I'm just curious what causes harvests to be good or bad. Is it totally random, or can I do something about it?

Sometimes I'll get like -25%, -25%, -25%, -50%, -25%, -50%, average, then really good. This can be very hard on your wallet, especially when your in desperate need of more troops.

As far as I know the harvest is a random event. That's why I think it is good strategy to invest in mines for they provide steady income.

Yah, Mines give the highest return for the initial investment and time needed for construction.

I have a good ports/trading post tactic going for Shimazu, 400 koku annually isn't too bad. Just have to watch the loyalty a bit.

Mines are always good to have http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Yep harvests are random - nothing to do with your wise leadership or benificent rule as the foreman suggests!
You will have bad years, so spread your spending. Its suprising how little building you can get away with and still be v.successful in the early game.

If your spies show you that your neighbour is building a port or mine, wait until he's finished before attacking.
