View Full Version : Extraordinary Rendition

Sounds like a dance routine ... which it is, only a political one that allows the kidnapping of its victims to be sent to countries that allow torture (though they deny it - tongue in cheek) by a nation that proclaims its purity against such acts (and likes to claim it is a democracy).

I held off on bringing this up, because I was sure that someone else would bring up how right it is to pre-judge and/or allow torture against anyone that makes a statement against "us" (the western nations spreading freedom through out the uncivilized world).

Now, that I am off my soap-box (for the moment) I ask the question:
What seperates us (philosophically) from those we oppose? :

1) Is it that we are right and they are wrong?
2) That there is truely only one true religion and that is ours?
3) Democracy as we define it, must be spread regardless of the opposition of those we intend to liberate?
4) That torture is OK, as long as it is in the name of democracy, or the safety of our corporations?
5) Or, torture is a good thing if we force someone to give up lies, or condemn innocents, or justify that we were right in accusing them?

When is "extraordinary rendition" a good policy for a democratic society to claim as its own?

To me, of course, never. Not in a true democracy - regardless of the circumstances. It is like our USA press blaiming (allowing) 7/7 on the "liberal" immigration policies of Britain - versus it simply being a democratic society (one that allows the principle that all men are equal).

Extraordinary rendition. Rendition? Sounds like a musical performance or acting performance - an interpretation of something done before. And, I suppose it is. Like in countries 70 years or last week.

It is just me, of course, but this has no place in a real democracy. It does in Stalinism, Nazi-ism, Saddamism, and Bushism (obviously).

Some accounts claim that our agents (those sponsored by Bush) have snatched as many as 1500 persons and sent them to countries that allow torture (though they deny it). Other sources claim it is only 3-500, but all acknowledge that it is being done.

No doubt there are those that see no harm in a democratic society protecting itself by using fascist means to do so. Thing is, when one employs these means, it becomes what it claims it is not - or even hates. It loses a bit of the humanity that made it what it is (was). When a nation can no longer show the world its underware to show how clean they are? Then all know the undies are dirty, and our undies are very dirty (since 2002).

Extraordinary Rendition - or, the beginning of justification of anything for its own means.

For me, none of these points are valid.
