Is it possible to give Roman Auxilia to Gaul, rename them Gallic Auxilia (just for Gaul), and get a green version for Gaul. I tried this but they were red:
type barb_auxilia_gaul
skeleton fs_spearman,
indiv_range 40
texture gauls, data/models_unit/textures/unit_roman_auxillia_infantry_julii.tga
model_flexi data/models_unit/roman_auxillia_infantry_high.cas, 15
model_flexi data/models_unit/roman_auxillia_infantry_med.cas, 30
model_flexi data/models_unit/roman_auxillia_infantry_low.cas, 40
model_flexi data/models_unit/roman_auxillia_infantry_lowest.cas, max
model_sprite gauls, 60.0, data/sprites/romans_senate_roman_infantry_auxillia_sprite.spr
model_tri 400, 0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f

The texture (skin) of a unit isn't going to change just because you changed the faction. You have to copy this skin and edit it to get the colours you want. Have a look at this tutorial:

This is such a catch-all head I´ll post my question(s) in here instead of opening a new topic. Please excuse me if some of them already have been asked and answered, but without a search function it´s impossible to find stuff.
Now, here we go:
The factions are, as we all know, assigned to different cultures, now I wonder, where is that done? And can it be changed, e.g. make a fifth Roman faction by deleting a barbarian one, or is the number of factions per culture fixed?
Is it possible to make a fifth Roman faction (roman buildings, units and all) that is not part of the Roman empire but a completely independent faction (showing in the senate diplomacy panel like any other- the initial roman faction don´t show there until outlawed), but using roman units and all?
How or where is the culture penalty defined? Can there be different penalties between different cultures (a stronger penalty for Romans conquering barbarians than Romans conquering Greeks)?

There is a search function, there are two in fact, they're both in the upper right portion of this page. And yes, on the topic of being able to find things, having titles such as "Modding Question" helps no one should anyone be looking for the same information, I think I'll change it.
The number of factions per culture is hard coded. The only way to get around this is by swapping over a tonne of graphics and texts. You also hit other hardcoded features such as the barbarian warcry and the Roman linked LOS.
The culture penalty is hardcoded. If you're really dedicated you might try simulating the effects by reducing the law/happiness effects on a cultural basis through building bonuses. You can find out more about that here:

I see only the google search, I tried that and I found it wanting.
So, if I want, e.g. another Roman-looking faction, I would have to use one of the, say, greek ones and give them all Roman units, buildings and tech-trees?

Hmmm... I recall now the other search function isn't available to junior members. Apologies.
Yes, that's what you'd have to do. Except that buildings icons and other stuff are done on a cultural basis, so you'd have to change all the greek factions buildings to look like roman ones.
