Just for fun, if you could start a new faction with 3 provinces what 3 would you choose? And why? Which 3 would you never want to start with?

I have picked my 3 but I want to see what others say before I comment.

3 to start with: Constantinople, Rum, Nicea

3 NOT to start with: pretty much the middle of the HRE (duno the names)

Constantinople, Trebizond and both the provinces immediately east of it. Constantinople is very advanced and the other two provinces are to secure it's eastern border. I would still want to play the Turks though... I would also like to start with Ireland just because Ireland gets Gallowglasses and I am Irish.

I would never want to start with only the island provinces such as Cyprus, Corsica, Crete and Sardinia. I don't like having to depend on my navy to deliver troops, even though I usually build a strong one.

Malta, Sicily, Naples. One border province, two rich provinces, one secure island.

Sweden. Rich iron deposits, 3 things to trade, good position to conquer the Norway and build loads of +1 valour vikings with attack bonuses to conquer the Danes and Germans.

Syria. I sent my first crusade there and I had a lot of fun raiding the 5 or 6 arabic provinces which surround it. Syria is a fun province.

Toulouse. +1 valour for chivalric knights. I always feel the need to take this province as early as possible so I can build it up so I can churn out elite knights. So far I haven't built a country which can produce valour +1 chivalric knights with a +4 armour and +4 attack bonus. With a lvl 8 general, I'd like to pit such Attack 14, Defence 14, armour 11 knights against the mongol invasion.

Sicily, Naples and Rome would be my fav. I like the idea of being secluded but not cut-off. The money would be nice and I like the idea of not having the pope in Rome :sneaky: He can have the PS and I would still basically only have one boarder.

sweden, norway, and denmark.

All make could trade money, train cheap and powerful viking units, and one province defense even after conquering saxony, which also makes good trade income.

lest favs, crotia, serbia, and malta.

No trade income, only special units slavs are very weak.

I agree with this Atlantean fellow; Sweden, Norway, and Denmark are some very fine starting provinces.

Norway gives you +1 Valour vikings, a very capable early unit.
Three trading resources in Sweden means a building a trading post and a fleet of ships = cash cash cash. Iron means it'll become a very fine infantry-producing province down the line. If you manage your cash right, it's possible to get silver-armoured, +2 weapon Viking Huscarles, which is a downright scary unit.
Denmark has some trading resources, which means it'll start earning some nice money with just a trading post. Decent farming, too.

Three of the worst? Any three in the HRE. HRE has it tough as it is, imagine starting with the same neighbours but only three provinces. Those three island provinces in the Mediterranean would make for a tough start. Shame I forgot their names.

I second your opinion on both the best and the worst.

At least in the Early period, the Scandanavian provinces are simply among the best ones to start out with. Denmark and Sweden provides some very decent income, while at the same time Norway and Denmark will produce for you a fine army and navy, respectively (don't forget Denmark's +1 bonus to longboats!). In time, of course, the Vikings and longboats will become obselete, but absolutely dominate until that point. ~

And yes, the Mediterranean islands pretty much suck (except for Sicily, which can give you just ridiculous trade income). But I agree the HRE generally starts out with the crappiest provinces in the game. Limited trade goods, few provinces give you bonuses to any troops.....but worst of all is the fact that the Germans have very limited access to the sea. When playing as the HRE, I'm usually compelled to seize Italy (at least north of Rome), just so I can get some good trade income going.

Those would be my second choice. But I like the centralized location of Sicily, a few ships and I am rich enough to make units better than the Vikings and their longboats without worrying about support costs. Plus its cold up there and isn’t there like 3 months where the sun doesn’t set? And another 3 when it doesn’t rise?

The worst would be 3 in the middle of the HRE, Polish or Hungarians territory, too many bullies for neighbors. Having the 3 islands would be slightly better just because you wouldn’t have to worry about being attacked right away.

For producing troops Denmark, Scotland and Ireland would be sweet, 5 special units! If only there were connected.

I you like provinces with massive trade income, play as the Egyptians. Antioch, Tripoli, and Egypt alone can bring in over 10k a year after just a a decade or so. ~

and French (ancestry you know ~;) ) I usually kick butt on normal, but with
many surprises along the way ~ . I may move up to hard with a little
more help from you guys ~D .

Leon, Castile, and Aragon. all three generate good income, have iron, and the +1 valor for Knights of Santiago in Leon is a nice bonus. plus, there's some really good provinces that border those three(Toulouse, Portugal, Valencia, etc)

Hi chris34au,

It is my duty to point out to you that this is an approximately three and a half year old thread. "Resurrecting" old threads is known as "Necro posting". If you see an old thread that you think needs bringing up again then please by all means make a new thread of your own. It's always good to see new threads and this is quite an interesting subject matter. If you've any questions at all please drop me a PM.

Kind regards
