One of the best hippie movies in cinematic history. Stands right up there with "Easy Rider" and "Up in Smoke".

A few more lines:

"It's okay... I'm just admiring the shape of your skull!"
-Dr. Gonzo

"...found a waitress up by the restaurant. They cut her head off in the parking lot, poked all kinds of holes in her and sucked out all the blood. Yeah. How's your momma?"
-Man on a phone

"TELL ME YOU'VE GOT THE ****ING GOLF SHOES!"
-Raoul Duke

"One thing I have learned... is that you can turn your back on a man, but you should never turn your back on a drug, especially when it is waving a razor sharp hunting knife in your eye."
-Hunter S. Thompson

"There's a big machine in the sky... some kind of... electric snake.'
"Shoot it."
"Not yet... I want to study its habits."
-Raoul Duke on acid and watching TV, and Dr. Gonzo

"It was the Ether that worried me the most. There is nothing more depraved or irresponsible as a man in the depths of an Ether binge; and I knew we'd be getting into that rotten stuff soon."
-Hunter S. Thompson

I'll remember some more later. ~

If you liked the movie, you'll love the book. Written by Hunter S. Thompson, a brilliant writer - great sense of humor.

Hunter S. Thompson. May he rest in pieces.

My hero.

I've read most of his books, all are wonderful. I thought Where the Buffalo Roam with Bill Murray was better than the new one with Johnny Depp. It was that flick that turned me on to his books. Saw it by chance at 2AM when I woke up and couldn't sleep. Clicking through the channels, then "What the hell is this about?" Bought The Great Shark Hunt soon after and it's been true love ever since.

It's a great movie.
In parts I even relived it. Not the drugs part but .... well let me just say that since then I cannot drink white russians anymore, and I'm not alowed to live in the suites in the Treasure Island hotel.

You know what (and this is going to get me a ban from the Frontroom) I think the book is way overrated.

The first time I read it I thought it was pretty good. The second time I thought (1) drug trips are like dreams, everyone thinks their own are fascinating, whereas hearing about someone elses is tedious in the extreme, and (2), I don't know, but there was somethign about it that made me bet that in fact he spent the whole time in his room watching cable and ordering room service before checking out quietly and leaving a generous tip.

After that I read Sonny Bargers book on the Hells Angels and he said Thompson's Hells Angels (which I had read and thought was good) was a load of bull, and that Thompson was a skinny white Kentucky cry baby, or words to that effect. Which made me suspect the whole thing was just a schitck.

Thompson might have done it first but P J O'Rourke does it way better IMHO.

Thompson's Hell's Angels is indeed a very good book. I've also heard that Barger's book slams Thompson, but I don't suppose there's really very much we can do now to verify which account is the correct one.

Fear and Loathing is over-rated. While it's a fun read, it is basically an account of a drugged up road trip-it doesn't have the cultural significance usually imparted to it, in my opinion anyway.

Ummm ... how on earth do you conflate those two? Are you lumping together every journalist who writes with "attitude"? Politically, stylistically they're worlds apart. I've never heard anybody describe PJ as any sort of gonzo.

P.S.: Read "Curse of Lono." Probably Hunter's best. If you want to get into O'Rourke, I'd recommend "Parliament of Whores," probably his best work.

One of my favorite movies ever. Who ever created the acid scenes must have done some . Heck I thought I was having a flashback watching it. The acid was wearing off but the mescalin was just kicking in. Never trust a man on an ether binge. Some really classic stuff. The bats in the beggining and the woman morphing in the hotel were my favorite parts.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book; got the film on DVD, so I'll be watching it as soon as I can get some mates over.

Well Sonny more or less founded the Angels so I'd say he was in a position to know, though of course whether he chooses to tell the truth in his book is another matter.

As for P J O'Rourke being Gonzo/reminding me of Thompson, I give you "How to Drive Fast on Drugs While Getting Your Wing-Wang Squeezed and Not Spill Your Drink".
