View Full Version : What To Name The New Iraq?

Al Khalifah

One issue discussed on Newsnight tonight was that of what to name the new Iraqi state. While I don't see what's wrong with just calling it Iraq, there are clearly those that want to give it a longer and more formal title. The problem is just what to call it.

Main suggestions included:
The Islamic Republic Of Iraq
The Federal Republic Of Iraq
The Republic Of Iraq

Unfortunately, whatever they name it, there are bound to be connotations. Naming it the Islamic Republic of Iraq would give it the same title as Iran and would suggest that the country is run by religious law rather than secular legislation. Federal Republic sounds too Western...

Any thoughts?

Now now, let's give them a chance before we become too cynical.

This wasn't intended as a spam thread. I was thinking more along the line of what would be most appropriate rather than a front-room esque idea toss.

"The Republic of IRAQ"

However the more accurate would be "US Oil Reserves of Iraq". :p

New Iraqi constitution

Article 5

"The Iraqi people are one people, unified by belief and the unity of the homeland and culture. Anything that exposes this unity to danger is forbidden."

"The state shall take responsibility for combating moral and behavioral depravity and encourage people and agencies to spread virtue, providing it help and support. The state shall ensure harmony between the duties of woman toward her family and her work in the society and equality with men in the fields of political, social, and economic life without conflicting with or disturbing the provisions of the Islamic shari'a."

4. The state shall ensure harmony between the duties of woman toward her family and her work in the society and equality with men in the fields of political, social, and economic life without conflicting with or disturbing the provisions of the Islamic shari‘a.

Article 6.
"There is no censorship on newspapers, printing, publishing, advertising, or media except by law."

Article 12
"Compulsory service (the corvee), slavery, the slave trade, forced labor, or any work that is imposed on the Iraq citizen not in accordance with the provisions of the constitution or the law are forbidden."

6. Citizens are equal in assuming public positions in accordance with the conditions established by law.

Article 13 proclaims "citizens are equal in assuming public position" – but only "in accordance with the conditions established by law."

"Public and private freedoms are protected provided they do not conflict with moral values and public decency."

This is a very strange document!

If all these rights are dependent on implementing legislation, then they are rather meaningless aren't they?

Does the above article 12 mean that slavery would be legal if passed into law?

It's the only name anybody's ever going to use, so I don't see what the point of causing lots of debate over a long name is.

Have fun, ichi, JAG, kiwitt, et all?

That's a pretty sucky constitution. The only way to fix it would be...

Liberal activist judges. We'll export ours over to Iraq and watch the constitutional fireworks. ~

The problem with just calling it "Iraq" is that it doesn't really sound nice. Lot's of countries (see the CIA Factbook for specifics) have longer formal names, but are referred to by shortened names. If we are going to set up a puppet nation, dammit we'll do it right. ~;)

It's not just "Lot's" of them, it's all of them. They all have longer names, depending on the type of governmental system they have set up. That's what decides it, not some kids on a wargaming site, not even the president of the united states. The name is bound by the system of government.

Gibraltar doesn't. It's in the factbook, but has no "conventional long form" name.

Pwned! - just scroll down to Gibraltar. (http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/fields/2142.html)

I don't really care if it's a dependency of the Great Britain. It's in the factbook, and that's all that matters.

And the name isn't necessarily bound to the system of government.

Man, it always seems like the left Wants us to fail!

Even if Iraq is making progress, they call it a "quagmire". If troops die, they report on how grave the situation is and how we will fail. But all the while they rub their greedy little hands together with total glee.

Everything that might be bad for America is good for the left. They want America to fail. They want the terrorists to kick our butts in Iraq. That way they can shake their heads, wag their fingers, say "tsk tsk", and then scream for campaign contributions to overthrow the "secretive" and "lieing" administration.

Hmmm. Maybe we should be bombing the DNC as well as Iraq. ~

Quite ironic how many democracies do not call themselves 'democratic' but actually opt for much more totalitarian sounding names.

For example: The Kingdom Of Spain, Kingdom of Belgium, Kingdom of Denmark, United Kingdom.

That suggests these are harsh oppresive countries as opposed to a nice fluffy nation like The Democratic People's Republic Of Korea.

I am not sure there will ever be again an Irak country.

So i would bet on Kurdistan, Iranistan and Syriaistan on the middle or long term.

But on the short or middle term, it will remain a blood bath for irakis so i do not think any name would have a meaning exept if it is Republic of Irak People's Slaughter.

It is formed from three Ottoman regions: Mosul, Baghdad and Basra

If you want to go back really far it would be Sumer, Akkad, Assyria or Babylonia. Or Chaldea or Persia.

A little more recently Baghdad was the capital of The Abbasid Caliphate. It then became a part of the Ottoman Empire.

It was given the name "State of Iraq" by the League of Nations.

Boznia and Herzegovina doesn't have a formal name. Neither do Belize, Canada (that's a big country as well, so ha) and Ukraine.

Canada is a Commonwealth (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) and that doesn't have a conventional long form name.

Its a joke Steppe , it is an alteration of a document from the Third Reich .

Commentary and Translation by Nathan J. Brown

NOTE:
July 27, 2005
In the past few days, a variety of constitutional drafts have circulated. I have not had time to
translate, much less authenticate the various drafts. Two in particular deserve mention, however.
1. The Iraqi daily Al-Sabah published a complete Arabic text at:
http://www.alsabaah.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=9064
I believe that this draft is a compilation of the work of the six subcommittees that have been
charged with developing the initial draft for each chapter of the constitution. From public
comments it is clear that such a draft was circulated among committee members on Saturday, June
24. This Al-Sabah draft appears to be the one circulated on that date. It was thus compiled before
the full return of the Sunni representatives to the committee; some Sunni representatives
strenuously objected to the draft on the grounds that it had been composed and compiled without
their participation. And indeed the Al-Sabah draft not only has a very strong religious flavor—as
has been widely reported—but also a specifically Shi`i flavor. The draft indicates those issues where
strong disagreements remain and offers alternative phrasing for some provisions. It also has some
mild internal contradictions, suggesting that it is still incomplete. Since the draft’s compilation, the
Sunnis have returned to the committee and apparently some changes have been made, but I am not
aware of any leaked version of subsequent drafts.
