So it has been brought up that many people here think that the NATO is worthless and it should be disbanded. What`s your opinion on this matter?

I think NATO should be disbanded but the US would be wise to maintain individual alliances with european nations.

The europeans would IMO benefit from NATO being disbanded as well. They need to forge their own military alliances and this is hampered by NATO.

I agree that the NATO has served its purpose and should be disbanded. Its a drag to US and without it Europeans would have to start beeing independent again and forget about the Cold War.

No.

The western, democratic, first world should share a common concern for protecting our way of life and for the spread of democracy around the world.

I think that if the USA is to remain in NATO, Europe should start peying for OUR military. If China is the new threat, we're alot closer than Europe is. Pay up!

I dont think there is a rivalry between Europe and China. And after the collapse of Soviet Union.Western Europe doesnt need allies against Eastern Europe.I dont think China has any ambitions towards Europe. The rivalry is between China and USA.

Since NATO provides for a common defense, all members share the benefits of a common system. I fail to see how replacing that with a thousand individual alliances is going to be more efficient. It simply makes each one weaker. We had a system like that before WWI and WWII.

If i'm correct the NATO provides support for the European Command of USA, so pulling out will make the Command less powerful at least. If i lived there I would think twice in saing "pull out".

Plus America isn't going to want Europe to end up with combined armed forces larger and more powerful than hers. Hell, Europeans don't want that either.

For those who think NATO is doing nothing I suggest you say that to the Spanish people (this is national news here in Aus... it should be in the EU and USA):

KABUL, Afghanistan - A helicopter carrying NATO peacekeepers crashed in a western Afghan desert Tuesday and another flying with it made an emergency landing, killing 17 Spanish troops and injuring five others providing security ahead of landmark legislative elections.

So are you going to pay for the trade deficit first?

Just review what happened to China and Japan as a result of isolationist policies.

I'm pretty sure that there's a joke about the yankees constructing a wall, and then being flooded. What a coincidence... ~;)

I can't say if NATO should be disbanded or not, but it sure needs a new set of rules. It's a defensive alliance where members happily attack places and ask their defensive allies for help. That strikes me as somewhat twisted.

Hay Strike, are there any other heathen states that should not be included inside the wall other then what I named?

She wants no registration at all what so ever. Wants to keep ar15s ak47s and all those other "evil" rifles legal.(I dont know what she thinks of the 4473 though)

The reason she wants that is because some people in her neighborhood(when she was a child) had guns and they kept the kkk away, if those gun were registered they would have been confiscated.

Why would the worlds only superpower need help with China ? Or with Iraq for that matter. I notice that the American posters make it clear that Europe is inferior to US, so why bother with us small peasants. China and Iraq is all (up) yours..... ~;)

If it wasn't for all the pansies who demand an overly humane method of warfare, we'd be done with Iraq by now.

Nato should not be disbanned, but maintained, now and forever in my opinion. There may not be need for it now, but in the future there may be threats best faced together as one. It was created for the protection of both, for america to pull out would be dishonorable and ignorant in my eyes. NATO was origionaly made to protect Europeans lets not forget, and if America should ever have need of its use, I pray that Europe will stand by us just as we stood by them.

I have quoted the above because I have an arguement about that, the reason China is a problem for our military force is because of two reasons. 1. China has enough nukes to wipe America off the face of the earth, and if we were in a war I bet they would use all there nukes all at once, having god knows what kind of effects. 2. We unlike the chinese government care about civilian life, and wouldn't drop a nuke. A high ranking officer said once that if it came to war they would prepare for the loss of all cities all the way up to the city of xiao. This shows blatent disreguard for there own citizens as this would be a huge loss for them.

Anyone with that many nukes and that much disreguard for civilian life is a force most resonable people wouldn't want to mess with, and after America is destroyed, do you honestly think that with the only super-power in the world gone they would just agree to stop there? I would bet eventualy they would aim for a country you care about. But that is all hypothetical. Thanks to NATO we don't have to worry about it, because if that happened and they dropped say four nukes, every military force in America and many I am sure from Europe would be fighting in China.

America may be the best in infintry, tanks, and air force. {Then again they might not be}, but when a nuke hits, it really doesn't matter. Because you don't have to be trained to have your skin instantly chared to the wall by a nuke. Well thats all I got for now ~:smoking:

NO NO NO NO NO NO !

It has changed its purpose, but ask any eastern european if it should be disbanded - he would ask you if you are mad or something ~;)

Nukes are a little too drastic. We're trying to pacify the country, not destroy it.

Oh, pacify.... I will try to remember that next time I watch CNN..... ~;)

Nope. All it would add is another step or two to the refining process. Plus the refinery workers would need those cute little badges.

I checked out poll results and it seems that Americans and Scandinavians are most willing to disband NATO.And central Europeans,Brits and Eastern Europeans would like to let it live.Incase some of you dont know it Swedish and Finns arent part of it at all,so i think that is the reason why we wouldnt miss it. ~D
