Veeery true.

Priests, especially the Catholics and even the Orthodox ones, often molestate kids. Bleah.

Here's the thread to discuss this.

Because they have a mental problem that they or their parents think that the church can cure them of, of course there wrong. But that isn't the problem, the problem is the church protecting them.

BS ...your average priest is not some pedo...Good priest are not mentioned often because thats not as good of a story for the news "as the molester who deserves to be shot priest."

Who says they don't?

The question is why priests, of all people, seek satisfaction in this inappropriate way?
Is it easier to keep it secret with choir-boys than with for example prostitutes or callboys?

Everybody knows that only Catholic & Orthodox priests molest children. In the entire history of mankind, no schoolteacher, psychiatrist, nurse, doctor, or anyone else who works with children has ever molested a child, provided that they were secular humanists. My eyes are open! Screw all this freedom of religion crap!!! We MUST BAN RELIGION NOW!!! Do it to save the kids...

Secular humanism, in order to be tolerant, we have to ban all other viewpoints...

There are pedophiles in every aspect of society.

Priests are not to have a family because they are married to the church and their flock. They are supposed to be dedicated fully to those.

Many protestant denominations do not support that view.

Imo the reason you only here about priests molesting boys is because the boys are usaully altar boys or something of that nature and therefore make an easier target

That's a filthy lie!!! Only Christians molest children, especially the Catholic & Orthodox priests. I know this is true, because I read it on the Daily Kos. I think the Guardian is doing a series of front page exposes next week proving that only Christians, especially priests, molest children.

BTW Orthodox priests, who can get married unlike catholic ones, are mostly into other men than to children. One needs just take a look at mount Athos were women are not allowed to go and only male monks live, needless to say it WAS the place to go if you were gay, for centuries. Of course nowadays the monopoly was lost to places like Myconos which are more accesible and offer better choices of accomodation...

...btw sorry abt this silly thread. its my fault :-/

Hehe Don. ~;)

Id just like to add one more thing..

Im not Catholic and not particularly religious, but Ive seen the good work Catholic priests do. These people live their lives in some of the worst places on the globe trying to help people. Theres no glory, no self importance, and virtually no chance for advancement in many of the diocese in Africa and South America - only self sacrifice.

I had to go to Mexico for a mission trip as I went to a Catholic high school, and it was horrible. I didnt want to go, and I hated every minute of it. The priest had been there for 20 something years.. He was white, and it was obvious from his accent that he didnt have to be there, but he felt Jesus wanted him to help the poor. And help he did... The church was the sole charity in the community and the only thing keeping several thousand children and sick people alive. That man got up every day and gave all he had to the poor. He had no electronics, and no nice things. The funny thing is, we werent even in what was considered a "bad" diocese.

So before people start getting carried away with their broad brushes, remember the vast majority of priests who do not molest, but sacrifice themselves for the welfare of others.

I think the orthodox ones kinda are...

When I hear them say things like

' And what is the problem with almost all of us owning Mercedes cars, everyone has mercedes cars today'

...or when they wear garments that can cost up to 50.000 euros...

...or when they talk about how they should run the place...

...they are just totally cut off from reality...

...I prefer catholic priests to be honest. They do look more down to earth.

Did the thread starter ever think about all the priestly affairs with women which are not reported in the media?

This let alone all the homosexual activity in the rest of society.

I'd wonder what the incidence of pedophilia and homosexuality amongst the clergy is compared to the general populace, I would imagine if not the same it is probbaly lower.

I think the only thing outrageous about the whole matter, is the way it was covered up in many cases, but then many organisations have done that in the past an continue to do so from schools, to hospitals etc.

I think the media likes bashing the Church and I know that certain closet anti-religious bigots certainly do.

Don't be ridiculous, you're halfway there. We all know that Catholic priests are all a pack of pedophiles, and have an elaborate plot to manipulate their parishoners to control politics. "NO RELIGION" is the only way to go. Do it for the kids...

No, no, no!!! CBS News did a documentary on the priest abuse scandal, and they never once showed anybody except for priests molesting children, so they must be the only ones that do it. The answer is, NO RELIGION ALLOWED.

Nah, most Catholic priests are not vile and evil.

Many are just your average religious homosexuals with initially modest sexual desires. But they have grown up with a religion that tells them that their desire is dirty and evil. One can only try to balance the two for so long. The easiest way out of the dilemma is to give up either your religion or your sexuality.

Many priests are priests just to end their confusion and guilt. They want to end their guilty feeling by becoming more pious, which makes them less likely to develop their only natural sexuality, which increase their guilt and confusion etc. Until eventually they have become their own oppressors.

But the nature of human biology is such that you cannot suppress your sexuality indefinately. And the more you suppress it, the more likely it is to pop up in extreme and perverse ways...

I think the percentage is about the same as in the general public but far below the percentage of gay men who are pedophiles.

What world are you living in? Many married people are pedophiles. Just because you have sex with a woman doesnt mean your not a pedophile or even gay or heterosexual.
The reason this is a big story is because their preists and held to a higher standard. That and the church trying to cover it up.

It appears Don objects to the idea of separation of church and state. I have a hard time pointing out times I've been discriminated against as a Christian for practicing my faith. Yet, I can point out many times that "fellow" Christians have tried to force their particular beliefs on me in inappropriate settings. Separation of church and state covers a lot of ground. I have no problems with keeping religious dogma out of a law making assembly. But telling kids they're not allowed to wish somebody Merry Christmas?

Stop putting words in my mouth. I'm not shy, and if I want to say I oppose the separation of church and state, I'll say it. Believe it or not, I don't need you to speak for me.

I'm not Catholic, but I find the original point of the thread and titles like this offensive simply because they are not even a fair depiction of the majority of those being lumped in the group. We have plenty of similar thread titles copied from blogs.

If you want to talk about the issue, wouldn't it make a lot more sense asking, "why have there been so many pedophile priests" or something like that?

On topic, but more in the vein of humor: At my best friend's Catholic wedding a decade before the pedophile priest crisis really was a common subject, I still remember my Catholic friends pointing to the various altar boys during rehearsal and snickering, "where priests go wrong."
