So, I have my army on a border and thrace, my northern neighbor attacks (or is attacked) by sarmatia. I get a pop=up message that says something like "Request for assistance": "your allies are requesting that you assist them. If you agree, then your army will enter the battle as reinforcements."
Huh?
I did it, and helped...
Can I do this? I mean, before a specific battle?
In almost a year of playing this game, I have never seen this! (I also have never seen an alliance with a bordering state last this long!)
Thoughts or comments, folks?

I've had it happen a couple of times playing as the Romans , while I was attacking egypt with whom my allies the SE were at war with.
So I had a couple of big armies roaming through the SE land , the border part with egypt.
And I got the message a couple of times , asking me if I wished to help my allies, I did it.
And IIRC, my army was right next to the SE army that was attacked... so that must have had something to do with it.
Just like when you attack someone with one of your allies inside the ''Red'' zone , then they probably get the message that I / you need assistance

That´s correct. Occupy the same "zone" that your allies are in then you or he will request assistant from the other depending on who gets attacked. It´s a pity that this feat is restricted to the small "red zone" next to an ally. It would be better if you could adress an ally near by to assist you then theese alliance-battles would be more common.

Yes, I have been asked to assist my ally, though I have yet to see my ally come to my assistance ( however this did happen a few times in MTW )
I would love to see this feature applied to the game in a more sophisticated way. It is something I have been asking for since STW.
For example, you receive a message scroll that reads........
"A messenger has arrived from your allies. Their land has been invaded and they urgently request that you send forces to help. Will you assist your allies?".......................YES/NO
This message would not be governed by 'zones'. Likewise, you could select your ally and get an option window that allows you to ask for assistance. This would greatly enhance the historical feel of the battles IMO

This was significantly easier in MTW. There you only had to share a border with both the enemy and your ally, then attack or defence you would be asked to help. They would even help you at times (and sometimes take the province you attacked).
In RTW it is very hard to do as the armies has to stay close together. And since the AI has a tendency to move them around with little plan you have to be very lucky for it to happen.

Even to have the AI use the existing diplomacy options would be great. A diplomat from Faction X could approach you with demand: Attack faction Y, Offer: military access, regular tribute. The diplomacy system can actually cater for a lot of this, just that the AI NEVER seems to use anything but the basic aspects of it.
