I think thats when the game ends, if not substitute it for the year and please tell me the year.

Do you lose? Because I am using HUGE units, my line is not progressing fast enough and I say that I am about 40% by the halfway mark.

In short, if you don't have at least 60% of the map yes, you loose.
That's why so many people like GA mode...

How does the GA mode end? ~

In GA mode you win if you've got more points than everyone else.
You don't have to conquer most of the map to win as long as you complete the tasks for receiving GA points.

What happened in 1453 for them to pick that specific date for the game to end?

Constantinople fell to the Turks, I can't think of anything else that happened that year, that didn't really change the balance of power, but it is a powerful symbolic moment. It's the official end of the Roman Empire.

1453 is also the year the 100-years-war between France and England finally ended at the Battle of Castillon. Those are the two biggest events I know of in the year.

It was around this time (though not really on any specific year) that the Renaissance was beginning. Leonardo da Vinci had been born the year before and Lorenzo de Medici four years earlier; earlier figures like Petrarch had already lived and died. A transition was beginning that traditionally marks the end of the middle ages, and therefore by extension, Medieval: Total War.

Also pretty much kicked off the age of discovery, as the Europeans had to find new places to get their spices and stuff now that the Byzantines were out of the picture. End of an era *sniff*

So they didn't just continue trading, with the Turks? Obviously not.

That's something which hadn't occured to me until now - the whole thing about the age of the explorers being down to the need to find a better route to India and the Orient than the long haul around Africa.

So, all those 'colonials', over the water, have a lot to thank the Turks for, eh? ~D

The food must have been terribly bland, in those days, to motivate them to go to such lengths to put some flavour back into their lives....

Aren't all the ages supposed to mark events?

Early begins the year of William the Conqueror's death.

High begins the year after Constantinople was sacked by the 4th crusade.

I can't think of anything to associate with late, except perhaps the Knights Templar being broken up.

And it ends the year of the fall of constantinople.

RIP great city ~:mecry:, even if Rome had long a history of ruthlessness :bigcry:

I'm becomming quite fond of GA mode, perhaps I will never again play conquest. It lets you spare some allies, assuming they actually respect your good faith, and also makes the game more interesting. I guess of course conquest alllows you to keep some allies too if you go for 60%.

This is an old Thread, but wish to share a thought: I think the Medieval era should be considered finished by 1492, when Columbus reached America - not that I am Mexican and feel something special about it.

Historicaly, I remember nothing really important added historical facts troughout those following years from 1453-1492, so I consider the same era to follow.

I think there's a way to mod this date - if anyone knows how I think I'll do - but this could be also considered a fact to end the Medieval Era in history.

Wait for comments and opinions

Well, the middle ages were pretty much over by then. The Black Death killed the feudal structure and caused service to be bought by the highest bidder. The printing press was invented around then. Constantinople fell and the Renaisance started.

You still win if you're the biggest nation.
IIRC the comment says something about you're not big enough to win, but as you're the biggest nation you win anyway. Don't quote me on it though, it was years ago I had this last time.

You can use this to change the date of your savegame to the year after the end date, then you can play basically forever. Not sure if the link works, been a while since I downloaded it, but its basically the link from the downloads page of totalwar.org, if mine is borked try going there directly.

You can also change the end date in the startpos files. (Since I haven't messed with it for awhile I don't remember the files, but the easiest way is to search for 1453 in the folder, and change it to 1945 or whatever you want.)
