Whee, been looking for this game for a while both legal and when that failed...some more legal ;).

Anyway, just found it through an digital marketplace (2nd hand).

Absolutely loved the game!
Anyone else who has played it ?

It's pretty ancient but the graphics were/are terrific!

I played it at a friend's place, surprisingly good fun and certianly didn't look bad for it's age.

Played it. Loved it. Rune got far more attention than Severance Blade of Darkness but it's clear which is the better hack & slash fantasy game. I could have done without Severance's console influenced combat moves but it's such a small thing to quibble about.

I also loved the ambient music that played in the background, most of it was fantastic and really appropriate to the setting. I loved the ambient music so much I copied all the mp3s from the install directory and listen to them on my mp3 player every once in awhile!

One thing about SBOD's 3D engine that totally blew my mind was its ability to render excellent shadows without destroying the framerate (even when additional shadows from monsters came into play). I don't know how the developers did it but they should have gotten some recognition for such a stroke of programming brilliance. Severance oozed atmosphere due to a number of factors but those shadows really pushed the 'wow' factor over the edge; it was incredibly cool to be walking down some dark corridor with only a torch for illumination and see your flickering shadow on the wall.

My pet favorite move in Severance was hacking off some baddie's head or arm and using it as a deadly projectile against his comrades! You could even beat baddies with severed appendages... pure fun!

There are some mods out for Severance that you might be interested in. I used one which incorporated strafing movement into combat. Talk about a handy mod! I know there are at least two full sized user made levels out there with working quests. One of them has your character breaking out of prison. Do a google search and something should come up.

i had this game for a few years. it's a really good game.

my main problem with it is that on one level the room fills up with green lava or whatnot - immediately - which is guaranteed to kill you unless you know before entering the room that you need to start moving right away

because of this, i ended up having to do that whole level all over again since reloading a saved game in that room would result in my guaranteed death :furious3: traps like this are a horrible design decision that should never be put into games.

and also for some reason on the troll level (second level), i always hear the "troll music" playing in certain spots of the level even after it appears that i have killed all the trolls. ~
