I don't understand why people hang up music posters in their room. It's sort of like saying "not only do they sound cool, but they look cool too". I prefer my decorations to be intellectually stimulating or aesthetically pleasing. I have a Rothko piece for the aesthetic and Magritte's "Son of Man" up in my room, but I can't fathom why people would want a picture of a band hanging up in their room. Can anyone explain?
What's not aesthetically pleasing about your favourite band? Well, popstars, at least.
It's a mix of idolatry and the need to surround oneself with things known and liked by him or her - an individual expression of culture. Your own choices for decoration also fit into this second category.
Some posters just look cool too, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers Americano tour poster is the band Day of the Dead style. Besides like Neon said, one's favorite band(s) on the wall is an expression of what one e/njoys. Hence the The Song Remains the Same movie poster (76/191 fools) and Americano tour posters on my wall.

My room is decorated with old newspaper clippings about funny stories, calenders and old CD's which i've coloured nice things on the shiny sides. No music posters. Like you, i don't understand why you'd have a picture of your favourite band on your bedroom wall.

depends if you like music performed by scantily clad pretty women.
I can see reasons for having those pictures on hand.
I had a big poster of Sepultura's Arise cover. Just thought it looked cool, very Cthulhu-esque. Can't see having a poster with the band members on it though.

They hung on my wall for 25 years until they became to delapedated to appeciate anymore. I should have put them under glass. Who knows what they would be worth today.

I have band posters in my room because they look good, and they're iconic images. I've got a Wish you Were Here calendar, and an Ummagumma poster, which I love-

I've also got a really cool periodic table poster-if I ever need to know the molar mass of caesium, I just need to look at my wall. It's stylish and functional!
Myself, I had some pin-up girls for a while, but they became boring. Some time ago, a Quebecois man retired from the workplace he shared with my mother. With a little niggling, I inherited his Unibroue beer posters.

I like all of my decorations in my room. Yeah, I've got a Bob Marley poster, two Zeppelin ones, two Hendrix ones, a Grateful Dead one, an Abbey Road poster (Beatles), and a Bob Dylan one, as well as mini ones of Jerry Garcia, Jim Morrison on the cover of the Rolling Stone, and a reproduction of a Jimmy Page concert poster, but I have them up because I think they look cool. Not the musicians, but the posters.
I also have up two Chinese paper art (fox and two lions wrestling), a dream catcher and a Return of the Jedi poster.
I only get posters that I like. I wouldn't get a poster of the Dead just because it's the Dead, I need it to look cool, and it is "aesthetically pleasing". As for intelecually stimulating, I realized the other day that a decoration on my Dead poster is essentially Ahura Mazda without the guy on it, so there! ~;)
Same goes for band shirts. It has to be cool in some way. My favorites are the funky ones, like the one I have with a black and white photo of the Beatles against black background, which they sort of fade into, or my bango picking skeleton one of the Grateful Dead. And of course to rember concerts you've been to (also possible for posters, as well).
The Pink Floyd album covers painted on some women... Pure genius.

well i have every wall of my room covered with posters and i mean every inch. I have various groups and because my room looks like that since i was 13 (now 26) its mostly groups that were my favorite that time (not that now they re not) Sepultura, Iron Maiden, Metallica (alot), Slayer, Pantera, Paradise lost, Deep Purple, Slayer, Judas Priests and many many more. There are not only big posters but also little articles, magazine and guitar brochure parts glued one on top of the other making my walls a huge colaze (sp?).
Why i keep it? First i still like it and think its a pitty to ruin all this work.
Second for sentimental reasons. This room holds many memories, when i get in and close the door no matter what problems out there i can be a teen again and really relax, sit back, draw (im graphic designer dont make fun at me) or listen a new cd. It helps staying in touch with my inner child. You know even if i dont act or think childish or irresponsible i hate the idea of growing up, following a predestined route and end up another borring old comprimised (sp) guy that if laughs he ll break his face.
Soon i ll be moving to my own house this i wont decorate with posters but im thinking to turn it into a huge comic drawing big comic strips in all over the walls. I ll keep my old room the way it is/was. When all my friends will turn to serious responsible adult borring to death individuals, when bosses will screw me or underpay me and wanna kill them, when girfriends-wive bust my balls, i ll pay a visit to my old room where my biggest problem will be ''**** where did i put that drawing?''. Escapism? maybe. But as long it feels right who cares? ~;)
