This is really driving me mad. Whenever I edit the slightest thing in descr_strat, like give a Roman Army and extra unit of velites, when I go to start campaign the game returns to the main menu. Could someone please help.

Have you considered posting the actual changes you made so that people are able to help you?

I added some Velites and Hastati and removed some Hastati from the Julii starting armies.

VERY useful tip when modding...

Set up a shortcut to your RTW exe file. Then go into properties and add

-show_err

To the actual program file executed by the shortcut. This will tell the RTW game to open up an error window that should tell you what it didn't like about your text modifications. This doesn't always work, but if it does, it will tell you which text file it didn't like, and which line.

If that points straight to your chnages in descr_start, then there you are. you mis-typed the entry, or asked for something you shouldn't. It should also give a clue as to why it choked on the line.

As ER posted, too, if you post a copy of the text as it is post-mod, that might let some ofthe text file experts see what might be at fault. Also ...do you have any other mods loaded?

No, just some of my own unit stat editing. I think I've got it sorted out now anyway. Is it possible to add units not starting originally. I know I can add Hastati, because just copy what was typed for the other Hastati. But for things like Onagers that the Romans don't start with, how do I know exactly what to type to give the Romans Onagers. For example, would I type:

roman onager

or

roman onagers

or

catapult roman.

it's "roman onager". look at export_descr_unit for unit types.

I'm sure I tried that but I'll have a look

Nope it doesn't work, and its the only thing I've changed so it cant be anything else.

Maybe found the problem, I was looking around descr_model_battle, and found no entry for siege weapons. What should I do?

Did you delete map.rwm yet?

every time you edit anything in descr_strat.txt or any of the campaign files you must delete the file map.rmw before running the game. Try reading a tutorial on campaign editing:

Actually you should never have to delete it because of descr_strat editing, i never have needed to.

Siege weapons seem to be defined a bit differently. They have their own file, as 'mounts' do to define their basic stats. The crew are defined like ordinary units.

This might be the casue of your problem. I am wondering if the game is somehow failing to define both crew and weapon. This may make it impossible to put siege weapons in as starting armies.

You could also try giving your faction some buildings capable of building onagers. This might help. Might not...I have never tried it!

There isn't any siege weapon in the :
standard desc_strat.txt.
RTR 6.0 desc_strat.txt.
mundus_magnus_v2-0 desc_strat.txt.

I have just checked it.

So far no proof that you can start with sieges weapons.

Better add the building needed to build those sieges weapons.

You lose 1 turn that all.

But I tried later with Arcani and that didn't work.

this post is a few weeks old...did you ever find out how to place them into the start of the campaign?
i'm having a similar problem adding onager units for factions that cannot build them...but mine crashes when i try to build the structure that will produce them...
i know in export_unit file, next to soldier, the onager units have entries like 'roman_crew, east_crew, ect.' and these are the entries used in descr_model_battle i think...
just havent figured out the finer points of this stuff yet.

hmm, well for me i've discovered that it is mostly typos...
