Roman army was made of legions, units of about 3000 (later 5000) men. Most of Roman soldiers were footmen, armed with spear, shield and sword as their second weapon. They also had archers and wooden catapults. The richer Romans were horseman (knights). For example, in the battle of Cana (Hannibal vs Romans), Roman army had about 55 000 heavy inf, 9 000 light inf and 6 000 cavalry on flanks.
In the early Roman history consules led the army. From the late 2nd century BC
army was lead by proffesional generals. Their soldiers were very loyal, and generals often used it to invade Rome :charge: when they weren't pleased with decision of the Senate.

To represent a pre marian Polybian legion I use armys consisting of 4 velites, 4 hastati, 4 princeps, 4 triarii, 1 general and 2 equites.
For post marian armys (in fact more an imperial army): 1 general, 1 first cohort, 9 legionary cohorts, 4 cavalry, 3 archers/slingers and 2 various units.
To improve gameplay and historical you can try some of Mods already released like R:TR +submods, SPQR, etc.. Also look in the forum of the very promising Europa Barborum mod. The open beta should be released "soon".
