View Full Version : The Ashes Series Begins
It's pathetic how excited I am.
I haven't been around here for long. Can we get a roll-call of Aussies and Engerlenders? (friends close, enemies closer etc...) ~;)

Should I know what that means?
Or can I chalk it up to my love of College Football?
Azi
Worry not, my friend. You're not supposed to know what it means.
It would be like discussing surfing with a Kalahari Bushman.

Mmmm...surfing... I will admit, I do miss doing that. I was in Brisbane for a while. The beaches were not exactly close, but they were a heck of a lot closer than Minnesota is to a decent surfing beach!

I have been greatly looking forward to the first test - and the Ashes - for a few weeks now, it should be a cracker, a cracker in which we win! ~D
Get ready for a beating boys.

I was like a kid on Christmas Eve yesterday (my wife told me Christmas's can'thave been very good then - she's not a cricket fan ~;) )
As a pom who used to live in Australia, and whose best man was an aussie, this series has extra meaning.
Hopefully this will be a series for the ages (with England winning natch)

COME ON ENGLAND (and Wales) !!!!!
I think this is our chance. I am not confident that we will win, but I believe that this is our best chance to win in years. I can't imagine we won't win at least one test.

I love the Ashes, me.

The last two matches pitting England against Australia were disasters. If only the opening batsmen could get their act together more regularly...
Anyway, England all the way!

Anyone see the crazy backflip earlier by the Aussie batsman (can't remember if it was Gilchrist, Kaitch or Warne) ???

Argh its all going wrong. England 18 for 2.... guess we started counting our eggs a little too early before the hatching.

McGrath has killed us this innings, but its not the end of the world, Jones has stedied the ship and if we can get somewhere close to the Aussies total we still have a good game on our hands

Ahh JAG! I ment to congratulate you on the Hammers return to the premiership!
More London teams the better if you ask me!
anyways back to the cricket.........

64-5? It's still doable. Just a shame it's always the opening batsmen who seem to let the side down.

The sooner that &^%*(*&"$£$ McGrath retires the better!! :furious3:
Still, the old England would have been 40 all out, Peterson and Jones steadied the ship a little bit. If the tail can hang around with Peterson for an hour tomorrow morning he should be able to get us around the Aussie score.
And did you see what Peterson said to Jones as he came into bat?
"For f***s sake, get on the front foot!"
Good advice seeing as England had lost 5 batsmen trapped on the back foot...
Still, a great bowling performance by England, really roughed em up - Langer, Hayden, Ponting and McGrath all took nasty body blows (elbow, head, cheek, chin respectively). Shame McGrath spoiled my great day of cricket watching :furious3:

Why thank you, I am still very chuffed, was over the moon for a fair few days after our win in the playoff final. I just hope we put up a respectful amount of points.

I thought you supported Arsenal JAG?
Don't count your chickens, I bet we come out firing this morning, wait and see.
And me supporting Arsenal?! You have to be kidding! Never have, never will! Pft! :p

Even pseudo-bodyline tactics and England is still getting hammered... bother, another boring season of cricket. :help:
Look, just start text messaging the Aussie batsmen that Shane is text messaging their wives... ~;)

Agreed, but we still have to bat last on a wicket the groundsman thinks will break up; Warne must be licking his lips.
I am confident we can still do it. If we battle it out this morning and get ~40 runs less than the Aussie total, get another good bowling perfomance in and... You never know.
Pape - pft, we destroyed your batsmen just as much as you have to us. If our tail wags as much as yours did we should be fine and in a comparable position. Boring?! It has been damn interesting.
It will be boring if the English don't start winning the tests.
If you don't get it by now, I want the English to win, I just want them to win as sportingly as possible.

155 ao tight as a ducks backside
As I stated earlier, roughly about 40 behind is not too shabby and we are still in it - we got to 35. So it isn't over yet, imo.
Need to start taking some wickets now though. If we only need to chase around 200 we can get it.

Jones and Jones for opening batsman in the 2nd innings?
Lets face it, it's a bit sad when our 3rd best run-scorer is the 11th man and the 4th best is the extras column.
King Edward

But the Aussies went much better so no point getting down on our batsmen after 1 innings of a 5 test series. Great Fielding by Pietersen for Langers Run out!

Bump - thoughts?
Depressed. Very depressed. Our catching was abysmal, our batting suddenly faded away, it is not as if the Aussies even bowled that well. saddening.
However, the whole day today - Sunday - could be rained out, I live in London and it is already looking dodgy the forecasts too have rain pretty much all day in London. Maybe we can be saved by our weather?!
King Edward
07-24-2005, 12:25
Gotta Love the british Summer!
I agree our catching was terribel, you just cannot afford to drop that may chances agains anyone, let alone australia! Flintoff has been non existant with the bat this match which is a big dissapointment, i relly want to see him and Pietersen swinging away in tandem. Its still possible but not looking likely now. Jones needs to stay in a Pietersen need to score the runs.

2 Quick wickets (Jones and Giles) its as good as over now, i will be shocked if this goes into tomorrow

:snore: Please dear England win the next test and I might actually watch more then the news higlights...
Very disappointing, I couldn't face watching this afternoon, went out instead. So disappointing. Let us hope we play better in a week or so time.
England just needs to buckle down now and get serious. They've got the strength in bowling to win this series.
McGrath has the psychological advantage of this being his last Ashes series. He knows what to do... he just has to go out there and do it, the same as he's done for years. The English opening line-up need to get their heads down and weather the storm for a while.
It's early days.

More Bouncers! It really put it up the Aussie batsmen in the first innings, yet we failed to do the same in the second.

07-25-2005, 11:11
Strauss and Trescothick need to get their act together and beat the opening bowling. Flintoff is just a waste of space lately (when batting and when fielding).
King Edward
07-25-2005, 11:32
Strauss and Tresko set us up quite well for Pietersen and Flintoff to knock them all over the shop unfortunatly no one could hold up an end whilst Pietersen was scoring the runs. We need Vaughn to be able to last more than 5 mins at the crease!
Flintoff is Englands best player by a LONG was, ok he had a bad match but there is no way I'll be getting on his back just yet
Al Khalifah
07-25-2005, 11:56
Is it me or did the 1st Test just degenerate into a struggle to see whose bowlers could inflict the most damage on the other team's batsmen. The bowling doesn't seem very technical at all, just bouncers.
King Edward
07-25-2005, 12:45
No Warnes bowling was superb, had the English middle order guessing all the time. So much for him being past it! (although he did try to bounce Pietersen which was funny!)
Also Bouncers are a techinical form of bowling as if you pitch them too short or too wide its easy to club them for a boundry, where as a good bouncer is as unplayable as a good yorker
