This is a great cheat for desperate situations. Type in add_money 20000 in the rome shell and presto 20000 Denarii added to your treasury. If you need more just get off completely (all the way to your desktop) and start over again. it wonderful when trying to get your trade built up but need troops fast. ~:) ~;) ~D ~

Or you could browse in your RTW directory @ C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign
From here, open the descr_strat text file (make a back-up copy first). Now browse down to 'start of factions section'. Otherwise, hit Ctrl+F to do a search and type in romans_julii (the first faction in this section). Scroll or search your way through the factions until you find the one you're after.
Simply change 'denari' to whatever value you like, and you will receive this amount at the start of a new imperial campaign. There are limits to this, so watch out. Think someone said in another forum you can't go over 2 billion denarii before you generate millions of losses every turn, just play it safe.
I've given the rebels/slaves considerable starting denarii. At least now they can recruit sufficient armies to defend their settlements rather than getting walked over by other AI factions.

Alternatively, if you're a poor faction, and you do this early game, you could find yourself training units up that your economy cannot sustain long term.
