How have we made lasting peace in the past? Can the same methods apply to “current events”?

My experiences are limited and I am curious what others think.

The US (again, my experiences are limited) is an example of a country of many different states that have combined to become a reasonably stable and peaceful country internally (at least since the civil war). Without combining the states together there would have surly been wars between states over something (probably boarders as it is still an issue sometimes). Japan combined all its territories under one rule to make a long lasting internal peace. There are other examples but is consolidation the best way to make peace? Is being a part of the UN a step towards this idea?
