View Full Version : BI Demo Mods
:-)
i am reliably told by BKB that there are more to come,
Unzip this and copy the folders into your 'Custom' folder (The Barbarian Invasion Demo\bi\data\world\maps\battle\custom). This will also make the factions in the normal battles playable, but again CA never intended this so stability can be an issue. My new battles just use different combinations from those already on offer, are purely fictional, and aren't scripted, so they're nothing fancy, just for a laugh really. They might not be 100% stable though. I haven't had too many problems but just a warning in advance. Hope you enjoy them and find them challenging.

Ambuscade by Barocca (modded version of BKB frankish_ambush)
Flavius Aetius is leading a column through the night to make a surprise raid on a Frankish encampment.
Clovis, a Frank General, has had reports of Roman troops moving and has laid an ambush.
His informant was wrong, there are far more Romans than he believed, and wily Flavius decided to take a different route.
The Ambush is discovered.
:: best played on hard, can be won by either side.
As the Romans you are spread out and must decide to take the attack to the Franks, or recieve their charge.
A wise Frank general would let his archers soften the Romans up a little.
enjoy

The Battle of Ad Decium 14th September AD 533.
Following a Vandal raid on southern Greece the Eastern and Western Empires are collaborating, determined to put an end to the Vandal menace that has ravaged the Mediteranean and the Western Empire for almost a hundred years. Their allies, the Huns have sent a force of cavaly to assist.
The Vandals rule North Africa and terrorise the Mediteranean from their capital Cathage. Once again Roman Might must battle enemies from Carthage!
This Battle decides the future of Carthage and both Roman Empires. The Vandals outnumber the Romans and her allies by two to one.
The Vandal warlord Ammatas has been impetuos and, scornful of Roman military prowess, has advanced without waiting for the main body, a flanking cavalry attempt led by the Vandal warlord Gibamund has met with trouble trying to support Ammatas, the Eastern Empire cavalry and their Hunnic Allies are preventing him from getting into position.
The main Vandal body, some 22,000 strong, led by the Vandal King Gelimer, has outflanked the entire Alliance and is approaching rapidly.
Hints-Tips:: best played on hard :: for a real challenge play as the Goths (keep your heads down and ambush the tail end of the Hun) :: as the East you must crush the Saxons quickly :: as the Franks play on Very Hard

No, I must resit downloading the demo! Stop enticing me!
some extra tips
as the Goth wait for most of the Hun to pass and the Western force to move away,
then use your HA's to lure the tail of the Hun into, or at least near, the trees
then jump him with your spearmen and cav,
dont fall for the rout but keep you men together,
by carefully using HA's, heavy cav and spears you should be able to take the Hun apart one or two units at a time,
(cantabrian circle is handy - but watch for the Hun to send some cav around the back to trap your HA's)
the West will turn back to help the Hun,
they are a bit harder to crush - cant help you much there, they always got me...

BKB Battlepack 2 is now released. Adds 3 new battles to your game, featuring new maps (thanks Barocca) and different weather! One battle even features all 8 factions in an epic 5 on 3 (all Romans vs all Barbarians) and is not for the weak-computered! ~D
CRUCIAL NOTE: Before playing please copy the models_landscape and terrain folders from your original Rome game into 'The Barbarian Invasion Demo\bi\data' and also 'The Barbarian Invasion Demo\data' to ensure the new maps and weather work.
Please let me know if these work ok after this as I might have forgot other stuff.
Get it here:

The Battle of Tadworth (Box Hill) by barocca
447 AD the Saxon Warlord Hengist and his son Horsa land on the isle of Thanet off the coast of Kent. The following year they are raiding throughout southern Brittania.
448 AD : 27 October : 7am. A cold morning by anyones measure, Heavy Fog sits low on the ground as Artorius rouses his troops from their sleep and they continue the pursuit of the rampaging Saxons. Aelric of the Alemanni, is going to join Artorius at Box Hill.
But the Saxons know of the rendevous, and are determined to crush Artorius before he can combine forces with the Alemanni.
Artorius is outnumbered, Aelric will be arriving soon, but can Artorius hold out that long?
Hint/Tips :: Best played on Hard or Very Hard :: Cannot play as Alemanni, they arrive as reinforcements ::
As any Faction you must destroy your opponent in detail. Should you allow your enemy to concentrate with their reinforcements you will be defeated.

I am sure that there are few, B did you get a chance to play the river crossing yet. I need to rebalance the valor for the Saxons, but it was a neat concept ~
BKB, Refnulf and Barocca,
Just wanted to let you know that people are downloading and enjoying playing the modified BI Demo battles. I, and I suspect many others, really appreciate your work in creating and uploading these battles.
Cheers
Box Hill doesn't work for me for some reason. It quits back to desktop when it's loading the battle. I have tried all the factions.

did you do the terrain modification that BKB recommends above?
(that stopped one heck of a lot of crashes i was getting here)
CRUCIAL NOTE: Before playing please copy the models_landscape and terrain folders from your original Rome game into 'The Barbarian Invasion Demo\bi\data' and also 'The Barbarian Invasion Demo\data' to ensure the new maps and weather work.
if it still crashes let me know and i will investigate,

it is a neat concept,
yes, try as i might i could not stop the romans.
i could crush the brits easily,
but the roman armour is too good, my missiles were barely making a dent,
i was able to hold them on the bridge for (about) 5 minutes tops,
but kill-ratios got me in the end (5 to 1 in favour of the romans)
(i had about 100 men left)
B.
time for a silly one
9 carraige ballistae againt 640 goth spearmen,
for the Goths it's an easy win,
for the Romans it's a little harder

B.
i found the problem, i did have some extra folder i had copied across when BKB and I were experimenting,
these are the ones you need
copy these folders from here
Rome - Total War\Data
models_landscape
models_vegetation
terrain
textures
and put them in both of the following folders
The Barbarian Invasion Demo\data
AND
Barbarian Invasion Demo\bi\data
that should fix it
(just installed another cop of the demo and that behaves)
Free For All
8 small armies, all enemies. Just for fun.
I have balanced these as best i can without being able to see/check morale.
Hardest Faction romano_british (defending).
FreeForAll - 8 factions - no allies - all enemies - download link (http://www.3ddownloads.com/strategy-gaming/totalwar/RTW/Demo/Free4All_BI_Demo_BH.zip)
xtract demo mod battle from the zip into it's own folder
it is important to get the name of the folder correct,
or the battle may not play and will not show the text introduction.
Generally when you extract the zip there should be a folder with
another folder inside it (with the correct name)
copy demo mod battles into this folder
The Barbarian Invasion Demo\bi\data\world\maps\battle\custom
copy these folders from here
Rome - Total War\Data
models_landscape
models_vegetation
terrain
textures
and put them in both of the following folders
The Barbarian Invasion Demo\data
AND
Barbarian Invasion Demo\bi\data

just played the 'Free For All' mod, interesting fight!
most interesting, but not really surprising - doesn't take long till all the leaders but your own one are dead. Maybe CA should be given this mod just to re-amphasise the problem.
first run - yeah do the britons cos they're hardest. Oops, in the middle of the map, better get outta here i guess, but after having a good look around tried going somewhere safer but a coupla spearmen had wandered into the river and the first enemy cav were charging at them. Brought everyone else back to save them, massive melee, his leader died, mine died, half the troops are dead, and there's still 6 armies left.
second run - take one of the far outside armies. By the time I got to the middle everyone else was involved in massive battles so I sniped around with my cav making meleeing groups route. All the enemy leaders dead and my infantry still haven't lost anyone.
time for a third go, lets do the brits properly this time.....
