Hi, I'm new to Shogun and I have a few questions. I'm not sure if these are covered in the manual, as I didn't read the whole thing yet.
In the game, how exactly does the weather affect your units? I know that snow on the ground makes them tired quicker, but if it's raining or snowing does it do the same thing? Also, I'd suppose fog decreases the range of sight...
Also, does anyone have any good strategies to attacking a province with a bridge? I almost always do better than the computer when I fight myself, but on bridge provences I often chose to have the battle automatically resolved :O
Thanks in advance...I know I had more questions, but I forget them :P

heavy rain renders units that shoot useless
the lighter the rain the smaller the effect
fog decreases your range of sight, obviously
but also those of the units you can really creep up on the enemy with fast units (Cav archers) in dense fog and shoot them from behind and disappear before they do anything
the bridge thing is too much for the moment but there should be something on it in the strategy archive

Guns are useless in the rain.
Bows are less effect in rain and/or wind.
Snow tires units and slows them down.
I think rain has a similar fatigue effect to snow, but only effects units with alot of armour.
Fog is confusing, especially when its thick and the enemy seems to attack from nowhere!

Interesting, I never realized heavy rain did that to shooting things :P
I was wondering specifically why you would chose the day you fought on if it had no bearing to the game. I understand now. Thanks guys!

Attacking a bridge vs. the computer:
Bring some armored troops, like yari samurai and no-dachis, one ashigaru unit, and plenty of archers and/or gunners. High honor is a plus.
The computer usually likes to camp across the river, out of range of your archers. But you can draw the computer forces towards the river, and in range of your archers by moving a unit across the bridge. Ashigaru are good for this because they move quickly. The comp army will move forward to engage your unit. Have the unit retreat, while your archers do as much damage as possible. The computer forces then usually retreat again.
You can repeat this numerous times, until the enemy's numbers start to weaken. If you do this well, you should have few casualties, and only in the ashigaru unit. At this point, charge across with the naginatas. Make sure none of your own units blocks the far side of the bridge.
Your second or third unit across should be archers or gunners. Once they are established on the far bank, the rest of your force can come across without much resistence. The computer generally stays back for a while when missile units are on their territory. If the comp HtH units charge, rain arrows/bullets on them from across the river.
This is most effective with smaller armies, but the principles work for larger battles as well.
Don't expect this to work against a human opponent.

Your unit will get tired quicker in summer since the heat can exhaust anybody with armors.

Actually, my findings show that units tire quickly in the rain and cavalry tire quickly in the winter if snow is present. Also, light wind and rain do not affect your bowfire that much, but of course it is always preferable to fight in clear days. Or if you know you are going to be fighting against an enemy with plent yof muskets, attack during a season which has the greatest chance of raining or snowing so the enemy guns don't work.
I usually attack bridges the same way Tachikaze does, and it's worked for me. Of course, you can always try to overwhelm the enemy so that it retreats/abandons the province thus saving you the effort of having to fight a battle!

And, as usual, I have to mention to the new generals the fun of attacking bridges in the spring - attack during a heavy rain, and don't use any missile units! Half of the enemy army will be rendered useless, so you can charge with your No Dachi and wipe them out. Take advantage of those weather modifiers! If you have no gunpowder units, wait for the rains! On the other hand, if you have LOTS of missile units, wait for good weather and lure him in as mentioned above.
In fact, as you lure him in, you can have a unit of spearmen set to Hold Form/Hold Pos and when they're halfway across the bridge, tell them to Halt. They'll hold the middle of the bridge. If the enemy attacks, they'll walk into your missile fire. If they continue out onto the bridge to attack your yari, then THEY will also get the close-combat modifiers, eliminating their main advantage! For those who don't know, if your units are crammed together, like on a bridge, then they will take minuses to their combat calculations. Take advantage of every modifier!

Do units really tire due to heat during summer? I wasn't aware that they did.

Yes, however I've been using this name for almost anything online for the last 3-4 years. I'm generally a Starcraft player but I do have a wide variety of games I play.
