Is there any movie about Hannibal ? Did not find any .
Such a great story and Hollywood ignored it for decades , why ? Because he was not blonde ? ~;)
Or maybe there a movie about this great Semitic figure ?

Vin Diesel's version is coming out soon.
Thats right, the guy who brought like fifteen hundred tanks into Italy.
"Hannibal, what are we to do, the Romans are too many?
"Bring on the Hydrogen bomb!"
That's right its crammpacked with thin scripting, over done plot, non-existent acting and plenty of new age all American punch lines and Hannibals most famous saying "Yippy Key Yey Motherf***er"
Rated MR materialy retarted.
Still I'm not one to bash a movie before I've seen it.

So you mean a movie about Hannibal Barca made in the last 40 odd years? Vin Diesel's version will be the first Hollywood and in english version of Hannibals story. There are 2 Italian versions, the first made by Mussolini's fascists in 1937 titled Scipione l'africano. And another Italian production from 1960 called Annibale.

It's worse than that it's not with Vin Diesel it's by Vin Diesel. He's going to (if it gets made) direct and star in it.

I don't know; I can't really picture him as Hannibal, but he's got a decent track record. Certainly charismatic, as shown in Pitch Black. And remember people ridiculed his game Chronicles of Riddick when it was announced, and look how that turned out.
Stay openminded. Should be interesting at the very least.
I liked Pitch Black, but I never saw any of the others in the series. In any case, Diesel's too damn short to be an ancient-world general.

Now , he and Hannibal have some thing in common - they both know how to win battles... ~
I don't think they'd go that far ~;)
but I think the Cartagenians would probably have 100's of elephants and the romans might be Imperial legionnairs or something. And it wouldn't suprise me if there's flying an aeroplane trough the sky again.~:) (Troy anyone?)

Let us continue this , Holywoodian style - Hannibal before Canae - "I have got to kill all these Romans , I promised it to my father..." Varro - "Send the Imperial Legions and the Praetorian Caesarian Cohorts and smash these Lebanese Barbarians that came to our land from Germania" The Roman soldiers - "Heil Caesar !!!"

Do you guys mean this (http://www.4q.cc/vin/) Vin Diesel?
~;)
In 2006, Vin Diesel will star and direct the film 'Hannibal', about Hannibal Barca, the Carthaginian General who led an elephant-riding army across the alps to attack Rome in the 3rd century BC. The film is actually footage taken when Vin Diesel led the army himself hundreds of years ago, with the intent of releasing it as a film as soon as Earth technology caught up with his superior, home-made equipment.

I wish Lee Marvin was still alive- give him a hair dye, an eye patch, and a beard, and he would make the perfect Hannibal.
They should get Jackie Mason to do it, actually.

You are the first guy I know to call 'Saving Private Ryan' crap...
Sure it isn't perfect after the beaches (can you say Rambo-style?), but honestly it is better than just good.
Give the man a chance. He has charisma, he has the looks (if he unbuffs a bit) and he can actually act, though we don't see much of it mostly.
I think any real problems will come from the fact that he want to direct it, and that it will possibly include lots of bad combinations of troops and equipment.
But personally I won't comment on the movie until I see some shots from it. After I see them, I will shoot it down with the rear turret of Yamato! But until then I think people should just be happy that someone might do the movie... As long as it is going to be made then there is a chance it will be good. Hopefully it will be.

Well, in Saving Private Ryan, private Caparzo dies after what, maybe 30 or 40 minutes ?, and he barely says one thing during the whole movie. It's not as if he was an important character.
Now, of course, I won't comment aswell, because the movie might be quite good, but I just don't like Vin Diesel.
He doesn't say much, that is right, but he is convincing, and he most certainly isn't the usual brute he has been casted for later. It is an indicator that the man can act and not just go around and fight people.
It is a bit like people who don't like Leonardo Di Caprio, but one should ask oneself, did he ever act badly? Or was it the movie itself? He too has suffered from a sort of typecasting.
Playing Hannibal will be a good test of Vin Diesel's acting or rather the way he wants to develop his career. At the moment, he seems to have created a certain persona and played off this in most of his movies. Perhaps like a Schwarzenegger or a Stallone, you pretty much know what you'll get when he's cast. Like Kraxis, I suspect he has the acting talent to play a more nuanced Hannibal, the question is whether he will choose to do so. If he makes the role just another Vin Diesel hardass, I'll be disappointed but I'll wait for the movies before judging.
Still, we would have been on safer ground with Denzil Washington, other actor I heard discussed for the role of Hannibal. He has similar charisma to Vin Diesel but a more proven dramatic range.

Vin Diesel has shown he can pretty much carry a film before, as in Pitch Black; he really stole the show there. The question is if he can show the same amount of charisma in a more epic film.
As an aside, wasn't it one of the older Hannibal films which had real elephants killed?
Yes, and I'm fairly certain it was the 1937 version.

i have nothing against vin deisle but i really don't want to see another gung-ho semi historic film thats 98% there social lives and affairs plus 2% killing. no i want to see non stop 50 minute sequences of people getting slaughtered. mabey 3 minutes of emotional dialouge THEN MORE KILLING :duel: ~D
You should check Mister Musclehead out in Boiler Room before you condemn him to an eternity of Stallone ripoff vehicles. The guy can act -- it's just a question of whether or not he'll chose to do so.
It's the "directed by" part that has me shaking my head. The last film that was directed and written by an action-film dude was "On Deadly Ground." Enough said.

I can just see Vin Diesel getting seperated from his army and hacking his way through thousands of Romans before finnally they all surrender and he captures the Roman Emperor before marching into Rome with all the people throwing flowers at him and he falls in love with the Emperor's sister before finally dying in the Colosseum fighting the Emperor's evil henchman (who also dies just before Hannibal does). Then one of the elepahnts give birth and an elephant with huge ears files off to join a circus. Why does this seem to ring a bell? :dizzy2:

I think we should really give Vin Diesel a chance. After all, just think about Clint Eastwood- he used to be worse than typecast; he was a one-character guy. But he turned out to be a really good director. After all, he did "Unforgiven" and "Mystic River". He also turned out to be a really good actor. Vin Diesel just needs to start choosing his movies more wisely. Frankly, I think he is already proven as a good actor- the first time I saw Saving Private Ryan out of theatres, I was amazed at how little time he was in the movie. He had a real prescence, and he acted the part very well, not like the macho character he has become.

Yes , I think Hamilcar telling to his son Hannibal etc' is the best opening , but , and this is a very very big but , many of us here in the monastery will say "How Polybius or Livius knew what Hamilcar said to his sons in far away Hispania , around 235 bce"...
I imagine that we won't start out early. The setting is more likely to be 'current' (perhaps a peaceful Hannibal walking about in some Hispanic town or something) while the voiceover will tell the story of the 1st Punic War. Then later on we see Hamilcar telling his sons (it is far more likely that all of his sons at the time were brought to the temple) never to bow to Rome.
There were indeed plans for at least two Hannibal movies, but that was quite a few years ago (about the same time as Alexander was being set up). Since we haven't heard anything more about the Denzel version we can expect it to be lost. Just like the Di Caprio 'Alexander' movie.

Di Caprio is a good actor (I liked him in Catch me if you can and The Aviator) but to let him play Alexander (or indeed, any ancient military general) is just wrong. Can't put my finger on why, but I just wouldn't be able to take him seriously as a military man.

There will no doubt be a voice over of something like Victoria (RTW Victoria) voiceover,
"When Hannibal was born, his father made him swear to fight Rome"
Okay, I just went to Yahoo I saw this

Couple of paragraphs down is "Hannibal swore to fight Rome after they killed his father" Okay, thats not good. At all. Ever.
To early to say anything yet. I wouldn't see it as historical movie at least, more like an action movie which have taken some inspiration from the real world.

Because DiCaprio looks like a girl
Because DiCaprio looks like a girl
I must say that is very subjective.
In all accounts he actually looks remarkably like Alexander. He is rather short, he is blondish and he has a clean face (not in the sense of dirty), the point you call girlish looks.
Besides that he is a skilled actor (whatever you think of the movie he has been in you can't fault his skills), and when he is angry he has a streak of insanity and hurt about him. Perfect for Alexander. Farell doesn't have these characteristics, and the last one was especially a shortcoming. He is in general a rather calmfaced actor, so he had to really overdo himself to play the role of Alexander when he was emotional. That is, sadly, rather visible. Di Caprio wouldn't have had such a problem.
When [Leo DiCaprio] is angry he has a streak of insanity and hurt about him.
Funny, I always thought he looked like an angry pug. You know, all growls and noises, but you just want to rub his head and say "Who's a good boy?"
Perhaps Alexander the Great would benefit from some angry pug action. Who knows?

Cheesy:
Young-lad Hannibal tames the elephant no one else can ride, then strolls it over to his dad's sand-table model of Rome and Italia and crushes it.
Real:
Hannibal's army and elephants struggling to cross the alps. Hannibals eye glazes a touch....
Flashback to scenes of father teaching sons to fight, displaying skill as battle leader, and teaching them to oppose rome.
Cut back to Hannibal driving his forces onward by sheer charismatic willpower.
--- No use of wires at all, no Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon impossibilities.
What I don't know is whether or not Vin can pull off such a role. Sometimes an actor with a big rep for only one type of character can surprise you though: e.g. Bogart in Sierra Madre and Cain Mutiny, Wayne in The Quiet Man, Klein in A Fish Called Wanda. I haven's seen that in Deisel yet, so I'm skeptical, but perhaps its because no script called for it.

I they go with the cheesy one I'll :wall:
They'll probably do the most annoying scene possible: Hannibal as a kid seeing his parents die, then scream "noooooooo" with echo and slow motion effects, then the next scene will be Hannibal as adult, looking completely different than he did when he was a kid... :wall: :wall:
I think the march through the alps would be the best start though. Hopefully they'll include both Trebia, lake Trasimene, Cannae and Zama, and end the movie with an epilogue showing Rome conquering the seleucids where Hannibal had taken refugee. I don't know if they'll mix in the Aeneas and Dido legend, but it could be cool if made in a sensible way, more of something to increase the tension and atmosphere by mentioning quickly somewhere... Of course, the battle scenes, especially Cannae, would be the key thing in a movie about Hannibal. I don't think it's possible to make Cannae climactic unless you've shown both Trebia and lake Trasimene before, and Zama is a given ending scene (perhaps followed up by an epilogue showing Hannibal's death after taking refugee among the seleucids), but 4 battles is perhaps more than their budget can take. I hope not...

As long as the script doesn't force Vin Diesel to act unnaturally he should do fine; Russell Crowe isn't the strongest actor ever, but he's great in his best films (LA Confidential and Gladiator) because he's given short lines, it's what he does best. And Vin does look the part, and in my opinion his voice is excellent: it's deep, but manages to convey different sentiments well.
