View Full Version : Going back to MTW, mod suggestions?
The last couple of months i've found that i don't play RTW because it's fun anymore but because i feel like i should get my moneys worth out of it or something like that.
I got so many hours of fun out of MTW, and i had hoped for just as many with RTW. Sadly that hasn't been the case.
Finally, a couple of days ago, i installed MTW again and played it for the first time in over a year. It feels like coming home!
I have never used any mods in MTW though and there's so many i don't know where to start.
Any suggestions on good mods to use for MTW. I'm very much for realism so i'm not interested in any "Tolkienmods" or things like that.
Maybe i should add that i don't have VI, don't know why i never got around to buy the expansion. Maybe it's time to do that. ~:)

BKB and XL are usually highly reccomended. They both strive for more historical accuracy but they both have pros and cons and usually one isn't reccomended over the other. I am pretty sure you need VI for them though. :sad3: Sorry. It should be cheap if you can find it though.

When this mod is released it will rock... American Total War.
For a preview of the American Civil War era in the mod, including screenshots and a unit by unit preview, see this link:

Thanks, but it's really the medieval setting in Europe that interests me.
I had a look at the downloads section here at .org and there are hundreds of mods for MTW. Unfortunately it seems that 98% of them requires VI!
I did find a couple that might be worth testing. Does anyone know anything about any of theese:
Medmod_IV_1.85 by WesW
Historical mod by Aryaman
I'm not really looking for a mod because i don't enjoy MTW as is. The main reason is really that after testing the "Total realism mod" for RTW i was so impressed with what they had done for RTW that i begun thinging "I wonder if there's something for MTW that is even remotely of this scale".
Since i find MTW to be a much better game as a whole (my opinion), i started looking but haven't found anything...yet.
I believe most of the MTW mods for non_Viking Invasion require you to have MTW patched, so make sure you are up to date.
Wes' MedModIV v1.85 is essentially v2.04 but just for the non-VI version of MTW. You can read the info for v185 here: http://wes.apolyton.net/Total_War_readmes/1.85_Readme.htm It goes into great detail on all of the exact changes.
I also recommend downloading the Muslim Hordes add-on for 1.85, which increases the Muslim factions troop numbers by 25%.
I think there is a non-VI version of Fader_it's great Italy mod as well. It takes place entirely on the Italian peninsula and surrounding coasts with a completely new map. Let me check a sec. Aha! Yes, it is still there. Go here: http://www.fucilodi.it/itw/ It's the download for ITW v1.2. This is a wonderful mod to try.
Best of all worlds, would be go find Viking Invasion! Heh. Then you can try the homelands concept that Wes intrduced in MMIV v3, and Viking Horde's great XL mod, and BKB's great BKB Super Mod and many more.
Thanks Aenlic, i will try the ones you suggested.
You're probably right about VI, i should buy it. Maybe i can find it in a bargainbin somewhere? I'll look for it next time i'm out shopping.
If you can't find it in the older software bins at your local computer games store, you can always order it from the links to amazon.com off of the official MTW site here: http://www.totalwar.com/community/buy.htm The link for Viking Invasion shows that they have 9 copies new and used for $19.95. Not a bad price.

Thanks, but it's really the medieval setting in Europe that interests me.
Then get Viking Invasion first and install WesW MedMod 3.14, play a few campaigns and perhaps MedMod IV is ready by then ~:) In realism wise, there is no better mods than WesW Medieval Mods. IMO even more realistic campaign (because of even harsher territorial restrictions)than Rome: Total Realism 6.0. And the game is much, much harder. Rome, even RTR, is always too easy.
I made a mod for 1.1 a while ago that I think is pretty darn good. Unfortunately, I it's not too flashy and I didn't "promote" it too well, and so there it sits, just waiting for a friend. The mod is called MOYA II and I hope that you will try it. I'd just like to have a little feedback on it, if nothing else. It needs a little more documentation (I guess) since you have to open up the crusaders_unit_prod11.txt file to learn how the units are built and that's a hassle. I think that the game works best using the Glorious Achievements option. I know that the GA option "is broken" in some way, but I just like it. Anyway, it you conquer 60% of the map, you win whether you have GA on or not.
I only play using MOYA II and wouldn't play MTW any other way. Here's why.
I expect some things to "work" a certain way. I expect the Crusades to happen at the start of the game. I expect the Holy Orders and fanatics to be "Holy Terrors" on the battlefield. I expect the primary job of a king to be putting down rebellions. I don't want the game to become boring after the first half, with the end game becoming a big snore fest. I want each nation to have its own UNIQUE armies that have special units for that nation.
I want the armies I fight to be well balanced and have quality troops, not a bunch of peasants.
So I made MOYA II and it works very well. I like to play the Italians or Poles and try to win using "Glorious Achievements." It's exciting and it often goes "down to the wire"-- the game isn't decided until the last few turns in a furious series of battles against the other dominant power (usually England, Novgorod or Turkey). Tell me the last time you played a game in Early time period that went that way!!
MOYA II has to be played in NORMAL difficulty. Upping the difficulty just causes HORDES of peasants to be generated and it kills the "fine balance".
So download MOYA II from http://www.3ddownloads.com/strategy-gaming/totalwar/MTW/Stats/Moya2forV11.zip
and give me some feedback-- please!
