I was wondering, have anybody messed with the text-files in the "AIData" folder?
Seems like you could alter something there.
One thing I especially like is the remarks in the "historicalformations.txt" file, (wich apperantly are used for the set up for the attacking player); "Don't want ai to use these wacky formations" http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
But we as human players a stuck with them??? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

That's not entirely accurate.
Actually those "wacky formations" can be extremely useful, especially when you are attacking, you can choose between those pre-set formations so that your troops can show up close to the way you want them to be.
Also, suppose in single player, you have more than a full-banner of the troops, and after hitting the "circular reinforcement" button to shuffle around the reserves, some of those units will show up really weird (say, you replace a kensai with 60 No-Dachi, then all the no-dachi will line up in a single file). That's when you use those "wachy formation" to straignthen things up.

hey dagdriver, remember me?
anyway - I've always wondered how we can change those whacky formations so we can have troops lining up as we want - however its something I've never tried...
