Post whatever you think the greatest modern day country in the world is and state your reasons why.

I say Scotland because it had the greatest warriors ever in the Caledonians, one of the few peoples to totally resist the Romans. Also invented TV, telephone, steam train, radar, golf, football and whisky.

Golf? Golf? why would anybody be happy if somebody invented golf? ;) only joking! hmmm how would you define the greatest country? obvioudly people are gonna say the country they live in so why not put down list of reasons why a country (in general) is great?

These cant go well....Perhaps it should be ' other than your own'

I ll go for Norway because basically their government makes more money than it can spend and gives 'an excesive amount of it' of it for aid.

I'd say Switzerland, they are they guys who back off from every fight and have stayed neutral for a hundred years or so...they even had the second world war, but they just wnt on skiing and eating swiss rolls. I also like the fact that, they maybe neutral, but they have one of the best trained armed forces in the world just for defence!

How shold I know? I've only lived in 3, and visited ....erm.... 8 more.
My favorite country would be a mix of the southwestern US, german bread and dairy products, dutch drug laws, and norwegian retirement benefits.

Any Nordic country!! And maybe Canada (except Quebec, if 10-12 'Quebecites' (sp?) behaviour is the norm, and what my Canadian friends tell me is true.)

New Zealand.

Rutherford, All Blacks, great food, huge amount of coastline, lots of different climates, make the ANZACs sound cool rather then a smokers cough (AACs).

Canada

Land. Water. Resources. Women. Trees. Rye whisky and great beer. The Rockies. Insane food production. Salmon, moose and deer steaks. Hockey (even though I hate it). Neil Young. Good attitudes. Socialized medicine. Our UN Peacekeepers. The Northern Lights. The North Pole. Santa Claus. BC Bud. Our massive Pink Floyd fan base. And the 12 Quebecers we send to Norway to mess with their heads. ~D

You forgot to mention that I live here ~D , so that's a negative and positive depending on who you are. ~

And yes I second that. Canada rules in every way. When I was in the US for a couple of weeks, I actually felt I was not at home and got a really bad feeling from it even though the culture and language is almost the same. But when I came back to Canada I felt really good again, as if I was saved. That's one great feeling.

The women here are the best looking in the world. No freaken joking. They are soooo fine. Too bad they hate foreigners like me. :dizzy2:

Humm.. New Zealand has it charms. Bloody cold when I was there! (Not its fault of course). But the women weren't great. Most beautiful country I've seen though.

Australia. Ah ha! About the only beer I can stand (VB and XXXX [no that is not a swear, the beer is called 4X]). Beautiful too. Too bad the women are insane. Got to love Brisbane's climate and surfing however... humm..

USA. Yeah well, we all know what's wrong with home. Every kind of climate you could want (except for tropical rainforest... but who wants that?), wide mix of women (hey, fat chicks need love too! [they just got to pay]), entertainment capitol of the world (yeah right...nevermind, that one does't help),

But hey, the USA is home afterall, so I'll go with the USA. If only Aussie women weren't nuts!

Hey you don't have to study Swiss history. You do not know what 400 years of neutrality does to history.

Norway or Sweden, possibly Finland.

The greatest nature, best fishing places - and beautiful women as well. What more does a man want, than an isolated cabin, very near a big lake, lots of trouts etc, and a busty blond woman

How I long to be re-united once more with my Nordic brothers (and even more so sisters!) from across the North Sea. A beautiful people who know how to have a great time.

England, because we beat the Scots (second greatest nation obviously).

Also America, for their coffee and decadence, without which we'd still be stuck with milky tea and baths.

Scotland!

The best place in the world. We have a lot of good poets, good historically great leaders and much more. And the bagpipes fills my heart every eime I hear it. By the way, In WWII, When Germans heard the bagpipes, they ran away.

Well, there's considerable disagreement about the telephone and TV. Americans played huge roles in the development of both, and its inaccurate to say that the Scots invented them.

and it takes an Irishman to play the pipes

No offense, but I find this to be a little silly. What does it mean to be great? What yardstick are we using? And what sort of low-rents would vote for any country other than their own, given an opportunity?

All that being said, assuming I cannot say US of A, I say Italy or China. Plenty of cultures have donated to our cultural legacy, but these two nations are the heavyweights in terms of total contributions.
