View Full Version : Pat Robertson praying for openings in the Supreme Court

Saw this on Comedy Central last night, watched the video of Pat. The links are from elsewhere, must not have hit the news much. Those of you in other countries might be surprised, but it is all too common a theme over here.
TV Preacher Prays for More Vacancies on the Supreme Court (http://www.au.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id=7499&news_iv_ctrl=1241&abbr=pr)
God will remove Judges from the Supreme Court (http://mediamatters.org/items/200501040010)
To summarize, Pat seems to think it is just fine to pray for vacancies in the Supreme Court. These are lifetime appointments, so you know what that implies. What a wonderful human being. Somehow I doubt that Christ is all that pleased to have this man claiming to represent Him.
McCain made a statement condemning this sort of extremism during his primary campaign vs. Bush. The GOP voters buried him for taking a principled stand vs. extremism. That was the final straw for me with respect to the GOP.
I see nothing Christian in prayer like this. What I do see is a warped little man.
Surely praying for the deaths of senior judges is treason?
the offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign's family - Websters
Looks like attempting to overthrow part of the state overtly there. Hang him.

lets see if they are answered :dizzy2:
sounds like a weirdo
Oh you guys are hilarious. ~D
Is O'Connor dead? No.
This is even from one of your links:
"Would it not be possible for God to put it in the minds of these three judges that the time has come to retire?"
Yeah, I think Robertson is a bit of a weirdo, but I gotta love the tenuos link you draw to the GOP too. Robertson = Christian. Most Republicans = Christian. Therefore, Robertson speaks for all Republicans. :dizzy2:
edit: Does anyone else think its scary that people actually get their news from Comedy Central?

Yeah, I think Robertson is a bit of a weirdo,
Yup he is to the conservative cause what NARAL and NOW are to the liberal cause.

Nothing at all wrong with that. I pray his prayers come true ~D
These are lifetime appointments, so you know what that implies. What a wonderful human being.
Now not only can you read my mind but his as well.First you imply that he wants them to die and then that because he wants them to die he is an evil man. He said neither of these. I take it as he hopes they retire to enjoy the final years of their lives in peace and that a judge more to his liking will take their places. He says many things that you can attack him for but I dont think this one really rates it.

Isn't she retiring because her spouse has Alzheimer's? Oh, shoot, there I've gone and burdened you with the truth you are attempting to gloss over or put some spin on...

I don't "get my news" from them, but occasionally they highlight something I was not aware of, especially when it comes to extremists. I watch Jon Stewart for a good laugh. Too bad they don't have a link to the Robertson part. It was right after "The Judge Report" if I recall.
So the initial conservative response appears to be: it's OK.

Do you think Pat Robertson prayed for her husband to get Alzheimer's? Oh, shoot, there I've gone and burdened you with the truth you are attempting to gloss over or put some spin on..

The initial conservative response is: give us a break.
Or, whatever happened to the First Amendment? I guess it's OK for it to protect makers of kiddie porn, but it doesn't cover the prayers of a nutjob.
It's not a big deal, and if we threw in jail or executed everyone who prayed Bush "retired" there would be a lot less people hanging around - according to you people, anyway.

He didn't ask for Justices to receive divine enlightenment and see things his way, or to decide that they would be happier in retirement. Try and spin it all you like Gawain, you are a master of that. We all know what he's praying for.
And in the clip he was gloating about this answer to prayer. So continue twisting and spinning Gawain. The truth is there if you ever care to recognize it.
I see nothing Christian in prayer like this. What I do see is a warped little man.
Pat Robertson is merely doing what he thinks will help to end the genocide of America's babies. there is nothing at all warped about that
what is warped is to stand idly by and allow the genocide to continue. or even worse, to condone or support the genocide

Who made you spokesman for the org?
ry and spin it all you like Gawain, you are a master of that.
I am a mere amateur as compared to one so great as you.
Now this thread is silly.
Protesting an individual's action which is fine - but using that individual's actions to demonize a whole group well is something else entirely.

American Protestantism was hijacked by the values of greed ages ago. This is why I'll never take us seriously as such a Christian country. I'm a pretty conservative atheist, so what the hell do I know?
I still think it's pretty obvious Jesus wouldn't have been a Republican. Also, for Pat to think that God has some vested interest in the legal disputes of any given nation is pretty obtuse. Even abortion.

He has a vested interest in what he created if you believe that he did as Pat does. Killing of his creation is not something I would think he would approve of.

Then why, in his omnipotence, would he allow it to happen? If other people hear voices in their head, we call them crazy but I guess that is another debate entirely.
Anyway, as we all know that all republicans are all bible-bashing hillbillies, we can safely assume that this guy speaks for all republicans in his comments, and thus we can all go home happy, knowing we have pigeon-holed and stereotyped another section of society. Yay for us.

I could see Him not approving. I still don't see Him interceding, especially via the SCOTUS.

Assuming that the prayer was simply for the removal of the "liberal" (7 of the 9 judges were appointed by Republican Presidents - you know?) - ProChoice crowd. We can assume that he didn't define how they were removed by God's grace, simply that he find away for them to leave and be replaced by proper thinking people that think as Robertson does.
That is hypocracy. It is also about as unChristian an act as I can think of. Praying against someone or something is blasephy. That he believes his prayers are being answered.
This is the guy that opposes "Planned Parenthood", on the premise that it is pro-abortion. When in fact it is pro-life, and only believes in educating people on unwanted pregnancy - to avoid the need for abortion.
Praying was intended for worship, not to send up a wishlist to heaven.

How can you assume that he wanted any harm to come to anyone? I doubt he had that in mind.

I have a nice bridge I want to sell you then. It is only slightly used, but well maintained. I'll be putting it up on e-Bay as soon as that little dispute over the sale of the Alamo is resolved...

Did you even read your own links? It has direct quotes from Robertson saying he wants 3 liberal judges to retire, not die. Then when we point that out, we're the one's reading too much into it? :dizzy2:
Even more precious is how you link Robertson, who's very much on the fringe, to the entire Republican party. "The final straw" Like you were a Republican supporter before this, but nope- not anymore. ~D

What? That they retire? Like Sandra Day O'Conner did?
I'll bet you never walk or drive. You probably jump everywhere you go.

And if had been paying attention you would realized she is retiring to care for her dying spouse. If anyone deserves that, then I submit it might be those conservative members here who see no problem with it. Gloating about it on TV is certainly obscene. If that is Christianity, then I would rather be an atheist.

Again, Mr. Knuckle dragger, I'll point out that McCain condemned this sort of extremist stuff back in 2000 (calling out Robertson and Falwell by name if memory serves--can't find a link to ID which two were being discussed.) The GOP voters thrashed him for it. It was then that I determined that I did not share the same level of religious fanatacism as them. I voted Republican for the primaries, but haven't voted that way for any major office since.
Is that an unfair characterization? Hardly. The GOP sent a clear message with their vote. Can't get much clearer than that.
So pull your head out of your arse and read next time...
