View Full Version : NEW LEVEL FOR DEMO ENGLISH 100 year war
Hi
I've been modding the demo for the last few days and have made a new level. It pits french against english in the 100 years war. It includes new units ie longbows gothic knights, men at arms and feudal sergeants. It uses the jaffa map but with new terrain (it looks very different).

96mgb, Just played your battle and it's pretty good. I lost first time around, but on second I managed to just about swing it my way and won.
Then I switched sides and that was all too easy. The AI ran from side to side of the castle trying to decide what to do.
The 2 units of 200 Archers were pretty effective.
I killed of all the units apart from 2 Longbow units and the ChivalricKnights that were both in hiding. Found them round the sides of the castle hoping that I wouldn't find them.
Half the Knights were on one side of the castle and the other half on the other trying to dig through the walls to get back to form a complete unit.
Did some checking of unit stats after playing it to see which units were best. The Seargents are actually suprisingly very poor fighters but are good against cavalry with their spears. I thought Sergeants would be superior MenAtArms but seems they are more like YariSamurai from STW.
Maybe this will be one of the first units to get some tweaking on the stats!
Might go try the battle again now I know this, from the English side of course.

Oh yes that's better, this time around as the English I won convincingly.
Knowing that Sergeants are Spearman made all the difference. It was still touch and go at one point in the battle though.
96mgb, On a first attempt I would have to say that you produced something extremly playable and challenging.
Maybe giving the French some MenAtArms might even it a bit, and give the AI more tatics to try.
I din't design it to be played as the french. I found that unless the saladin unit from the origional is present on the 'french side' the ai won't attack as its scripting doesn't work and you can't change the troop type of saldins unti. therefore I had to make it so you played the english as the ai works. I'm not sure how to edit the ai at present.
In regard to the sergeants i can't change them to men at arms for some reason the game crashes if i do must be a limitation of the french? I will try to change them to gothic men at arms. On sun i will make som e changes and release it i will lower number of royal knights and add more units for each side so the battles even bigger :-)

OK this is a long one - and it is also draft version one - I am looking at making it more realistic - number of unit/ soldiers per side, also reinforcements and 2v1

96mgb, Wasn't implying that you should balance it so playing as French against English was an option.
It's impossible to make a battle that is good from both sides as the AI would then have to be as good as a human player.
Did some checking and can't see why you managed to get Gothic knights but not MenAtArms on Saladin army. I noticed the Gothic Knights are limited to German and Italian only and when the battle starts the graphic on them is incorrect on the unit icons at the bottom. Try playing as Saladin and you will see what I mean.
So it may be that the graphic isn't there for French MenAtArms in demo when it's expected, but as French GothicKnights are not expected it probably dosn't check for the graphic.
Will do some further checking/testing and see what I can find.

Something fun I tried was changing the missile type for the Genose Sailors to Trebuchet. This I was hoping would mean 60 Sailors firing Trebuchet rounds.
However I found I had a 60 man unit of GenoseSailors with a single Trebuchet for them to man. The range was equal to their bow range though making it useless.
96mgb I managed to get the Battle to work with French MenAtArms.
I changed the 2 FeudalSergeants with 4 honour to FeudalMenAtArms and with unit size 120. Dropped LateRoyalKnights down to 60 man unit too.
Battle worked fine. I did find if you have a file open still, that MTW uses, then it crashes so this may have been your problem.
Once I had the unit stats file open and forgot as I launched MTW and it caused an error with launching the game. Thought I had done something seriously wrong until I noticed.
Where did you get the numbers for the factions from?
ShadesWolf, Couldn't get your battle to work, get texture load errors. Think it must be to do with the Agincourt map.
Anyway changed bdf to this and used the Jaffa battle as setup area. So Henry army is Richard and Dauphin is Saladin.
Works great.
Won the battle but not sure how. Seeing all those French Knights would have made me run, but my army held strong.

Shadeswolf, just worked out why I was able to defeat those 1000 French Knights.
The Longbows carry an armour piercing weapon i.e. an axe which means when I sent them all into melee they actaully did much better than expected.
Also the ChivalricFootKnights get a cavalry attack bonus of 3. So in this battle they dominate against all enemy troops.
Got a new version of the levl added two units of 120 menatarms to french side and two units of chiv knights to english (i love a cavalary charge :-). Not sure if its to easy or not. if you want it email me on viper_goddard@hotmail.com

I played the first version of your mod, and it's very nice. I lost the first time and won the second time after pulling back onto the higher ground just in front of the castle. I was interested in seeing the longbows in action. I ranged between 33 and 68 kills with them the second time around.
Nice job!

The MOD crashed my computer 50% of the time but the other 50% sure it looked very nice.
I was thinking on buying the game but now I think I could be happy with the demo and the Mods http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
glad people like the mod never made a mod for anything before!!! I will try and make a new level but for a bit i have to much other stuff to do. End of july perhaps i'll release another as i will be on summer holidays.
