View Full Version : Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun

Since we have a HoI2 thread going, I was wondering if people have Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun, short, Vicky.

I have it, and I look for people to play it with. If you are interrested, please respond to this thread, with a date and time preferred and we'll work it out.

I can play almost all the time, since Im waiting for the Uni to start, so im on holiday.

What countries to play? Well, I don't care personally, but I think we should play countries close to each other and form alliances. However, if you want to kick my butt, that can be arranged too.

Note, the latest patch is 1.03

Hope to hear from someone!

Any links?

ShadesWolf

Yes im up for it

Im in the uk GMT
Friday or Saturday would be best for me 6pm to midnight.

I suggest we could get a good game going using

Belgium, holland, Austria, ottoman and Prussia
or Mexico, Texas, USA, CSA etc...

I would suggest we keep away from UK as its a little to large for the time limit.

here is an official link: http://www.paradoxplaza.com/victoria.asp

shadeswolf, cool!

I would want to play a rather small country, belgium, sweden etc, since it's been a while I played last time.

If you see this post - contact me on msn: skafsgaard@gmail.com and let's play tonight already.

Is the game just like Risk but way better? if you know what i mean.

Sjakihata
08-20-2005, 18:44
the only similarities it has with Risk, is that it features a world map. In Vicky you can play ANY country you'd like, you can control: trade, industry, politics, religion, military, navy, diplomacy, research etc.

Basically, you shape a country the way you like it, while interacting with a world. A great game!

King Ragnar

Did you buy it from a shop our do you just download it from the site?

ShadesWolf
08-20-2005, 18:56
Game will start at 7.30pm GMT (if i can get my daughter to sleep in 30 min)

I suggest we play as Belgium and holland.

Is anybody else interested in joining us ?

King Ragnar

Personally I bought it from an online shop in Denmark, ordered it online and they shipped the package to me.

But I've seen it in the normal shops - and you can order it from http://paradox.e-butik.se/ as well.

chaged the link to a place where you can actually buy it

Cool, another player. Me and shades met in the lobby - but we cudnt join a game. You'll need to configure your router to forward the ports victoria needs. If you've got questions, ask them here and I'll try to answer.

I suggest that you throw the manual out the window and got to the forums: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=160 and read some of the guides there.

Also play a country like sweden and mess around and learn what each button does etc. questions can be asked here as well. ~:)

How do I configure my router thingy? Do we play with a beta-patch? Any house rules? And if I might I'd prefer to be 1. Sweden 2. Sardinia-Piedemont those are the two I can think of...
Oh, and I'm GMT +1 but I guess you figured that out already.

Sjakihata

How do I configure my router thingy?
First of all what kind/brand of router have you got?

When you know that, check this thread: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115528

Now you need to open these ports: 2302-2400 you can configure that in your router configuring application.

Do we play with a beta-patch?
No, we play with 1.03

Any house rules?
No. But if you have any suggestions please add them.

And if I might I'd prefer to be 1. Sweden 2. Sardinia-Piedemont those are the two I can think of...
Well, I think me and Shades are playing belgium&holland, but you can be any country you'd like

Oh, and I'm GMT +1 but I guess you figured that out already.
actually you're gmt +2 since it is summer time, but im in the same zone as you are.

The manual/ guide you down load from the Paradox forum is far better than the one that comes with the game.

As a suggestion play Belgium as a start, its get you right into battle mode, and once you make piece with holland, you have plenty of coal and iron to produce steel. You can also build glass factories and then a beer factory.

All these items can then be sold on the open market to make loads of money.

Gelcub, you're using a router right? Have you any clue what NAT (Network Address Translation) is? Basically vicky and hoi2 uses specific ports to connect - and you'll have to manually open those ports in your router configuration tool.

Hey Sjak ! I'm up for a game. I can play any country, but I'd prefer to ally with you of course ! Been away for a long week. Let's get together as soon as we can and figure out what we can do. Legion Teamspeak is open I believe.

Sjakihata

Yup, I'm fully aware of the problem and how to fix it. However, the router belongs to my roommate and he refuses to give me the password. So I'm SOL.

gah...

that sucks man - you must be able to convince him, buy him a beer and a lapdance and go get that password! Seriously, there's no harm in it, just use a software firewall and open those ports, since only directX games are using those specific ports.

yeah get the beta patches from the forums... they fix the tariff problem as well as many other problems, you need to open some ports in your routers....
check them out at the forums.
also if you have even the slightest difference in version (other then the config text files) you will have problems.

You could always check the Paradox show (online)

Shahed
08-24-2005, 19:44
Yeah probably the patch 1.03c won't fix it, but let's give it a try. I hope it helps but I think it's more a software issue which seems also to emerge with HOI2. In any case we have more improvements with 1.3c anyway. I hope we can figure out how to get a game going.

I got my game from a media market, ages ago, about 2.5 years ago. It should be real cheap now. I think the producer's online shop is a safe bet, but then again you could probably get it for 5 bucks from ebay.

Shades Wolf have you still got VI installed. Some friends (including Sjak) and myself anre thinking of doing some battles, somewhat re-enactment and somewhat gameplay. We'll fix our army setups and start soon hopefully. Still thinking about it. Would you be interested ? Also if anyone else is interested please do let us know...

This is an example of a (surprise ?) Turkish army 3vs3, unvalored and without upgrades. Just an example of what I mean by fixed armies and tactics. In this case the 3 players on this team would decide how to operate as part of a unit i.e all 3 act as one force. Each player is responsible for his own regiment acting in conjunction with the other two regiments:

Missile Regiment

As always you can count me in.

Would you prefer to do that or actual battle reinactment?
I seem to remember we were going to try an do a Kalka river reinactment but it never got off the ground.

Shahed

the Historical Re-enactment Society thread has been bumped.

hey you guys, i've played alot of mp, especially lan mp, heres a tip from me to you's, make sure your enemies can't cut you off and make sure your economy is diversified enough to prevent a glut from destroying your nation, coz from the games i have played glutting the market is a prime strategy to destroy someones economy during a war.

its really funny, the last game i played as italy, before wars started nations like america would organise weapons sales (this works by glutting the market with small arms and stuff similar and organising a payoff by one nation to the nation glutting the market, this drops the value of the good so its cheap to outfit an army, it usually happens with ships, coz artillery and steam convoys are really expensive for a nation not producing them) but sweden was involved in this war against prussia, and the sweden player was mass producing steel, so what do i do (i wanted prussia to thrive, so when france and prussia went to war, i could clean both of them up) i glutted the market with steel (by dropping 20k units on the market at once), sweden's economy plummeted and they couldn't stabilize and lost the war on the basis that they went bankrupt.
make sure this can't happen to you, and make sure that you can always get the stuff you need for your industries easily.
thanks,
dizzy

Have you had to change any setting to get the online version to work ?

Alexander the Pretty Good
09-01-2005, 02:56
As a newbie who has never played MP, I have a question:

Is the game buggy or is that just me?
Sometimes I do something and it freezes - music plays but nothing else. I have the latest patch and everything, but this is frustrating for an SPer.

And this game is hard! How do you hold 20k units of something at a time? Just set it at "buy if less than 1" while producing the product in large quantities?

Hehe. My current Brazil campaign is OK for a beginner. World power (#7) though only because of prestige. Making enough money to work on industry.

dessa14
09-03-2005, 07:25
check out your comp stats (it doesn't seem to work well on minimum), it doesn't freeze much with 1.03c.
yeah just set it to buy, and just collect what you produce, controlling the prices of goods on the world market doesn't matter in single player, but in mp, its a very strong tool to cause all kinds of havoc.
thanks,
dizzy
