickets, you better don't put a Fear Factory CD into your music station.

well if you ask me, i am not able to listen to anything else than the total war ingame music or without any music at all. it makes me confused. but i agree. if i turn the gamemusic off, i am playing much more carefully. ~:)

Music doesn't affect me, although historically it affected the hoplites marching into battle. It doesn't matter what I'm listening to, I fight according to the demands of my strategic and tactical aims. Necessity and generalship trasncends all music.
I only listen to the game music. The music used to have an effect on me earlier, but now I am too used to it to affect me. The music is very cool, btw.

of course. I loop the soundtrack when I'm typing out lecture notes or revising. Helps to no end to sooth my nerves. Can't live without RTW now :-)
If you like the music in RTW you should get the Gladiator soundtrack. The composer of the RTW soundtrack said he listened to Gladiator for inspiration and used a lot of the same styles because he wanted RTW to have the same feeling.
In case you don't know, Gladiator is a hollywood movie set in Roman times. The story itself is complete fiction but they have pretty accurate props and settings of the time. It starts with a huge battle in Germania against the barbarians using a lot of special effects. Flaming arrows, onager fire pots, ballistas, etc.

Absolutely. The music in Gladiator is fantastic. ~:)
Troy sports some excellent battle music also.
I wish the game featured musicians on the battlefield. There isn’t enough signaling going on. Each general unit needs a trumpeter or a drummer or something. Tubae and cornu would be great to have in Roman formations.

Take a look at the Forge, there's an up and coming music mod for RTW consisting of music from all of these soundtracks, and then some.
Or if you liek the soundtrack to RTW check out a band called "'Dead Can Dance"
it has Hans Zimmer and Lisa gerad in it. Hans Zimmer composed the Glatiator soundtrack and Lisa did the vocals. He has done many soundstracks.. i wouldnt be suprised if he has some kind of apperance of the Troy or kingdom of heaven soundtrack.. But yeah check out Dead can Dance. Great group with very deep ancient sounding music

I never listen to any music when playing games, ingame or otherwise. I just find it an annoying distraction.
The first thing I do with every new game is go into the options and turn the music off :)

I like the stock music scores included in the game myself. Also, and I'm sure all are aware of this by now (but the game is kinda new to me, so its a n00b observation of sorts), you can tell when the tempo of the battle is picking up, or when to press the attack. Ya know, the humdrum march score suddenly interupted by the attack melody. It adds to the game battles in a manner I've seen not too many others use, IMHO anyway.
I do however agree with the Gladiator soundtrack recommendations. Great to listen to, probably even better to play RTW listening to ~;)

I seem to remember a mod somewhere replacing the RTW music with sections of the Gladiator soundtrack, but I'm not sure where.

look at the Forge for your answers... I saw it somewhere there. Alternatively there's the music mod that replaces it with gladiator, taegukgi, and many others.

I'm with Ptolemy (well not actually WITH him if you know what I mean, we are purely platonic aquaintances), I love AC/DC, Deep Purple or the like blasting when I'm playing. Gets the adrenaline rushing. :guitarist: But, ahem... only when my other half isn't in the house.(Oh and btw, she wouldn't be happy about me being WITH Ptolemy) ~
The RTW music is cool and atmospheric, but sometimes a mass suicide charge with *Speed King* blaring while I'm screaming CHAAARGE just can't be beaten. :charge: :charge:
And then I get my ego sliced into wafer thin shreds and handed back to me on a plate by a unit of peasants, I turn the music off and go for a nice cup of tea.

During the Campaign the in game Music is grand, But while in battle my advice is to turn off the music altogether. When the music is on in battle it seems to have a strange "rush and get the battle over with" effect on me, When there is no music i tend to scout out the field, see what im up against and generally maneuver carefully putting more emphasis on tactics.
Like it should be done ~:)
