I have just watched the England V Wales match and on paper it should have been a strole in the park for england.
I am now currently watching Scotland v Italy and that WONDERFUL Wolves Striker Kenny Miller has put Scotland 1-0 up.
So my question is this.
For England any home international match is always hard (ie Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland) But how does the rest of Europe see these matches ?
Do you have fear in Playing Scotland, Wales or N.Ireland ?
FIFA Rankings
1 Brazil
2 Argentina
3 Netherlands
4 Czech Republic
5 Mexico
6 USA
7 England
8 Spain
9 France
9 Portugal
83 Wales
86 Scotland
116 N.Ireland

Those rankings are wrong and the US are given a high position even though they rarely play against the best European teams. Spain and France outclass US at football, no doubt.

OK, a more serious reply.
Well Wales has been doing pretty ok recently. They can field a more than decent team, and Giggs is a truly fantastic player. Shame he can't play for England, a player like him should really be able to show what he is capable of at a world cup.
N-I really is too small, they have what - 1,5 million inhabitants? They're probably doing just fine considering how small they are.
Scottish football is a complete and utter joke. The Old Firm may lend it an air of decency - and those tartan-clad fantasists may cling fiercely to bygone glories - but in reality it is the worst of all the traditional football nations.
I remember Scotland being pitted against the likes of Zidane and Henry a few years ago. It was a total carnage. Four-nil by half-time and not a drop of sweat spilled by les Bleus.
Duke Malcolm

The Tartan Army doesn't go for hope of a win, it merely goes to try the local alcohol, and an excuse to get fair drunk.
To be honest, I fear Scotland playing any team... although the 1-nil against Italy is quite nice...

While the USA is probably overrated(I would place them more like #10) we do have a good team. We can compete with anyone in the world. We will be contenders in 06 and in 2010 we might be favorites.

Wales were awful today as was England, the match was dire. The scottish were great, played there hearts out and Italy did not deserve anything from the match. Unlucky Jocks. hope you beat Norway on wednesday but it will be tough

And Northern Ireland got their first win for a long time. whey hey!
1.7 million people in northern Ireland and quite a few people shun Football and play gaelic games so really We are doing very well considering.
Our proudest moment is beating spain 1-0 http://www.my-smileys.de/smileys2/lol-schild.gif

Correct me if i'm mistaken but your national soccer has the influence of argentinian players. Bruce Arena was decendent from argentinians and also Reyna, or not? This rankings of the FIFA are really absurd, what is doing Czech Republic over Mexico? What is this of USA over Spain, England and France? I really don't give a damn about this ranking from a far time ago, to me it's nonsensical.

To be honest its a insult to England, Spain, France and Portugal to be below the USA. I mean the USA has a good national side but I wuld expect those 4 to beat the yanks. They must go by brownie points now ~;) :laugh4:
Anyway It was Northern Ireland's first home win for 4 years and first win in 10. Lets hope win number 2 comes in the next game.....well a draw at least ~D

The Netherlands are like Spain really. They have great players but just can't play brilliant as a team. May I ask where is Italy?
Dutch_guy
09-04-2005, 11:21
Well Italy didn't perform well last Europan cup , so I'm not surprised there not in the top 10.
Although technically they - player wise - should be in the top ten. Wheras Mexico and US shouldn't
However Holland isn't bad as a team.. how could you get to the semi finals in European cup if you're a bad team, and don't say luck - since everyone who watched the EC would now better.
:balloon2:
having the usa 6th on that is nearly as big a joke as them trying to enter the cricket world cup, all import players, none of them up to the calibre required to form a good international side.

Louis, Giggs is great but you won't see him playing for England.
He absolutely refuses to play for a country that is not Wales. Which is fair enough considering he's Welsh (even if he may be eligible to play for England, I'm not sure if he is though).

what is doing Czech Republic over Mexico?
Are you kidding? The Czech Republic was hands down the strongest team during last year's European Championship and they are still doing quite well in the Worldcup qualifications (in a rather strong group).
Dutch_guy
09-04-2005, 22:37
yeah they were a great team last EC, and I would have wanted them to pl;ay Portugal ( who beat us in the semi's ) in the finals and take the titel.
But they lost in the second half of added time ( ?) to greece, who eventually won the EC.. ~
And as for the World cup qualification there not really going to well actually, there second in the group , but lost to Romania lost night , 2-0.
So in order for them to go through , Holland needs to lose the next 2 matches against Andorra and Macedon ( played in Holland , so that's not going to happen ) , and then Czech rep has to win against us to go through to the WC - without having to take part in the play-offs
And Nedved has to be fit , if he's still playing that is ~;)

Hehe romania has beat czech recently with 2-0, sadly they will still not qualify for WC:cry:, but yeah the czech really have a great team and will sure qualify for WC 2006. And for those who say holland doesn't have a great team the should watch some of their matches since they play fantasic lately and the results show this. :book:

I saw some Welsh games in the qualification for the European Championship 2004 and I was quite impressed. They were pretty close to qualifying, and I really liked the way they played.
Shame, Wales can pick quite a few great players from the Premiership, but being as small as Wales is, by sheer statistical chance they'll never get eleven decent ones together. You just know in advance that they are not going to qualify. I wonder, have they ever?
That's why I think Giggs should've chosen to play for England. I know he will not, but I was always let to believe he could have done so. Oh well, there's something to be said for his loyalty and sense of pride too, I guess.
Any world-class player from England or France sooner or later will be able to show what he's capable of at a world cup. I would really love to see Giggs pitted against Thuram or Cafu.

England schoolboys - but yes he did.
That ranking is about the silliest thing I've read so far. Has anybody confirmed this?
USA #6. Yeah Women soccer maybe. (well, probably #2 behind the germa ladies)
We're not even remotely that good. And the dutch at #3? maybe 6 years ago...
Mexico ... well, like their style and all, but I'ld put them at 12 tops.

how did they base the ranking on number of wins ? would say so since they put the US in front of spain.
It would make sense that we -the Dutch - are on 3rd place, we've gotten far at the EC in Portugal and we were good at the WC a couple of years back.
yes we don't have the team we had in '74 but still, seeing we've come far in all the major tournements ,that has to count for something.

Yeah the Dutch should be neart the top. Although the whole raniking system is a joke.
The dutch are very good, no doubt about it. But so are a number of other teams. If you take the germans for example... well they were second in the world championchip. In the european championship I think(but I'm not sure...) they were stoped in the quaterfinals. Not good, not bad. They have no WC qualifying games because they are the hosts of the next championships. They have other preparatory games... but how are those rated(I don't know)?Or is it also a matter of how the teams from the different primear leagues are doing internationally? That would make the US and Mexican ranking even less understandable since the american cups are not really dominated by their teams.
BTW, I don't have a favorite team or country.

What can i say. N.Ireland deserved to win as England gave one of the worst performances i have ever seen in my life. The decision which summed it up was when we went 1 down and the silly swede brought on Hargreaves. What in Gods name for?! Simply the worst player since Phil Neville ever to put on an England football shirt.
Ohhh i'm stunned and shocked and quite frankly ashamed of the England squad as every player especially Ferdinand, Rooney(who was played in the wrong position, again), owen, stevie G and Carragher should be ashamed of there performances.
Sven should do the decent thing and perform seppuku at the next home game and then he will be forgiven of this disgraceful( on Englands performance not Northern Irelands victory) defeat :bigcry:

England started well then they got a bit of a bruising and faded away.
Hargreaves was totally the wrong choice. He very nearly did a phil Neville near the end ~:)
Rooney left wing is just stupid as he isn't that fast and well he wil just go for goal.
Joe Cole was another strange sub. SWP was getting takled alot but still he had quite a few chances where he got past Capaldi (our Plymouth player ~;))

After the last World Cup, they were around 9th, so I wouldn't say they shot up that quickly. We got to the quarterfinals, and lost to ze Germans. The US is arguably the best team in CONCACAF, we were the first to clinch a berth for the next World Cup in the confederation. They have been in every World Cup since '90 IIRC (although we got the free pass for '94). Many of our players play in Europe, and we have two of the best keepers in the world. Our national league isn't the best, but it is giving our next generation talent much needed playing time. Oh, and Bruce Arena (the coach) is The Man.
The team is used to playing in hostile conditions, it rains quarters and batteries at our away games, and even our "home" games have a large portion (if not a majority) of immigrants supporting their country of origin. For some reason, we aren't liked very much in Central America. ~;) The biggest advantage our team has is that few people here really care, so there is little pressure on our players and they don't self-destruct from the expectations.
Now with that in mind, I wouldn't call CONCACAF the strongest confed out there. The ranking is probably a little high, they should probably be around 8th, but in front of Mexico. I don't know the magic behind the ranking system, I would think they would skew it some based on confed strength.

OK, mathematically this seems somewhat valid. Though in my opinion it really disfavors the european "secondary". Teams like hungary, ukraine etc. Ukraine behind Tunisia and Morocco? Hungary behind Zimbabwe and Uzbekistan? Northern Ireland and Scotland behind the mighty Togo? I don't keep track of the African and Asian leagues. ANd I'm aware that Africa is probably under represented in Worldchampionchips... but.... this? Mmmh.

Togo are near the top of the African world cup qualifying group with a great record and on the verge of being in 2006 in Germany. Hungary haven't been doing that great, i believe they are in Swedens group and are about fourth with no chance of getting to the World Cup.
There are quite a few surprises coming out of Africa, the Ivory Coast, DRC and some others. Morocco i don't think can qualify now and considering some of the awful teams theyed played against that is quite bad and Ukraine should be alot higher than they are after them topping there World Cup group with only one defeat.
The rankings are a joke anyway mate, no one pays any mind to them

Ivory Coast is not such an unexpected country from now on I think.
The Belgian and French league is full of quality Ivorian players.
Have a look at Beveren's squad. I assure you'll be suspicious if there are too many Ivorians or Beveren is a club exported from Ivory Coast.
Yes Ukraine has only one defeat *smiles sarcastically*
