Freedom of speach or another assault on the youth veiled as freedom of speach?

Pretty stupid policy. That's my favorite word to hear, ever, don't get me wrong. Still, children need to learn 'time and place' and school (recess aside) isn't one of them.

You can't teach kids things like morals. You can teach them etiquette and this is just f*ing retarded.

I'm pretty cool about things like this, but only idiots curse at teachers. Being able to curse in class is fine by me (and we should be able to, but I'm not about to test it in most of my classes), but not at the teacher, especially the f word 5 times! That's just dumb.

I am all for freedom of speech, but I am also for some level of maturity when using offensive words, a level of maturity that I am willing to gamble will not be employed in this situation. I myself swear to a slightly excessive degree, partly from working with construction workers and partly from being half Irish, but I have made it a personal rule NEVER to swear at an educational authority member, unless it was absolutely necessary (such as if said authority member made a tasteless joke about my political alignment, to me specifically). If you allow students to swear at teachers, however, they will, in general, swear at the teachers, and to an exess.

Edit: forgot to mention, the students should be allowed to swear at each other. As long as it doesn't get out of hand.

Detention for a week for a single swear word.
Parents get called in.

Do this a second time get suspended for a week.

Third time, don't come back. Your parents can pay for the homeschooling.

A teacher should have control of their class and the respect of their students. Good teachers will and crappy teachers will get cursed at. Outside the occasional nut job student a good teacher shouldn’t have an issue and the crappy ones… well, I say f@ck um. If they get swore at enough maybe they will quit. ~

But if a teacher is given no authority to punish, it will be difficult to maintain respect. It doesn't matter how intimidating you are, if your students know they can curse five times and you can't do anything about it, and that even if they curse fifty times all they'll get is a "talking to", you're in a weak position.

Teachers should be issued automatic weapons. Then when the little snots talk back, the teacher can just take them out. Kill two birds with one lead-jacketed bullet, as it were. Maintain control in the classroom and remove a threat to the gene pool at the same time.

How often will the boss of your company let you swear at them?
Seems to me they are teaching them how to fail in life.

Firstly, for those not from the UK, the Daily Mail is a right wing paper with a doubtful reputation for in-depth analysis. You may have picked this up from the article. It does not make it clear whether pupils are allowed to swear at the teacher five times or use swear words five times? Does each class have a limit of five or each student?

In my mind there is a huge difference between using a swear word in a conversation and swearing at a person. If a student says "I watched 'Mission Impossible II' on the telly last night and it was f---- s---" I would do three things. Firstly, insist on a more articulate explanation of why the film was poor, secondly insist on no repetition that lesson, and thirdly ask why that student was not completing the work set.

On the other hand if a student said "You are f----- s----" or "He is f----- s----" then I would take the sort of actions outlined by Pape, because the issue is a lack of respect for others and not "inappropriate language"

"Skanky donkey ****ing m***** ****ing s**t piece of ****.

Sorry, for once I disagree with you in the extreme here...

I heard the head of the school in an interview, this is aimed at trouble kids who swear their brains out anyways...

And on your home schooling issue, please...please, these kids barely show up at school 50% of the time, how can you expect them to be homeschooled? Their parents seem either not to care or simply have no control

This 'idea' should be discouraged for no other reason than the teacher should be teaching not keeping tally of who said what.

As someone said before. If a swear word slips into a conversation, perhaps reprimand if severe but otherwise let it go.

People often fail to see the distinction between swearing at someone and swearing in conversation.
