Mother-in-Law is in town. So found a few nice rib-eye steaks, marinated them in a teriyaki sauce (with worchestershire, garlic, onion, red-wine vinegar & sugar) and grilled them over charcoal, with a few mesquite chips tossed in.
She said: "Hmmm; not bad.". The ultimate compliment.

If I've got time, nothing will beat coals.
Otherwise well..darned gas. But hey, I like it better than baking!

ugh! this isn't even debateable! i demand you take down the poll this instant, as there should be only one choice.
(or was this a clever scheme to find the gas-grill users lurking among us? :shifty:)
but, it should be noted that natural wood charcoal is better than those awful briquettes. recognize.

Wow, Kurki. And your mother-in-law, no less. While I am still free of that particular relative, I do admire the fact that a "nice" rib-eye steak, prepared with the finese in which you prepared it, was laid on the alter of marital harmony.
I see your act as no less spiritual than when our ancestors (and in some cases, our fathers) used to cut out the finer parts of the goats and lambs, to lay them upon the alter for the Gods.
I hope your sacrifice brings with it sufficient blessings. You deserve it.
Meanwhile, I'm eating macaroni and cheese. What's wrong with this picture?

Not a damn thing.
Mac/cheez is the norm here, too.
Gracias for your comprehension of the sacrificial nature of my burnt offering. A well-prepared (vs. well-done) hunk of cow meat thrown upon the altar of marital harmony....
well, to quote the MasterCard ad: priceless.
But, to be fair, I've had some pretty darn good burnt cow off a gas grill, weilded by an expert.
But I counter: smoke. It's not just for breakfast anymore.
charcoal, or even better, a wood fire at camp

Not to hijack this thread, but does anybody else eat copious amounts of Ramen noodles. I mean, the real, Shin Ramyun noodles?

My friend went for convenience with a gas bbq, I worked on his girlfriend (purely in the platonic sense) and she got him to buy a coal bbq too! Tee Hee.

MMMM look at this

A barbeque smoker gives you the best tasting meat you've ever enjoyed! Meat cooked on a smoker gives you a tender and irresistible flavor. Barbecue smokers are available in many sizes and have a variety of different features. They're great for those who enjoy entertaining guests.
Barbecue smokers are not like your traditional barbeque grill. They come with a grill, water bowl and charcoal/wood chip bowl that combine together to lock in moisture and flavor. Meats should smoke for several hours in order to achieve a spectacular flavor and juiciness. The burners are made several different types of durable materials such as cast iron and porcelain.
If any of you have eaten barbeque down south you know this is so.

Oh well, I prefer the coals. A good BBQ is with coals or wood.

well Coal naturally (thats why I voted for it). But Gas is the only thing available on the Island. People don't like their homes smelling like charcoal.
We have a gas BBQ. It's all about convenience. But I do throw in apple wood and cherry wood chips (in an aluminum foil "boat") to get a better flavour in the steaks.
No doubt at all though, coals are better. Wood fire is best. I keep all the apple wood from our jobs. Mix that with cherry and maple and you get one bomber of a cooking fire. Mighty tasty!

Always charcoal, it creates a much better taste. ~:)
Strickland propane, taste the meat, not the heat.I use propane, the convenience and consistency make it easier to use. But charcoal does taste better.

Charcoal and coal are two different things you know.
And I think you mean charcoal, not coal. It makes the food taste nice and smoky, so I voted for charcoal and GAH!
Coal.
P.S. Don't quite catch how can you use "Gah" instead of it.

From what I have heard most charcoal is treated so much that it can be pretty bad for you, depending on how much you grill this could be a problem and besides my dad makes great food over gas so I have no reason to complain about the flavor.
Gas.

Coal, but grilling over burning wood has still the most style.
Charcoal taste better to me ~;) , but sometimes gas can be more
convenient especially at large cook-out parties.

From what I have heard most charcoal is treated so much that it can be pretty bad for youthat's why you should use natural wood charcoal (aka lump charcoal). more than just possibly being 'bad' for you, the additives and bonding agents used in briquettes adversely affect the flavor of the food.
Charcoal.
Just the smell of the fire is good enough for me to decide. :chef:

I have heard that as well. The food we grill turns out very well over gas, and the heat is even and reliable so I still think I would go with gas, but if I have the oppurtunity I will definately try some natural wood charcoal grilled food.

well, gas grills are certainly easier. a tiny bit of skill is involved in turning out great food off of coals. but, depending on your taste buds/vanity, the rewards are worth the effort.

Of course your in North Cakalaki. Some great barbecue down there I must say. I was stationed there for two years.

I use charcoal.
1. it tastes better.
2. it's portable: I have nowhere to call my own and no proper barbecue but if you get a relatively flat surface you can just get those coals going, use something to hold the food above them and you have insta-barbecue.
Insta-barbecue works almost everywhere: beach, backyard, top of a hill, wherever.
I like the idea of a smoker but that sounds like the sort of equipment that requires you to settle in one place for too long for my liking.
